As he turned to look towards the hero, the world seemed to stop.
What? Not possible. This couldn't be. Was it? That's not right, he...
The scowl on the enemy's face seemed to read "death" now. That was already his intention, but it was worse now. The hero took a half step back, shock in his eyes. It was like everything around them just disappeared and they were standing in a black abyss. Time stopped moving, and they just stood there watching each other for what felt like hours.
The hero moved his mouth a little, waiting for the words to fall out, but they didn't. The enemy took a step forward. At that point, our hero was too scared, of what had happened and what would happen, and he let out his thoughts.
"Bucky?"
Another hour it felt like, waiting for his response. Nothing stirred, the wind stayed still. Not a car, a breath, or anything could be heard the entire time. The hero just stood there, watching, waiting.
"Who the hell is Bucky?"
The enemy finally let out. Time snapped back to it's original state, and he moved himself towards the captain, not affected at all by Steve's questioning.
What? No. That's him. He could recognize that face anywhere. In a crowd of a hundred people, he could find that face almost instantly without question.
Then everything happened all at once, Sam dropped down from up above, kicking Bucky in the head and knocking him to the ground. Sam ran over to the captain, ready to help defend. Bucky got up immediately, a pulled a gun from his thigh holster, shooting at Steve. He pulled the shield up in time, the bullet bouncing off, leaving only a scratch in the paint. Bucky ducked away as an explosion hit the car next to him.
The captain looked back. Natasha. Natasha set off the explosion, saving him from his once-thought-to-be-dead best friend. But why would Bucky attack him? Didn't he recognize him. More importantly, didn't he recognize himself? Steve turned back to where Bucky was standing. Gone.
Steve stumbled backwards, almost loosing his balance but quickly regaining it. This had to be a joke or a mind game. That wasn't Bukcy, that couldn't have been. Bucky never would've attacked him. Captain felt tears welling in his eyes, but wiped them away, and turned his attention back to Natasha. She'd seen everything and wasn't going to question it. Steve took a deep breath, Bucky's face still rolling in his mind, and the previous scene replayed over and over. All this time, these seventy years, Bucky was still alive. And this was how they met again?
