Calloway could hear the stars. He could hear them twinkling like little faint chimes in the vast atmosphere, with his neon ears twitching in different directions to hear their soft whispers. Sometimes they would tell him stories of what happened during the day; the eyes he attracted while stumbling across streets. They stopped telling him about the things others would say, however, for that was crystal clear to the kalon. The
blind kalon.
Everything was blank: maybe white, maybe black. Color was non-existent in Calloway's world. It was like that since the beginning, and he didn't really mind. Part of this was due to never really thinking about his lack of sight that often. There was nothing he could really do about it, and the purple kalon was perfectly fine with that. Anyway, he preferred being lulled to sleep with soft songs and ballads of the motherly stars than to see the world around him. The stars often told him about how everything looked, with vivid descriptions of color and texture and other words Calloway would never understand. But he still listened.
Of course he knew when to wake up and when to sleep; the stars would tell him that too, although indirectly sometimes. In the day, they were silent. Only the sounds of screeching birds and rustling leaves were present, as well as the noises of urgent speech. Barely speaking, Calloway was used to talking in incoherent mumbles that only his siblings and parents could understand. The stars didn't hear him, but he never talked to them in the first place. It was more of a one-sided relationship.
That's how most of his relationships were like, anyway. Oh, he was never interested in any romantic relationships, but the "mandatory" ones like friendships and family. Sometimes he missed his friends. But did he really deserve to call them that? He was distant, far too distant; he shut everyone out and now it was too late. Calloway would never see them again, and even if they didn't want to keep a close relationship, he thought it would be decent to apologize.
Realization, in general, was never too shocking. It was obvious that he would never be able to contact them. First of all, due to his conditions, he wasn't able to attend regular education. Second, he wouldn't be able to verbally say anything -- at least nothing they would understand. Third, texting wasn't an option. Even if he were able to type, how would he know their numbers? Why was he even thinking that now for goodness sake? He never listened to them before, but his senses had deteriorated since then, and now all he could do was listen. It was too late to fix anything anymore.
It was too late to leave the stars.

Please don't shout. It's hurting my ears. It was the first time Calloway spoke to the stars; the first time he told them about what he really wanted. After days of long and meaningful thoughts, as well as nights of listening to the stars' twisted views of the world, he realized that there was so much more to life than empty speech and sightless views the stars proudly spoke of. They were lying to him. They told him all about the beaming sun, with flickering rays meant to burn and blind with its piercing light.
Clouds were only meant to cry tears of cold acid, while the soil was meant to contaminate and suffocate. It sounded too painful to be real, but Calloway was born weaker than others, and who else was he supposed to believe?
He was never able to personally disprove their claims. His ability to do so ended as a child. As Calloway's condition worsened, he stopped walking outside save for the few occasions he needed space for mild exercises. Never experiencing the harsh heat nor the chilly rain, he mindlessly believed the stars' stories. But they were just fables. Nothing more, nothing less; made to entertain, not to teach how to view life. And he finally understood.
As soon as Calloway tried to tell the stars to stop lying to him, their soft and syrupy words abruptly and painfully transitioned into a smoother yet deeper (and much louder) tone.
Who else will tell you the truth? No one cares enough to show a blind kalon the world. Now, the stars were no longer reassuring him with lies. Spitting out words of harsh reality, they screamed at him. But suddenly they were extinguished. And Calloway could no longer hear them. But he was fine with that.
