Aria rolled her shoulders, yawning as the large cargo ship finally opened, allowing her to drive the trailer down the ramp to the loading area of the dock. It had been an agonising drive, leaving her and her husband Dominic exhausted. Their 6-horse long trailer held six horses: Diamond, Charlie, Forest, Beetle, Hero and Framed. The first three being ridden by Aria, the last three ridden by Dom. Aria rubbed her eyes as she took in the landscape as they pulled into the quarantine. She flipped open her notebook, scanning over it:

12th - Cross country schooling show. Aria on Charlie, Forest and Diamond, Dom on Beetle, Hero and Framed
15th - Stornoway One Day Event. Aria on Charlie, Forest and Diamond, Dom on Beetle, Hero and Framed
16th - Dressage schooling show. Aria on Charlie, Forest and Diamond, Dom on Beetle, Hero and Framed
18th - Jumping schooling show. Aria on Charlie, Forest and Diamond, Dom on Beetle, Hero and Framed
20th - Emerald Acres Cross Country. Aria on Diamond, Dom on Hero
30th - *** Event! Aria on Diamond, Dom on Beetle

She scribbled over her notes a bit more, carefully plotting each horse's daily exercise and going over the food they had ordered to arrive at their rented property. Their six best horses were there to get noticed and to get a head start on their careers. For the most experienced, Aria and Dom had them qualified for one of their first three star events. It was going to be a busy month in Ireland.

2 weeks later
Aria ran with her head facing the ground, grasping three lead ropes as she ran for cover back under the tall barn. She ran quickly behind Dom and his three horses, sighing with relief as she got under the roof, the rain pelting down outside. The horses had gotten back from quarantine and the stables had been prepared by their working student, Laura. Aria unclipped Diamond's rope as he walked into his stable. She put Charlie in the stable opposite, making sure the two gates were latched. Forest jigged about, pulling at the rope as Aria tugged on it, getting him to focus as she led him into the stable. Dom drove the trailer up to the large barn doors and they worked as it poured down until the trailer and car was unloaded, putting all their belongings into the loft.

It was going to be a big month.

The Cross Country Day
Aria brushed Diamond's coat obsessively, carefully placing the embroidered saddle cloth on her back and sliding it back, lying the hair flat. She lifted the saddle over, smoothing everything down and attaching the girth, clipping and threading all the bits and bobs of the five point breastplate to the tightened saddle. She put on his bridle, pulling the forelock out from under the browband, running her fingers through it. Aria felt Diamond's legs carefully before encasing them in cross country boots. She wrapped up his long tail so it would stay out of the way. Laura led Diamond out, holding his stirrup as Aria swung on board. Diamond felt the excitement of the event, jerking at the reins. Aria shortened her stirrups, collecting up her reins and pushing Diamond on to the start gate. She heard her number being called. It was time!

Entry:
I walked down the barn aisle. It was just before dawn, and nobody was awake. I peeked at some of the nameplates, famous horses of many different countries. How did I become so fortunate to come here with my Sunny? I heard her winnie a few stalls down, her lip lifted up playfully. I laughed and grabbed her yellow halter from the door. She haltered easily and I lead her to a round pen outside. I let her in and I returned to the barn to grab a lunge line, when I walked back I saw a barn hand, he was feeding the horses. I had actually gotten up before other people! But I nearly missed the tack room exit, I dashed in and grabbed a lunge line to warm up Sunny.
"Hey sweetie!" Jaxton walked to the round pen awhile later. Sunny and I stopped working as he sat on the fence. I unclipped the lunge line and attached her lead rope, "What's up?"
"Just warming up Sunny."
"Are you nervous for the competition?"
"Well, yeah. I'm competing against some of the best horses in the world!"
"You know what do you need to do? Make a list."
"Well, first I need to eat, we need to load tack and stuff in the truck, then I need to bathe and groom Sunny, and finally we need to leave." I sighed as Jaxton called a stable hand nearby who was feeding the horses. "Can you please put Dancing With Sunshine's breakfast in..." He pointed to a big pasture right next to us "that pasture?" The man nodded and tossed two flakes over the fence. He grabbed Sunny from me and handed me a wrapped up breakfast sandwich. "Thank you." I said just before I bit into the crunchy toast. We silently walked over, and he released the now quiet mare into the pasture. She started to eat. "Emi, do you think we were meant to do this?"
"Well, I think everything is meant to happen for a reason."

I ran after Sunny, this was not a good time for her to untie herself from the fence! I screamed, "Sunny! Get back here!" Jaxton ran with me, and we cornered Sunny at her stall in the barn. I grabbed her lead rope (which was now completely covered in mud) and started to walk back over to the trailer. Sunny pulled back, and I noticed I had left my registration papers on her tack box! If I had left those, I would be in huge trouble! I gulped as I realized all the things that could go wrong! We could forget important info, I could stray from the designated course, Sunny could fall and get seriously injured! I told myself you're just overthinking everything. Take a deep breath and calm down! I followed my own advice, and took a deep breath as I grabbed the papers. I then lead Sunny over to the trailer, where she loaded quickly. I hopped in the passenger seat of the truck, and we were off to the course.

The scenery was amazing. The fog rolled in as we took Sunny to the cross ties. I tried to assuage myself by grooming her, but it wasn't working. Jaxton walked over and hugged me, "You need to tack up Sunny, I need to go since only riders are allowed back here. Good luck!" He kissed me on the cheek and went to the viewing area. I grabbed Sunny's yellow saddle pad and rested it on her back before I reached for her shiny black saddle and girth. I had finally finished putting her saddle on as the first riders started the course. Her eventing boots were also bright yellow, and I looked around at everyone else's gear as I put them on. Their gear was all black and brown... I looked at Sunnys tack. Her gear was the only colorful tack I could see. I tacked her up faster and moved her to an open area, I did one final check and tightened her girth before mounting and warming her up. She felt good today, and I think we could both sense the anticipation in the air. I heard our names called awhile later. We trotted over to the starting line and waited for the buzzer to go off.

Mile 1

We took off at a breakneck pace, galloping across the stiff sand of Ireland. I saw two jumps right ahead of us, and I counted our paces. One, two, three I thought just before we jumped across a themed obstacle, and I immediately looked at the following one. Sunny's mane and tail whipped in the foggy wind that surrounded us, but we weren't cold. The exhilaration of competition filled me once again as we jumped over another themed jump. I could hear cheering as we ever so slightly turned around a bend. Before I knew it, we had jumped three more jumps. I suddenly took a deep breath, Sunny had always had trouble with Banks, and I could feel my feet go cold as we approached the looming obstacle ahead of us. I cued Sunny to jump, and she carried herself up the first step. Sand sprayed behind us as she leapt up the next one. Sunny slid a bit as she landed, but she managed to catch herself and make it up the last step. We were on our way once again.

I praised Sunny and peered ahead. I knew we had three jumps before a small river crossing, and apparently tackling the Irish flag was our first task. I let Sunny have a bit more rein, and she sailed over the jump. I praised her and slowed her own for a drop fence, but she hopped over the ledge with ease. I quickly asked her to speed up as we approached a jump that looked like a very small castle. Sunny perked her ears up and we soared over. I heard a small clink. Sunny had hit one of her back hooves on a point of the jump, but she landed fine and she didn't seem to be hurt. I flinched I hope nobody noticed! Sunny quickly regained my attention when she slowed herself down for the river crossing, I clicked my tongue when she hesitated the feeling of the cold water. Yet, she bravely plunged herself into the slow river. I continued clicking as she emerged from the river and left at a canter. I didn't want to speed her up to much, as we still had a mile to go. I didn't see the mile marker yet, but I did spot a low coffin jump. Sunny jumped over and kicked up lots of loose sand before we finished the mile. I moved her into a gallop and we saw the mile marker. Halfway there, and I didn't fall horribly!

Mile 2

I let myself have a moment of celebration before we attacked the second part of the course. I overheard some of the other jumpers say that they were worried about a jump called "The Corner". They said it was the first jump on the second mile. Even though I had researched many of the jumps, This one was unknown to me. I grasped Sunnys reins a little tighter, and let her take control over the next jump. I looked at it with curiosity, it looked very solid. At this point, I wasn't worried about winning. I wasn't even worried hurting myself. I was worried about Sunny. I had raised her since she was two, and we were partners in crime. If a simple jump got her seriously injured, I could never forgive myself for entering us in the competition. I now looked at the jump with a certain determination, and Sunny took a leap into the air. She started off the jump very well, and she carried herself smoothly across. We hit the sand with a thud, and continued. Sunny wasn't shaken up what so ever, and she held her head like the proudest mare in the world. We had a bit until the next jump, so I closed my eyes for a moment and took in the chilly Irish air. Maybe, just maybe, we could do this!

I opened my eyes again as Sunny and I galloped to the next jumps, just like before, we had no problems. Sunny needed to catch her breath, so I slowed her down. Luckily, the tide pools were next. We cantered to the edge of the pool, where Sunny took off from the bank. She splashed as we moved through the shallow water, it helped her cool off but it was making me freezing cold! The two of us exploded from the water with renewed energy to complete the last leg of the course. Time seemed to slow down as we spotted the finish line. An arrow jump was an easy feat to conquer, and the brush jump only pricked us a bit. So when the castle jump came, I counted one last time so we could finish with a bang. Sunny executed the last jumps ever so perfectly, and we crossed the finish line with cheering.

I jumped off of Sunny, and Jaxton came running to the two of us. He kissed me and said, "You did great!" I hugged Sunny around the neck, and exclaimed, "We did great!" She nickered as I pet her sweaty neck. I knew that even if we didn't win the competition, we tried our hardest to beat ourselves. I know we did win the competition against ourselves, and that's what really matters.

Lady trotted out of the trailer, her long mane flowing in the Irish wind. Lady whinnied allowed to Erial her owner to come. Erial got out of the drivers seat of the truck that drove the trailer. She saw lady at the door of the trailer and she sighed. "Lady, you can't be stubborn. It is not nice." Erial raised her finger pointing at lady as she said so. Lady walked forward and stood before Erial, the halter in range for Erial to clip on the leash like rope. She clipped it on and led Lady to the barn where she would keep Lady before and after the race. The sky started to darken, she tied the halter rope to a brushing station at the front of the barn. She picked up a medium sized brush and started by her rump and worked her way up to her mane. She picked up a different brush, and started to brush out her hair. Erial untied the knot and let Lady walk herself into her stall. She usually let Lady pick out her own stall for she "Always knew best". She un buckled the buckles on Lady's halter and hung it outside the stall on a hook. Erial pet Lady on the nose before heading back to the farmhouse near the stable. Lady laid down in the grass a warm spring gust reaching her face and pelt before lulling her to sleep.

Erial woke up to the birds lightly chirping outside her window, surprisingly the sky was darker than yesterday's sun and blue skies. Erial quickly got dressed in her Competition wear and went downstairs through the house and out to the barn. She tried to be quiet while crossing the gravel pathway, for she knew the owners and other residents in the house were most likely still asleep. She tried pushing open the big wooden doors quietly, but, quickly the squeaked and squealed to life. They then lightly bumped the grey cobblestone walls and made a loud bombing into the barn. Lady awoke with surprise to the commotion and looked toward Erial with a tired and mad stare. Erial walked on her tiptoes over to her stall and unlatched the door. She slipped on Lad's halter and rope and lead her over to be tacked up. She laid on the English saddle and blanket and climbed on top of her. Putting her heels in the stirrups, she rode Lady out into the fresh Irish air.

The ride was memorable, Lady was a bit slow, but that was normal for her when she was on a new terrain and a new place. Erial knew she had enjoyed it, they had seen some deer and at least five or six rabbits here and there. She missed her home in Sunriver, Oregon but, this made it feel like home. She cantered Lady back to the Farmhouse, letting her graze here and there. Erial heard the sizzle of a pan in the house and knew the Mistress of the house must be cooking. She quickly took off Lady's blanket and saddle, and lead Lady back into her stall. "Take a rest Lady, you have a big day, I will come get you later." she whispered before she walked toward the house. Lady was so new to her, she had only owned her for a few months and already she was taking a race with her in Ireland. The years were going by so fast, too fast for her.

With authentic "American" pancakes and bacon in her Erial got ready for the competition. She put on mascara and eyeliner and put on her best competition clothes. She tied back her bouncy hair into a bun and smiled in the mirror. "I can win this!" she said to herself, she almost leaped down the stairs. She watched through the window as the other competitors started to trot or gallop by on the path she had taken earlier with Lady. She looked at the clock on the wall and noticed that the race would start in thirty minutes. She dashed out the door, running full sprint to the stalls. She again put the halter on, braiding Lady's hair into diamond shapes and then did a fishtail braid in her tail. She hypothesized she must have less than twenty minutes, and ten if she wanted to take a longer time to trot to the starting line. She laid Lady's special tack on her arm and carefully buckled the belly buckle so that it was not too tight for Lady. Lady seemed weirdly calm, she was usually kicking or bucking when she got everything on. "So I see you have discovered the calm before the storm?" she asked laughing at what she said. She stepped up on Lady and rode her to the pathway before galloping off.

Erial slowed down lady one they go to the starting point. She would start in ten minutes, she watched at the starting line as another horse went across it. She then looked over at all of the other horses, some looking tired and beat from earlier runs, and other proudly waiting for their turn. She guided Lady to the starting line, a plump man came up beside her horse, his grayish red receding hairline easy to see. "Miss, you name, horse name, and number?" he asked tapping his pen to his clipboard. Erial looked down and smiled.

"Erial Henn, My Fair Lady, #16" Erial responded, she nodded as the gentleman checked something off and pointed his pen to the starting line. She walked Lady forward and made her stop at the starting line. She felt a tension in her shoulders and knees. She took a deep breath and looked around at the scenery, people gathered behind canvas tarp walls to watch, the sky was still gloomy and cloudy, but, when she looked infront of her she could see the beautiful cliffs and rolling waves, her guess would be she would be going under the cliffs, but she could not say for sure. She heard a one bell chime, and she got ready, two bells rang out louder, than she was off at the three bell chime, all of the spectator clapping and screaming good luck as they did to the others.

She rode hard into the first few seconds, Lady's long hair seemed to flow like rivers behind her. She leaned down for speed keeping her legs still. She could see the first jump ahead, already a double jump. She patted Lady on her neck and whispered, "Come on girl, you can do it!" She got ready for the jump, the space between her and the jump becoming closer. Lady jumped gracefully over the first jump, she almost missed it her hooves coming in close behind the wall. She breathed out thanking Lady for clearing it. The second jump came into view and she knew she could do it, she looked at it and smiled brightly, they cleared the new one more easily than the first. She could see that Lady was working as hard as she could. The next two were the same, an easy clear. Lady started to breath heavily, she had been running hard for it seemed like three or four minutes. That is when Erial saw the bank jump, that was one Lady had a hard time with, she usually would clear the first but would have to walk up the others. Lady ran harder pushing herself to go up, she made it up the first two. The third she had to slow down on, she made it slower up and had to try and regain speed after it.

((Still working XD))

HUGE NOTE: MAKE SURE YOU READ UP ON CROSS COUNTRY EVENTS BEFORE WRITING/DRAWING YOUR STUFF. Cross Country is not a traditional race. A horse competes solo on a course, and their time is taken down and compared to the others. Refusing a jump results in penalties, however, form is not as important in a cross-country event.

In some cases, multiple horses will run a track, but we are not doing that here, for the safety of the horses and the riders.
