Story:
Ears twitched but eyes remained still.
Sounds of the perpetually infinite grasp a nearby waterfall tightly held swung like a punch into Edric’s ears.
The beating was repetitive and continuous. It even created a monotonous pattern, making the otherwise bothersome annoyance entirely expected to be the same-- therefore, very calming for Edric.
The trees swung as well, but in a completely graceful motion. Leaves rustled along with the anticipated movements of the branches.
The entire forest was a rhythmic choir of easy sounds. Each played on repeat.
Even his breathing remained as the same steady pattern as the environment around the relaxing soul. Nothing changed, until a rustle disturbed the smooth resonance of the ambiance.
Immediately, it all stopped: The pounding of the waterfall didn’t roar, the swaying of the trees didn’t shift, nor did the leaves dare to budge.
Edric had to open his eyes. The peculiar and sudden eruption in the surrounding nature’s music had to be investigated.
His head lifted but never turned.
Luscious green vibrated amongst the plantations. Splotches of various bright colors emitted in such random spots that their locations even appeared premeditated.
Scattered shapes of assorted sizes covered the forest floor. From leaves to mushrooms; rocks and fungi, plants and moss.
However, there was not a single creature with a beating heart to be seen, and thus, nothing to create the previous distraction. Then maybe wind, instead of an animal, could have been the the creator. Or even Edric’s imagination.
Quick thinking crossed that out.
The soft brushing of the wind didn’t blow through, and Edric’s sense refused to play with his mind. They find him somewhat boring.
The source, perhaps, was forever to remain a mystery.
The sound came again. A chirp even accompanied it.
Smell took over. A familiar sense rose in. It was, for certain, an animal.
The creature was spotted as it scurried from out of the shrubbery.
Edric rose to greet the small animal, though his intentions weren’t as polite as his demeanor when approaching.
The little critter was a squirrel-- bushy tail and all. Not to mention very appealing to Edric's stomach.
Lips were curled back as the tiny squirrel paid no mind to its surroundings. It seemed that the end of Edric's peace would lead to an end of the animal. Things, on the other hand, aren't always as them seem.
Edric's rough tongue rubbed the squirrel's head and the forest's music returned to its tiring but tranquil rhythm. This time, another breath joined the tune.

The names Edric and Severiano have certain meanings (which can be found on Behind the Name), but I chose the names because of the similarities to the ones of a close relative I love and who also has a similar personality to this character's.
