A few weeks had etched by and Crazy Eagle had returned half-starved from her treacherous mountain-camp. ''I'm back.'' She snarled through gritted teeth, pelt hanging ragged over her frame. ''Your little attempt at ridding me has failed, Oak.'' Eagle murmured, recalling the lack of prey and water; there'd been nothing but beetles for her to eat. ''I'm now part of you two.''
''Oh joy!'' Fierce Oak retorted, sarcasm as clear as a summer stream. ''A loon among us! Our pack will surely thrive.'' The mottle-furred wolf shook his head in contempt. ''Get out of my sight; do something useful before you eat, 'o' crazy one.''
Quiet Rain had been contemplating their bickering quietly, observing them from her den wordlessly and wordlessly still padded after her old friend when Eagle took leave. ''You need to bide your time, dear Eagle.'' warned Rain, stepping her way through the tree's reaching roots; to trip over would be a mighty inconvenience right now. ''Angering Oak isn't going to do you any good, even if the stars protect you.''
Grumbling mutinously under her breath, Crazy Eagle faced Rain with a look of pensive thought. ''How do you cope with that brute? Why didn't you just rip out his throat while he slept? You can't surely love him!'' The dark brown healer exclaimed loudly, sending a murder of crows fleeing to the clouds. ''Nobody could love someone who talks with his teeth, not with his brain.''
''Oh, no!'' Rain chuckled softly, pale eyes softening. ''I couldn't love him; but good things come to the those who wait, dear Eagle.''
