folk will pay a mighty price for even the dullest of scales.
for many years, sailors set out in hopes of finding the beasts, sirens who lured landfolk
to their deaths but could fetch a fine price at the market. crowns were broken
away, hides stripped of their scales, fins cut away from flesh. as hard as they fought,
with each sailor pulled into the deep blues of the sea, a dozen more came with nets
and swords to claim the life of another seafolk. their numbers dwindled, and soon,
the cities of the deep became bare and overtaken by the sands.
the seafolk and sirens grew exhausted, tail muscles aching with chase, arms weak
from striking the hulls of ships, claws broken by the desperate fight for life.
Mirko was the first to lead them astray. a horrible storm stirred above the sea,
rocking ships and threatening to throw men and their weapons overboard. with
a body raked in scars, fins glowing brightly beneath the waves, Mirko rose to the
surface and belted a terrible song. they dove beneath the ship, leading them
back the ports, leaping into the air so the sailors were entranced by the spray of
mist and discordant music instead of the deafening crash of lightning and thunder.
when they neared the landfarers city, they swam into the darkness, leaving the
sailors with an unharmed ship and unbloodied bodies.
the siren had lead them through the storm and delivered them home.
the sailors took pause, marveling that though they had no loot, not one of the crew
had been taken away, swallowed up by neither monster nor the great blue.
sirens followed in Mirko's stead, watching as sailors slowed their hunts and lowered
their weapons. in return, the seafolk turned away their claws, lured away the
raging currents. though slow, the tides began to calm, and neither sailor nor siren
perished in the name of greed or hunger. a final ship sailed over their city, being met
with a large, powerful creature. Mirko emerged, gaze soft, hands outstretched. the
captain of this ship, baring the scars of seafolk claws over his skin, watched them close.
"Let us end this!" a booming voice rolled over the sea, attracting more sirens to
the surface. crowns broke through the water, gathering behind Mirko, a crowd of
luminous eyes filled with a weariness brought on by years of conflict. together,
the seafolk sang out to the ship, a cacophonous symphony of voices.
"Let us live together, land and sea!"

Anyways, this competition was really heart-warming to judge, and I really appreciate the research and creativity- honestly.
But the winner has to be Matty-Batty! I enjoyed their entry so much, it captured my imagination and I really just wanted to see the concept fleshed out more!!

The Empress depicts a woman sitting on a throne. From the abundant nature that surrounds her, we can assume that this woman represents the Earth Mother archetype, a goddess of fertility. Her world is ruled by venus which means that there is complete love, harmony, fertility and luxury by the grace of this goddess


Tiheia is a god like being who is around 70ft long. She has existed since the beginning of life watching everything grow and thrive

The zone she exists in is undiscovered located under the abyss layer of the sea. You may think it is dark down there but its really not, everything has evolved to glow with bioluminescent propertys. The sea floor looks like a city at night but you have to travel thousands of feet through the dark abyss to get even close. The zone is filled with life its ecosystem is much like a coral reef but all the fish/creatures have evolved to have a mermaid like body based of off Tiheia's design. Tiheia is seen as the true beauty and the mermaids strive to be just like her they would follow her everywhere she went eventually they became a bit of a tribe. For generations Tiheia helped raise the tribe of mermaids teaching them everything she knows she treated them as her own children and after many years the tribe had established a small settlement.And that' s where we are today the small village that Tiheia showers with love and affection as she strives to teach them to be creative nurturing and compassionate among other things.

Her biggest role is to keep the balance of nature but she is also in charge of making sure the tribe runs smoothly giving out roles and jobs based on everyone talents and weaknesses solving arguments ect but, her favorite things are helping the women care for new borns and children like a grandmother would, telling the children stories and teaching the children to garden



i didnt know where to stick this in but generally the mermaids are human size so they fit in the palm of her hand! this may change depending on the species of mermaid of course sharks and whales would be bigger than like a goldfish but generally they fit in her hand

i tried my best to make it make sense its hard to write my thoughts out so they don't just look like word vomit


i chose this card because the design gave me like goddess vibe and the card just jumped out at me when i was looking through a deck for ideas then i just started getting all of these ideas like what if she was massive and shes the matriarch of a tribe but the tribe members are all small and fit in her hand then i got this adorable idea for a drawing of them touching foreheads i basically got more and more ideas and got really excited
