"We are all legends."
Everyone has a story. Something unique, something special about them. Many stories remain secrets that are carried to the grave. Secrets are not meant to be told. But this? This is my secret. My story.
We are all legends.
✧ ✦ ✧
It was back when I was just a kid - y'know, that awkward little mutato who never fit in anywhere and acted tough to cover up just how shy or scared I really was. I was waiting for my dad at the small cabin we had up in the hills where we stayed during our hunting trips. Dad had gone out that morning to check on our traps while I stayed and cooked us up a mess of chow. I'll admit I'm not the best cook, 'cause pretty soon, I was opening all the windows and the door to let out the smoke.
Yep, it was really a mess. I remember hoping dad wouldn't mind too much that I'd stunk up the cabin. Phew, that burnt egg and bacon smell would probably stay for at least a couple of days.
A few hours later, dad still wasn't back, so I dumped the burnt breakfast into a bucket in the corner, and then went around the cabin closing the windows. I left the door open.
Now there's one thing you should all know when you're out camping or out in the woods and you have food. Never leave food lying around and never leave cabin doors open. All sorts of critters are likely to get in, hoping for a snack. That's what happened with me.
Next thing I knew, the cabin was a disaster. A real shambles. Looked like a tornado had ripped right through the inside. Boy, it sure was a mess. The curtains were ripped up, there were papers and all kinds of other stuff lying all ove the floor, the bucket and its contents were strewn all about too.
Hm, funny thing though. Everything looked...older somehow. I wandered aimlessly about the cabin, taking in everything. It was older. Dust covered most everything, and a few cobwebs were-
Wait. What was that? I bent down and put a paw on a dark spot on the wood floor. It looked almost like...dried blood. Okay, that was creepy. I stood again and looked around some more. I was just heading out the front door which still stood open, when I heard dad coming up the trail to the cabin.
Thank goodness, maybe he could make some sense of everything! "Hey, dad!" I called, waving from the porch. Gosh, he looked older too.
He didn't acknowledge me, and instead walked past me and into the house. I looked at him funny, and followed him inside. "Dad? What is it? Did I do something wrong?"
He just stood there and ran his eyes over every detail. when he saw the dark stain on the floor, he...hey, those were tears. My dad was crying?
"Dad? Everything okay?" I put a paw on his shoulder, and he sucked in a quick breath and jerked away.
I hopped back, confused. He just...he just looked right through me. Like I wasn't even there. He shook his head and let out a sad sigh. "Winchester, boy...," he said as his eyes traveled over the cabin's interior once more.
"Yeah, dad?"
"You shouldn't 've left that door open..."
"Aw yeah, I'm real sorry 'bout that."
"I should've stayed."
"I'm a big mutato, dad! Don't worry I can take care of myself."
"I shouldn't have left you alone..."
"Really, dad, it's not that big a deal. I'll have it cleaned up in no time."
"...If I hadn't left, you'd still be alive today."
"Uh, dad? I am. I'm right here!" I stood in front of him and waved my paw in front of his face. Geeze, I knew dad's eyes were getting bad but this was ridiculous. "Hellooo?" Still no reaction.
What was happening? I couldn't be dead! I was just cleaning up! Confused, so confused. I flopped back onto one of the kitchen chairs and rubbed my head. I sat there in silence and watched as my dad laid a wreath and a piece of paper on a small table.
Curiosity getting the better of me, I got back up and leaned over to read what the sheet of paper said.
Winchester Legend, age 13, son of mutato Nicodemus Legend
died last yesterday afternoon after an attack by a bear.
He will be dearly missed by his friends and family.
Services were held on the 6th of September 2003.
The plaque on the wreath said, "September 6th, 2013
You Are A Legend
RIP Winchester Legend"
Dad left and I didn't follow. I didn't even try to stop him. I was a legend.▄▄▄▄ ▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄▄ ▄▄▄▄
