The small creature looked up, cringing away from the approaching human. The light around his left eye cast a shadow on his face, highlighting his frail features and matted fur. The human glanced down at the Itty Bitty, the small smile on his face faltering at the state of the tiny creature.
“Hey buddy, you okay?” The human knelt down, tattered ends of his purple coat fluttering around his ankles at the movement. The dark furred animal hissed, skittering backwards at the sudden closeness of the large man.
“Woah there friend, I ain’t gonna hurt you.” The man spoke again, and the Itty Bitty let his eyes sweep over the strange human in-front of him. Markings in blue and black covered the human’s arms, and although he was large, he did not seem like he wanted to hurt the furred animal. The Itty Bitty gave a growl like bark, just to see the reaction of the man.
“Pal, there’s no need to be scared. I promise I don’t wanna hurt ya.” The small canine crept forwards, jumping back as the human moved his hand. He didn’t reach out to the animal, instead shoving his hand inside his pocket. He pulled out a small piece of food, holding it out on the flat of his palm. When the animal didn’t come any closer, he simply put it on the ground and leaned back. The Itty Bitty snatched it up.
“See, no need to be scared.” The man slowly pulled out another piece of food, leaving it in his hand. The dark furred animal hopped hesitantly forwards, before quickly crawling onto his palm and grabbing the food. The animal considered hopping off, but finding the warmth of the man’s hand comforting in a way he wasn’t sure he had experienced before, the Itty Bitty curled up. Before he knew it, he was drifting to sleep, dreaming of gentle things for the first time in a long while. The man smiled, his own eyes beginning to close as the evening faded to night.
