He gets chased by a black fog that stings when he gets close to it.

It all starts in a dark red room. Or at least, I think it's a room. I can't see the walls, it just seems to go on forever. Just when I realize that it isn't a room, the fog comes out. The fog is black and it moves very quickly. I try to run, but it seems like no matter how fast I run, or how far I go, I can't escape it! Once the fog reaches me, it starts to surround me, like its a living being. It burns me when I touch it though, and it feels so real. Just as I feel like collapsing from the pain, and the last shred of light disappears, I wake up.

Athen dreams in surrealism. This is not a rare occurrence, or even one that only comes in the form of nightmares. His dreams are full of puzzles, mazes, and optical illusions. And for the most part, it's entertaining; he enjoys his dreams. Except for when the nightmares come. Athen doesn't dream up the average nightmares, the ones full of monsters hiding in the dark. Instead he dreams of tragedies and real-life scenarios, all in the form of disorienting and frightening surrealism. Faces twisted with anger and distraught, the emotions amplified for effect in ways that are not physically possible. The whole world stretching, then shrinking, then collapsing beneath his feet as everything he knows crumbles before his eyes, and everything he loves is lost.

If you asked him to tell you what exactly he saw, he would be at a loss for words. The truth is, he doesn't really know what happens in these nightmares, no matter how many times they are played through his mind. All he knows is the feeling of fear biting at his stomach, the twisted faces of those he loves, and the entire world crumbling beneath him.
