This dress could be considered Katherine's favorite, despite the fact that she never wears it, and could no longer fit into it as an adult.
…
Katherine was adopted into a noble family at a very young age, a family of tailors and dressmakers who worked for other nobles and the king's family themselves. The couple that adopted Katherine were unable to produce their own kits, and so they chose to bring Katherine into their household as their own. She'd known for a long time that she wasn't biologically related to her parents, but she never actually said anything, and she appreciated her family deeply.
However, her mother always insisted on dressing her up. In Katherine's childhood, she was just about the same size as the kingdom's princess, and so her mother would always try to get her daughter to model with the outfits she would create for the princess. Katherine despised dresses. She thought they were annoying, and way too girly. She felt patronized by others whenever she was dolled up, but she dealt with it for her mothers sake.
One day, Katherine was called from her room past her bedtime by her mother for reasons she didn't know. She was confused, normally her parents were really strict about when she would go to sleep and get up, and they'd never call her from her room after hours.
Katherine's mother brought her into what just about everyone described simply as “the dress room”. Katherine was annoyed, wondering why her mother would drag her out of bed at that time just to try on a dress. She groaned as she listened to her mother blabber about her latest work, not entirely listening to everything that was being said.
“Well, here we are.” the mother said, bringing her newest creation over to Katherine. It looked especially dull to Katherine, perhaps it was just her annoyed attitude. But, it did honestly seem that her mother was not doing as well in her work. She seemed more stressed as of late – Katherine figured that might have something to do with it. “Put this on.”
Katherine fumbled into the dress and looked in the mirror. She realized then that it wasn't quite as dull a design as she'd thought before, rather, there were subtleties to it that made it unique. Her mother looked as though her eyes were watering slightly. Katherine turned to her to ask what was the matter, but her mother shook her head. “Katherine, my beautiful flower. This dress is for you.” Katherine had already begun taking it off, but those words confused her. Rarely did her mother have any time to make dresses for her.
“Now, go back to bed. I'll see you in the morning.”
…
Katherine awoke surrounded by the king's guard. She blinked for a moment before snapping up and looking around. “Where is your mother?” They asked her in a demanding tone.
“Huh?” Katherine replied. “I don't know. Her room?”
The guardsmen left the room.
Katherine jumped out of bed, and rushed towards the door – but someone was blocking it from the outside. “Stay inside!” A voice yelled from behind the thick door. Katherine started to shake from nervousness. She looked around her room and noticed that her mother had left the dress on her nightstand as she slept.... Katherine picked it up and headed for the window, where she jumped out. It was only the first story, so there wasn't much of a fall – Katherine quickly collected herself and sneaked away from her home before sprinting towards town.
