"The Runes who Decorate the Forest"
The further you step into the forest, the older the trees become. And the older the trees are, the more lichen drips from their limbs and trunk.
This is the work of Lichen Runes.
Parent Lichen Runes lay one egg from their clutch on a young sapling, and from the time the baby Lichen Rune hatches, the tree is theirs. While a Lichen Rune may travel up to a kilometer away from its tree, it will only leave that tree for good in the most unusual of circumstances. Lichen Runes are deeply attached to their trees, and take great pride in keeping them healthy, happy and, above all, beautiful.
The older a Lichen Rune is, the faster its lichen grows. A young Lichen Rune will have little to no lichen on its body. At ten years of age, it begins to grow enough lichen and moss to remove some from its body. It does this regularly, tenderly transferring tendrils and frills from its wings (which are naturally stubby and short; it is not a terribly good flier) to its tree. Lichen Runes are natural artists, and take great pride in their work. No two of their frilly sculptures are alike, and these Runes will prune their trees for hours on end, seeking satisfaction.
It is very rare indeed that a Lichen Rune leaves its tree, and even more rare for it to bond to a human if it has done so. However, on these odd occasions, Lichen Runes have been found to make excellent companions. Under their craggy backs and rustly bellies, they are loyal, steadfast companions, and, in fact, if you visit their tree, and treat it with respect, a Lichen Rune will look upon you very favourably indeed.
However, be warned: If a Lichen Rune takes a liking to you, they may end up trying to prune you and grow their sculptures on you as if you were their tree!
Judging has now begun!

Owner Name:
Kirbylover901

Name:
Moss
The reason for this name was simple: he reminded me of moss. I knew that other contestants would take it if I didn't, and decided to continue the one-word names I had been giving to possible new runes. Although I'd been naming many things after the warrior cat style (Berryfur, Waterpaw, etc.), runes weren't like that- they didn't deserve such severity of not getting the right name. They were great enough as they were- so Moss it was.
When I thought of the masterpiece in a word, I knew it was perfect; it's a cute and fun name for a complex rune. I loved the story behind the species, and immediately the name sprang to me: the artistic talent, the forest, the lichen! The concept of it all is simple, true, but the name just further enhances this rune. It may not be special or complex, but the fitting name fits the perfect rune: Moss!
Gender:
Male.
As much as this rune could be female, Moss is definitely a boy rune.
Bearer Info
♣Bearer's Name
Kaylee. She's called Kay by Moss though.
♣Bearer's Age
14 years, just older than a teen.
♣Bearer's Birthday
August 26th! Moss always crafts her something to celebrate the occasion. Usually it's a charm, but rarely he makes her a painting. It's just 24 days after Moss's birthday- coincidence, no?
♣Bearer's Personality
Kay is a happy-go-lucky, friendly and cool kind of gal. She's not as sophisticated as Moss, who fusses about little things. She's really just concerned about taking care of her family, her rune, and her life. She goes with the flow and is rather defensive, but not like Moss's way of defense and offense. She's the prefect match for Moss- not that they'd marry each other- as a friend, like a person he can count on, trust, and love.
Personality:♣Artistic♣
Moss is the artist of his forest. He goes around, draping lichen from branches in a spider web-like fashion. He strives to go beyond this, however. Every day, he sits in his tree, thinking about how to make the branches appear spiky, to color them yellow, or to make them defy gravity itself! Often, he sketches his ideas on some tree bark that has fallen, and uses a stick to carve his designs into them. And when the perfect idea presents itself in a form not creatable in lichen, Moss simply gathers some materials and makes it out of something else in the forest- like berries to dye his lichen, or fallen sticks to make a hut, with some lichen on top, of course!
♣Wise♣
Moss is a young and intelligent soul. He knows his stuff- why not to touch thorns, how to dye his creations teal, and even some other bits advanced knowledge. A clever rune, like himself, also knows the forest he lives in. His smartness may be one of the secrets to his success; the more organisms he encounters, the more art he can make. Besides organisms, the more techniques he discovers, the more intricate his art becomes. Plus, the more complicated his art is, the more money-and praise- he gets!
♣Inspirational♣
Often, Moss takes himself as a inspiration. He might craft some lichen based on his wings. Or perhaps he'll make a blanket from some new lichen he found. This leads to a never ending wave of new ideas, and more oohs and awes. Kay even created a Facebook page for him, with the quote, "I am a beauteous being," and his picture! But Moss doesn't check Facebook anyway. He would rather craft himself a new hat than tap on computer keys.
♣Peaceful♣
Moss isn't a rune of arguments. He's a go-with-the-flow kind of rune who doesn't fuss about problems in life. He isn't one to growl, either- daily forest arguments rarely include Moss, unless its someone who sees his art as forest graffiti, or just doesn't appreciate his talent. Although he's ready to defend his art at will when his masterpieces are insulted, Moss is a relatively easy-going character who forgives people. He definitely doesn't plan on holding any grudges.
♣Kind♣
Moss isn't a mean rune. He's kind and caring, helping lost creatures, and the occasional creature stuck in his creations. He also tries not to upset the forest, going the extra mile to respect the inhabitants. He does his best not to mess up that garden over there, or spill some blue paint on some grass that somebody planted. Moss does his best not to appear tough, bulky and rough- he's a good egg inside.
♣Patient♣
Moss isn't a rusher or a rushed rune. He waits his turn for things to be done. When he first arranges his lichen in the work of a painting, we doesn't give up just because it looks poor. He keeps on going, since he knows it will get better, more grand. When he takes requests, his customers have to wait a while before something appears at their doorstep. And Moss can control the inpatient remarks with his wisdom and encouraging- although not everyone can wait very long.
♣Slow-Going♣
Moss stays a while and enjoys the scenery whenever he takes a walk. While the tortoise beats the hare in a famous folktale, the artistic rune takes a break to add to nature's beauty with his work, even when we travels slowly. While some may find this boring, Moss believes that good things to those who wait, and why not lag behind to take a closer look at everything? His lifestyle has slowly adjusted to this way of life, so his title has changed; it stands now at "The Slow And Intricate Artist Moss". Fitting, is it not?
♣Inactive♣
Although artists need to be on the move, when something nice presents itself Moss rests on the forest floor lazily, not exercising. He just doesn't have the motivation anymore to walk around with no purpose. Just as an inactive user doesn't do much anymore, Moss doesn't move as much anymore. He's just... inactive by choice.
♣Non-Violent♣
If Moss was being interviewed, he wouldn't mention any bloody fighting. If he is provoked, he will use words, not objects, to settle the matter. Besides the horrid images that could be exposed to him, Moss also hates the injuries that come with it. Injuries could keep him from making art! He still shudders at the thought of having a cast. This also means he won't expose blood in his work, even when asked to. To prevent chaos breaking out because of this, he puts hours of devotion into his art, as poor pieces of art can be fight-starters.
♣Calm♣
Is Moss panicky? No, of course not! He's a calm character, not breaking out in chaos. Even when surrounded by enemies, Moss counters with his powerful weapons- words that defend himself. If he was fully exposed to fighting, he likely would lose his calm demeanor, messing him up. So Moss chooses to defend, not attack, and keep his cool in dire situations.
♣Noble♣
Besides his art, Moss himself is a rune worth watching and admiring. Other artists take him as an idol in his painting abilities. Ungraceful runes are fascinated with his moves. Although many other animals don't admire Moss as much, the truly endeared animals think he's wonderful, casting his noble aura around him.
♣Proud♣
Although he rarely shows it, Moss is a very prideful rune. He enjoys making and seeing his work, knowing he himself made it with care and determination. He doesn't boast about it, but he still thanks his audiences and spectators sincerely when complimented. When insulted, however, he says that his art is perfectly fine, or that the insulter should go somewhere else to insult something. But really, it's not wise to insult somebody anyway.
Moss is basically a nice, smart, proud and creative rune with many secrets up his sleeve. He can be adventurous at rare times, but his traits are really summed up here. If he was a story character, he'd be a supportive one- he isn't much of a hero, but he can easily move the plot along of a tale. He's a rune who comforts the hero, adds to the idea and conflicts, and enriches the storyline. He would be a great friend to almost anybody- even stubborn and mean runes who really need some comforting. Moss is quite the character: a relatively unpredictable kind of rune who's always willing to help or fill the missing link in the suspenseful stories he writes- or is the star in.
Why do you wish to have him:
[size=85]I do love this rune. His design is so intricate, and nature-based runes are totally epic! Plus, he's the perfect story character. There's so much to write about, as Moss is quite the versatile guy. He's even an artist- and so am I! Even his home is divine- no where other than the forest! What a perfect place for a divine rune!
I even have a woodland that I visit occasionally where I live. It's much like Moss's- there's a creek, maple trees, and lots of nooks and crannies to explore. Its a live with animals, birds and squirrels of all sorts. It's like having the essence of adventure right by my side! There's even lichen everywhere, so Moss will feel right at home with it all. I could take him there someday. This one of a kind, better than the most rune has truly captured my heart.Size:Moss is about the size of two squirrels, bigger by a few centimeters. But despite this, he's still considered small and challenged. You would think he wouldn't, but he is- and Kay isn't there to witness the unfortunate, but rare, fights he gets into.Weight:Moss is about 7 pounds or so. Kay has never gotten around to truly weighing him, but she figures if he can walk on tree branches safely he doesn't weigh too much. It's really a rough, but accurate, guesstimate.Age:Moss isn't pretty old for a rune- perhaps about 17 years of age, but he still has the smarts of a 30-year old one. Kay isn't too sure if its exact, but Moss knows he's that age. His tree, of course, may be even 30 years older, but Moss doesn't seem to care. Of course, its never been chopped down, so his faithful maple's age may remain forever mysterious- like Moss himself.Birthday:August 4th- it's in the summer, but August is just a month away from Autumn. He always get psyched about his birthday in August, and even more enthusiastic about Fall coming! As you can see, Moss likes having his birthday in August.Favorite Color:Green- the color of nature, maple tree leaves, the color of life!Favorite Song:When Can I See You Again by Owl CityFavorite Place:His tree! Even though he likes Kay's Place, his tree is still is favorite place.Favorite Animal:Ladybugs don't count, sadly. But Moss's favorite animal is a rabbit.Favorite Drink:Apple juice with frozen berries in it! It's delicious- the more fruit the better!
Favorite Food:Apples with lots of maple syrup and honey!Where will you keep him:Let's just say everywhere! His creations will come alive in art, Moss can venture in my signature, and explore further into the woods in my stories. He'll have his own personal spot in my character thread, and even explore the other areas of the world! Among with it all, he will be pampered with love and care, photos and drawings, and tons of stories! Like lichen, Moss is constantly popping up in many places, close by or far away.Would you like to breed him/her in the future:Moss would love to have a mate. I would adore some lichen babies, creating moss everywhere they go. So adorable- and so pretty!Any Quirks:♣Moss also 'tsks' whenever he disapproves something. This can get annoying, especially if he really doesn't like whatever he's looking at. This is not much of a problem otherwise, however, as Moss is a fairly friendly guy.
♣Being an artist, Moss has the tendency to jump on his surroundings to create his masterpieces. This can prove to be a nuisance, although he becomes depressed if it is destroyed. Kay's caretakers highly disapprove of this, and blame Kay for 'letting hr friend run wild'. The solution? Moving his creations... elsewhere.
♣Moss's tail creates lichen. Whenever he swings it, more of the fungus appears! However, he rarely swings it, so its not as much of a problem... usually. But if he's angry, lichen appears in masses- a real problem! It also is one annoying problem that cannot be easily solved- as the lichen keeps on growing and growing...
♣Moss also likes hair a lot. Sometimes, when Kay is sleeping, Moss will sleep in her hair, making it full of lichen! Kay highly dislikes this, and has to comb the lichen out of her hair, much like lice, but easier. Moss if often punished by staying in a crate for a few days- something the rune despises. Fur appears to Moss as the same thing, so Kay sometimes gets a furry rug and allows Moss to roll, play, or just relax in it. Afterwards, however, she thoroughly cleans it, just to make sure it doesn't become... icky. Why this Rune left its tree:Moss is a curious and artistic rune. Artists constantly need inspiration. But before his forest was covered in creativity, Mos just did what lichen runes did- patrol their trees. One day, he found ladybugs around it. Moss gathered up the beetles and placed them around his tree, making it more festive. Another time, he found bees trying to make a nest. Moss isn't fond of bees- so he covered it in lichen and disposed of it.
When his humble forest home ran out of trees to decorate, or at least in creative ways, he decided to head out and search for a new home, despite his attachment to his tree. After all, his tree was getting full of lichen and starting to look a bit boring. And, being a lichen rune, he couldn't bare to rip the fungus off his beloved home. So, he merely left his home for a while, thinking it would be temporarily. But as he explored the areas he hadn't noticed in the forest, like the running creeks and different trees from the maple he lived in, he became rather attached to the other part of the land instead. Although he longed for his tree back in the inner forest, Moss decided to stay at his realm for the purpose of his paintings.
But soon Moss got bored of his new setting. After a nice long, heartfelt visit to his tree, he set off out of the forest. He arrived at the country side, the place where Kaylee lived. He curiously ventured inside. His widened as he saw new, undiscovered before scenery- which turned out to be the kitchen. Kay just so happened to be there, home alone, and picked the rune up. She took him up to her room, and put him in a box. Moss, however, escaped her clutches and exited the house. But then the storm hit.
Moss was forced back into the house by pure exasperation. He knew he would never survive outside, as there were little suitable trees he could go in. Up the stairs he hopped, until he arrived at Kay's place. He saw her sleeping, and plopped onto the pillow, where her hair was. He fell asleep on the comfy surface, feeling more relaxed than he had been. When dawn broke, Kaylee woke up to see the rune. She almost shrieked, but kept her voice down and lay the rune on the pillow so it could continue sleeping.
When Moss woke up, he took a double-take. Where was the human? Was the storm over? Questions zipped around like dragonflies, keeping the rune awake. He finally decided to hop in a box and sleep some more. It was a very peaceful morning. More peaceful then any other morning.
After Kay arrived back home, she observed the rune, enjoying itself. Her box was getting filled with lichen, true, but the rune seemed to like it. She went through the fungus with her hand. Something was in there! She pulled out a rune symbol. A rune bearer? Herself as a rune bearer? She smiled and pocketed the rune symbol.
After that, Moss decided to live with Kay. Although he visited his tree, he mostly stayed near, or in, her cottage. It was a perfect life for a laid-back rune. But Moss still visits his tree. He's still attached to it, though doesn't go there as often as he goes to Kay's cottage.Likes:All runes have their view on the world. Moss tends to be the optimistic type, having a positive view on the world. This leads to more likes than dislikes, like his Facebook page. Here are just a few things Moss adores.
♣Lichen And Other Fungus
Being the rune he is, Moss simply adores lichen and other fungus. He loves everything to do with it: napping on it, dyeing it white, or even just touching it makes his heart soar. Mushrooms are just divine, and lichen is more than epic. If he had the time, Moss would make a nest filled with lichen, and mushrooms to decorate the top. But he doesn't have the time- so he keeps on adoring fungus in his not-very-long free time.
♣His Faithful Maple Tree
Of course, who wouldn't love their tree? Although his tree isn't on his mind all the time, he tries to take exceptional care of it. Everyday he plans his work on his tree. Over time, his tree has become covered in lichen, and rather old-looking. Because of this, other creatures rarely purposefully land on his faithful maple. But deep inside Moss knows that his tree will never die as long as he is there to care for it.
♣Quiet Days
Moss truly relishes the days of peace and quiet he has. When birds are not chirping their heads off, when squirrels aren't chatting, when insulting creatures don't insult. He gets time to work, time to relax. Quiet days is pretty high up on Moss's like list, as they're like a blissful dream- rare and exciting but not stressful.
♣Paint
Ever since Kay introduced Moss to paint, he has fallen in love with it and used it to color his world. One of his favorite things to do with paint is to create lichen that could be red or orange to finish his masterpieces. He also likes just hopping around with a dirty paintbrush, spraying paint wherever he goes. He believes that paint was made to color his lichen- and world- with!
♣Fruit
More precisely, apples! Moss doesn't have apples very often, so he has to eat oranges or strawberries instead, but he still gobbles them up. If he was given a choice between fruit or some bread, he'd pick fruit, of course! When Kay goes out to the farmer's market, she tries to buy something nice for Moss. Apples are bought if possible, but Moss always smiles and thanks Kay even if its something sour, like pears. In fact, if he had the choice, Moss would have fruit with every meal! But Kay doesn't allow that. She gives him balance- bread and some leaves for lunch, and maybe that yummy fruitcake for dinner- along with some smooth peanut butter or honey.
♣Maple Syrup
Living in a maple tree for so long has made Moss accustomed to the maple syrup that it produces every year. He relishes the luscious flavor it has, drinking it or eating it slowly. One of his favorite things is to drizzle maple syrup over lots and lots of apples; then eat them all! Other runes find this rather unappetizing, but Moss doesn't care about them as much as maple syrup.
♣Autumn
Autumn is Moss's favorite season! He loves the leaves that fall from the trees, a spectrum in nature. He adores the maple syrup and apples that become in season- perfect for harvesting. Warm and cozy new blankets and pillows that follow the cold winter approaching are nice and fluffy. Most runes may not have a favorite season, but Moss does- the harvest season, and the artist paradise time of fall, or autumn as he prefers to call it.
♣Ladybugs
Out of all the bugs that exist, Moss likes ladybugs the most. Their shells are the color of autumn leaves, and they're so cute- to Moss, anyway. He often puts them on his tree for safekeeping, or just to protect him from other invasive creatures. Sometimes he even goes ladybug hunting! Of course, he doesn't really hunt them, just gather them in a basket of lichen and arrange them on his tree.
♣Sculpting
Although Moss doesn't really do much with sculptures, the occasional sculpture he creates is something to be proud of. Usually it's something in nature, like a tree, and extremely rarely an animal. Moss doesn't hate sculpting, but doesn't adore it either, so its a low rank on his faves list- but still, its on the list itself, so its honorable.
Dislikes:♣Lightning
Moss hates lightning. Its loud and dangerous, electrifying anything in its path. When it comes around, he scuttles into his tree or Kay's cottage (whichever is nearest). It's #1 on his hate it list since it ruins everything- his concentration, his art, his tree, and even his life sometimes. If Moss got one wish, he would definitely choose rid the world of lightning. But lightning creates life with destruction, so the world wouldn't be right. But wishes don't come true all the time, so Moss will just keep on dreaming to rid himself of the horrific thing.
♣Noisy Creatures
Specifically, birds! Moss has no love for birds. He can't focus when noisy creatures around, and then no work gets done. He has grown to hate loud things, avoiding them wherever he goes. When a thunderstorm comes around, Moss rushes to Kay's house- lightning is loud and dangerous! Even though it isn't technically a creature, Moss still despises lightning and all other noisy things.
♣Criticizers
Moss also hates animals who criticize his work. He as much as he'd like the world to be perfect, there will always be animals cruel enough to insult him- and his work! So, Moss retaliates with defensive words that mean 'Go away!' or 'My art is perfectly fine!'. Like birds, Moss has no love for negative animals who insult him too much.
♣Long Weeks At Kay's Cottage
One of Moss's big no-nos is staying at Kay's place for too long. He gets homesick, and appears depressed. No paintings, no lichen, no trees- it spells doomsday for poor Moss. Usually Kay lets Moss out when he's staying over, but sometimes (like on Christmas) she forgets. Moss truly hates these days.
Art:
Moss with his art- The Leafy Deer

Moss let his imagination run wild with water, and newly discovered paint from his rune bearer. The result? A picture of a lichen rune with an awesome glow and a silhouette! Although all resources lead to the rune being Moss, he won't admit it.

A nice picture Moss made when he was younger. Kay added the chibi Moss face afterwards.

Moss likes paint a lot! He painted this picture- with his foot holding a dirty paintbrush, and paint splotches everywhere.

Kay once made some art of Moss, with green eyes.

A picture of Moss's wing rune.Stories:The Forest Art ContestMoss carefully rolled up his bark scroll. Today was the most anticipated event ever- the Forest Art Contest! He was about to present his creation- the Leafy Deer! It was one of his most valuable lichen-paintings he had ever made. Day and night he had carefully dyed some pieces of the fungus and carefully placed them in a pretty pattern. It resembled a deer- a noble animal that also lived in the forest. He too, was noble, but not in a deer way.
But then again, the more time he spent here, the later he would arrive! He hastily picked up his artwork and hopped onto one of his maple tree's 'bridge branches'. He called them this because they were think, sturdy, and led to more trees! Plus, the Gathering Hollow was nearby. Moss hopped through the small hole and arrived at the Canopy Lodge- only to find the artist competition, plain as black on white!
The red squirrel host welcomed Moss heartily. "Welcome to the annual Forest Art Contest! I'm Redd, the host. You got here just in time! You're Moss, I assume?" The rune nodded. "Perfect! Its actually your turn, so go up and present." Moss nodded and put his artwork on the canvas. He cleared his throat and began his speech. "I'm Moss, Rune of The Forest. I have here, on this bark scroll, a picture crafted by myself. Feast your eyes upon my masterpiece!" Moss unrolled the bark scroll.
"I call it The Leafy Deer." Moss stated, eyes shining. The audience, a mix of woodland animals, oohedandwowed at his skill. Moss bowed and cleared his throat again. "Ahem! Does anyone have any questions?" A small brown hand flew up. "Yes?" The rune asked, awaiting the question. "How did you get the... the stuff to look like that?" Voices mumbled in agreement. "I painted them myself." Moss said proudly, grinning. "But... what's p-p-a-i-n-n-n-t-t-t-t?" A young red squirrel stepped out from the crowd, trying to understand the weird word.
Moss picked up one of his spare paintbrushes he had brought with him. "Paint is a marvelous substance. You use it to color things shades of reds and blues, dashed with purple and grey. The squirrel frowned. "But why use paint when there's other things to use for color?" It asked. Moss tsked, annoyed. He had never thought of that before. "Paint is paint. Paint is perfect for coloring things." He said without thinking. Nods from the crowd were present."Oh." The squirrel frowned, as if disappointed, and disappeared into the crowd.
No other hands came from the crowd. Moss smiled. "Okay then, looks like I have to wrap this up. You've been a great audience." he bowed and wrapped up his scroll. Moss exited the lodge and hopped on the branches to his tree. He set the scroll in his tree-hollow and looked at the sky. Now, for the next contest, he would do a pumpkin, made out of leaves and lichen...
Teacher For A Day?!Moss tsked indignantly. He had just been invited to teach the noisy sparrow class. Sparrows were one of the worst birds ever! But he had been asked politely. So, begrudgingly, he'd accepted the offer. It was in the Grand Oak Hall- an area that was secretly accessible by a tree root- the classroom. No time to waste now. If he got there early, he could leave early! Moss hopped out his tree, stroked it affectionately, and hopped off to the Grand Oak Tree.
The young rune trekked through the marshy lands near the forest, and crossed the creek. He was rewarded with his efforts by the sighting of the Grand Oak Tree! He eagerly dashed towards it. He pressed his tail to the tree and hopped into the entrance. A female sparrow flew down. "Welcome to our humble tree, newcomer. I am Grace." Moss nodded politely and replied, "I'm Moss, the new teacher." Grace chortled earnestly, "Why didn't you say that, young lad! I'll show you to the rascals right now." Moss fell silent. Such annoying and fast-talking creatures! But there was no need to be rude. He was led into a small alcove, much like his own tree-hole, but bigger. Sparrows of all kinds were perched on little stands. Notes and staffs were pasted on the walls.
"You'll be teaching choral today, rune. Sparrow Chorus, meet Moss- your substitute for Sir Cloud." Dull chirps echoed throughout the area. Moss blinked his eyes in disbelief. Choral?! I've never taught anything of the sort! Grace scolded the sparrows. "Be polite, you messy-feathered pupils." She added and placed some notes on a nearby stand. "This is what you'll be teaching." Grace said. Moss nodded sourly. Music? He had only the faintest idea of music. It was too loud for his tastes.
"What have you been practicing, class?" Moss asked, feeling rather dumb. "Scales! Scales from Do-So to So-Do!" A male sparrow chimed. Scales? He vaguely remembered scales. Moss awkwardly picked up a conducting baton. He waved it, and delicate and dream-like voices burst out.
"Do...Re...Mi...Fa...So...So Fa Mi Re Do, do." Sparrows chirped silkily. But one of them was looking rather sulky. Moss straightened and continued. "Good, very good. Now, for attendance." The sulky sparrow, who had a red crest on his head (assuming it was a he because of his plumage) frowned, feathers bristling. "Feather?" "Here." A pretty red sparrow replied. "Aer?" The rune called. "Right here!" A white and brown bird chirped.
"Beck?
Dandelion?
Chestnut?
Blake?"
All of the birds were accounted for. But one more name was on the list. "Gem?" "Here." Gem, who turned out to be the red crest sparrow, nodded gloomily. Moss cleared his throat and began, "Now, I've heard you've all been practicing-" "Moss, can I be excused?" Gem interrupted. Eyes rounded on the sparrow. Tsking quietly, the rune watched him. "Why?" "I want to talk to Grace." Gem mumbled. Moss's expression softened. "You can talk with me." He stated quietly, and Gem walked out of the room. Rumors buzzed with the sparrows.
"Stay here, all of you." Moss ordered, and exited the room. He found Gem in a corner, weeping. He walked over to the bird and
stroked the sparrow's wing gently. "There's no need to be sad, my friend." He said soothingly. Tears began coming to the floor. "There is! I can't sing!" Gem sobbed, shrinking away from the rune. Moss frowned. "Well, why did you join choral then?" Gem stopped crying. "I wanted to sing." He said sadly.
Moss shook his head. "You might need to practice more, then," He added. Gem blinked. "Do you think I could really sing, Mr. Moss?" He nodded. The sparrow's eyes shone. "I'll practice!" He chimed in, smiling. Moss nodded again, also smiling. He brought the sparrow back into choral. "Time to resume the lesson!" He said enthusiastically.
"When the clouds dance and the sea glows like the sun... Starburst will come to your help, shining like a golden cinnabun..."
Moss conducted the complete choral, now composed of happily singing sparrows. They were singing an ancient religious song, about Starburst, their idea of a guardian. He swung the baton in an arch, in 'Two four time' as they called it.
"He'll be there, he'll be there, and shine!" The choral held the last note, and then Moss nodded. "Good job today! Remember to come tomorrow!" The choral filtered out of the room, and the rune exited as well.
"Perfect job, Mr Moss!" Grace chirped proudly, waving her wing towards the exit. "You're dismissed." Moss tsked quietly, and walked out the door. Time to get back to Kay's place!
Rune footsteps echoed quietly on the forest floor. He had hiked through the swamp, and crossed the creek again. Now he was merely meters away from his tree. He climbed up, deposited his small profit of berries in his hollow, and dashed down. He hopped through the cottage's open door, and trekked up the stairs. When he entered the room, he saw Kay wasn't there. But it didn't matter now. He affectionately plopped other bed, and fell asleep soundly.
Kay entered the room. Swimming practice had been exhausting, and it was time for a nap. She was about to rest when she saw Moss, tuckered out, on her bed. Poor little rune. She went on the unoccupied side of the bed, and looked outside. How peaceful it was. She yawned and fell asleep. How tiring was Moss's adventure? Only he knew.Tree DefenseMoss wielded his new paintbrush and whipped his maple tree with a streak of red. He needed to mark his tree, and paint may be the answer. He admired it for a bit and then turned around. A squirrel! It was a jet black squirrel with a red leafy bracelet. And it didn't look too happy. "Give up your treasure." It sneered, and then pointed to his tree. "Or this goes chop-chop. Goodbye tree."
Moss quivered with anger. His tree! "Never." He said defiantly. "I have nothing that a scoundrel like you would want." The squirrel chortled coldly. "I have you surrounded, fool." Moss shook his head and turned around. Eyes- beady black eyes- were staring at him! He really was surrounded. But they could not take his beloved tree! He would fight them all. He was not a fighting rune. But if his tree's fate depended on it, he would do it. Anger swelled up inside him.
"You have no right to be near my tree, fuzzballs." Moss cried boldly, shaking uncontrollably. The leader growled at him. "Lord Ebony has every right to be here. You do not." Moss felt his patience burst. He lashed out at the squirrel with his claws, covering Ebony in lichen. A squirrel in the shadows chuckled. "Fungus of some sort is like a leaf to Ebony. Nothing at all!" Moss felt an idea coming. "Why not eat it then? If it is a leaf, no harm will be done." Ebony smirked. "Wise choice. After I'm done, your tree will become ours." She said sarcastically, then gulped down the lichen.
Jet-black foes froze as Ebony coughed and wheezed. Moss's lips curled in a rare smile. She couldn't swallow. Alarmed cries rang out in the forest.
"Lord Ebony, spit it out!"
"You'll survive!"
"Its nothing but a worthless plant!"
But Ebony didn't survive. She coughed the lichen out, black eyes misty and pale, and collapsed. Hidden enemies sprung from their places, hungry for revenge. Moss was soon pounded on by scratching claws. Sharpened claw marks burned on his skin. He shed some lichen to confuse his foes, and escaped the mass. He needed to get back to his tree! Moss scuttled up, avoiding the barrage of vengeful animals and safely made it to his tree-hole.
However, the squirrels didn't give up. These started climbing up the maple tree, laying siege to it. Lichen quivered with each paw moved higher, making Moss rather anxious. What could he do? Kay was probably exploring elsewhere, gathering berries. But Kay was bigger than the squirrels. An idea began forming in his mind.
"Kaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyyy!" The rune cried, and his bearer came running. She hopped to the maple tree defensively. "What's wrong?" She asked gently, and Moss gestured to the squirrel invaders. "Ah." She nodded, and then began shaking the tree. Moss held on to his beloved tree. What was she doing? If she managed to get the squirrels off, he'd be shaken off, too!
Jet-black squirrels began sliding off the tree. Kay swung her arm at them, and the squirrels began scattering. "All you had to do was call." She winked, and headed off to her cottage. "If only you knew, Kay. If only you knew..." Moss trailed off, watching his bearer disappear.Trapped!Moss pulled his traveling back on. Kay had looked terribly ill this morning, and he was responsible for having her get better. Her 'mother' had said it was a form of fever, and Moss knew some water, pure and fresh, would cure it. He hopped out of his tree, touched it fondly, and hiked away.
He arrived at the swamp at about noon. He was only a quarter or so to the springs, but better on his way than not. He decided to unpack his lunch- apples and bread with maple syrup! He eagerly spread the syrup over his bread and apples, then took a bite. Delicious! Moss was so absorbed in his meal that he didn't notice a raven behind him. It threw a leaf at him, coated in a sleeping potion, and the rune blinked. He hastily put his things back in his bag, put his back on, and flopped to the ground, sleeping.
That raven, Lord Rak, cawed to his reinforcements. "Get the feather-heads over here! We have a no-feathered prisoner." A pack of 6 ravens flew over. "Serves the thing right, crossing on our territory." One bird named Sterlid chirped. "What an odd creature! Much like the one we found earlier." Another raven named Bobeak cawed. "We may be selling these things." Lord Rak said cruelly, lifting the rune in the air. "Let's go." He said, and his ravens flew with him to his fortress- a large tree to the north.
While Rak was dealing with Moss, Kay was in a frenzy. Moss had gone without telling her! She was too weak to get up, out of bed, but it didn't matter. She looked out the window. No rune in sight. It was almost 12:15 and he hadn't been seen. She sighed and hopped back into bed. How could she wait if her rune was in trouble?
Kerrigan blinked. She had been sitting in the dark too long. There was an opening, but no light was let in. She was pretty sure she was going insane, chained up to a wall like this. She growled and tugged on the chains. She had never been able to bite through them, even with her sharp teeth. Voices echoed from the outside. Someone was here! About time. She was hungry. She listened intently.
"Where should we put this one, chief?" A pause. Probably a lower-ranking raven. "In with the other one. Its useless." That was Lord Feather-head. Sounded like someone- a slave, maybe?- was coming her way! "Should we keep the goods?" Treasure! Obviously they would keep the goods, bee-brain. "Store the goods." A gruff voice said. Again, with Rak. "Throw him in now." Rak added.
Kerrigan braced herself for the sight. The door opened, and Rak- with a dazed-looking rune, how cruel!- chucked his prisoner in. Two assistants started chaining it up. She snickered quietly. "Hey, I bet you can chain the guy up faster than your friend." She whispered. Grinning, the raven quickened his pace. Kerrigan scrambled over to the other raven. "Your bud's competitive. You can time this one up faster!" She added, smirking. Talons flew as the other rune was tied up.
"You can't catch me!" One raven cawed. Feathers flew as the ravens exited, forgetting about the door. Kerrigan nudged the rune. Could be dead, but she could try. "Hey, wake up." She said, and the rune stirred. She prodded it with her wing-claw. "Hurry! Wake up!" It stirred again, and blinked open its eyes. By the looks of it, this rune was lost.
Moss blinked. Where was he? Another rune- it didn't look like one, with its big head, jaws and wings, but it had to be- was staring at him like he'd appeared from nowhere. "Who in the name of Eldemore are you?" He asked curiously. Moss knew he needed to escape. "Kerrigan, but no time to chat. You need to get out of here." He looked down and saw chains around him! He could escape them, sure, but there was no key. Kerrigan seemed to read his mind. "Those chains were so poorly locked up their probably loose. Try wriggling out." Moss paused for a moment. Wriggling out of chains? That seemed a bit stupid. But it could work. Wiggling, Moss tried to get the chains off.
Amazingly, the chains came off with ease. Moss opened his mouth when the other rune interrupted. "Those ravens were in a competition that I started." She snickered, then resumed speaking. "Help me, would you?" This rune was rude, but helpful. Moss knew she would be his best ally, even if she was on the annoying side. He put some lichen on the chains and they snapped with ease. Kerrigan's eyes widened. "Who are you anyway? And where did you learn how to do that?!" Moss smiled weakly. "I'm Moss. Being a lichen rune, I can create lichen." Kerrigan smirked. "Lichen rune? I'm a Giganto rune. That's a dinosaur." Moss nodded and waddled out the door.
Kerrigan followed Moss intently. She closed the door behind her, and then dashed to catch up with the male rune. He was relieved that he had someone to help him, even in this bird dynasty- nothing like anything he had ever seen. Gee, and I thought the Grand Oak was big. He shook his head as he exited the black and dusty, dungeon-like place he had been kept in.
As the rune duo was escaping, Rak was enjoying a berry banquet. He picked up a goblet of strawberry juice, sipping it delicately. Two of his ravens came in. "Our prisoners have been locked up in the dungeons." One chirped. "All chained up!" Blacbeak chimed in. Rak nodded approvingly. "Good." He cawed coldly, setting his goblet on the table. Another raven, Primwing, came rushing in.
"The prisoners! They're gone!" She cried. Rak picked up his sword, "Feathers and pin sap! You dumb bee-brains let them ESCAPE!?!" Blacbeak glared at her. "They're still there!" he retorted defiantly. Rak narrowed his eyes. "Well check them, or you're going to the dungeons." Blacbeak and his companion Ebonyripple sped off sullenly. Rak rose from his gold-studded perch. "I'll deal with this myself then." He flew past Primwing, who was left alone in the chamber.
Moss turned at another dead end. "So complicated." he heard Kerrigan moan under her breath. They were getting no where. He turned back and arrived at the oak hall again. He nudged the other rune. "We'll escape." Moss said patiently. Kerrigan spat angrily. "I have no patience for these ravens!" She choked out. Her foot kicked a berry across the floor. SPLAT! Berry juice scattered on the wood wall. But not all of it was the reddish juice color. "Its the exit!" Moss cried. Kerrigan called to the running rune, "Wait! It's the-" Moss vanished. "Dungeon tunnel!" Kerrigan's voice echoed faintly.
Kerrigan glanced across the room. Clangs of metal rang out. Rak! She thought anxiously. She jumped on a table and slalomed across, scattering plates and food alike on the floor. Raven soldiers entered the hall, eyes fixed pm the troublesome rune. She talked the dungeon tunnel entrance, and went through with ease.. A burst of pain speared Kerrigan on her right wing. It was mincemeat now, stuck like this, She grabbed a wingful of mud and flung it at her wing. It made a squelch noise, and loosened slightly. "Got you now!" a triumphant voice cawed. A spear hit her wing, freeing it, as Kerrigan slipped down into the void.
Moss heard Rak's voice dance down the tunnel, into the room he had landed in. "Foolish feather-brained minions! You let her ESCAPE?!" Kerrigan! She had made it! Sure enough, the mucky tan body came sliding down. Teeth bared, Kerrigan sighed. "I barely escaped them!" She breathed. Moss nodded. We have to escape, like now." There was a hint of urgency in her voice. Moss prodded the surrounding stones. They didn't look very weak. He groaned and threw some lichen at the ground. Rumbling echoed from somewhere. A rock crashed on Kerrigan' head. "Oh, no... the tunnel is going to collapse!"
Moss and his new ally dashed into a nearby crevice they'd found. Kerrigan flinched as sawdust poured on head. "Ptoo! How long are we going to stay here?" A CRASH answered her question. "No longer- let's get out of here!" Moss huffed. Finally free, the runes hopped away from the tree fortress, determined to escape in one piece.
Rak scowled. His prisoners were gone! He exited his tree and saw his slaves escaping, He speared one with an extra javelin, but it didn't collapse. One shouted something and Rak was trapped in a web of lichen! He fell to the ground, watching the escapees smirking and running away. Drat them, curse them! He tore apart the fungus and yelled his battle cry: "For Oakia! Guards, get them!"
Moss waved to Kerrigan. I'm going to my bearer now." Kerrigan's eyes sparkled. "Bearer? Why not stay here, with me?" Moss shook his head. "I belong with Kay, not with you." He replied sadly. Kerrigan nodded. "I understand..." She trailed off, and hopped away. Moss looked at the space where Kerrigan had been. His provisions! He picked up his bag and went back to his tree. He put his bag aside and picked up a peculiar feather that had stuck to him. Perfect.
Lichen sprung at Moss's footsteps. He was home! Eagerly, he dashed up the stairs and into Kay's room. She still looked a bit shaky, but better. "Its 6:13... where is- oh! Moss!" The rune hopped on to Kay's bed. Kay's arms hugged Moss tightly. "You're okay!" She sobbed, and tears flowing out. "I'm so glad you came back." She smiled, and watched as the little rune fell asleep. She put Moss in his nest. And plopped back into bed. "Sweet dreams, Moss." Kay whispered, and snuggled into her covers.
The Two MuseumsMoss followed Kay into the strange building. It appeared to be divided in two parts: a tunnel shaped part, and a leaf-shaped part. "We're visiting a greenhouse and aquarium, Moss." Kay informed him, as Moss followed behind closely. "What's an aquarium? How big is the greenhouse?" He asked, and Kay stopped to scoop him up. "An aquarium is where they keep water creatures, like fish. The greenhouse is huge!" Moss smiled as they got to the crossroad. Let's go to the greenhouse part! Moss cheered as Kay turned to the aquarium. Okay then. She replied evenly, and sighed. "I wanted to go see the rays, but I guess we can't." Moss grinned in satisfaction.
"What's that?" Moss gestured to a vicious looking plant with a mouth and some green teeth. "That's a venus fly trap." Kaylee stated. "It eats bugs that land in it." Moss shuddered. "That sounds... disgusting." He tsked in distaste. Kaylee waved her hand absently. "There's many carnivorous plants. Like this pitcher plant." She walked over to a green thing that looked like a vase, Moss in her arms. Moss shrank away. "Does it trap flies in it?" Kay shook her head. "No. It's more painful. This plant lets bugs slip into it, and get stuck in some stuff near the bottom. While it's stuck, it gets eaten... and uh, dies." Moss flinched. "Make's me glad I'm not a bug." He murmured, glaring at the plant with intense hatred.
Kay walked over to the next table. "Exotic plants!" She said happily. She placed Moss on the table. Turning around, the rune saw an interesting thing- a plant with eyeballs on it! "Wow, what is that?" Kay smiled. "It's an eyeball plant. It's flowers are shaped like eyes." Seeing Moss's disturbed expression, she hastily added, "It's not carnivorous." Moss sighed. "Good thing!" Kay poked another flower. "This one looks cool- its called 'Cavendishia Grandifolia'. Look at those flowers hanging off like that- fascinating." Moss gestured towards another shelf- garden flowers. "Let's go over there! Maybe there's some beautiful flowers." Kaylee nodded impatiently. "I wanted to look more at these, but okay." She picked the lichen rune up and progressed on to the next table.
Moss frowned. This table wasn't as pretty and exciting as he thought it would be. "This display is a bit... lacking in terms of interest." Kay nodded. "Flowers are flowers. These are just common, so I guess they're not very exciting for you." Moss smiled. "Definitely. Let's go on to see those exquisite marine animals!" Kay grinned back. "Perfect idea."
Rays danced over Kay's head. This aquarium was really an 'Aqua-Tunnel'- an aquarium that featured sharks and coral before you very eyes: surrounding you! A mako shark stared at Moss with interest. "Tsk tsk, no staring." The rune muttered at his watcher, despite not being able to communicate with it. Kaylee turned to the shark. "What, do you think my lil' rune is awesome too?" Bubbles were left in the shark's place. Moss shrugged. "Guess not."
Kay approached the next area. "Looks like fish." She said, awestruck at all the marine creatures. A brownish white fish passed by. "A lionfish!" Moss exclaimed. Kay looked at Moss. "How did you know that?" Moss shrugged. "There was a sign with a picture of it over there." He answered. Kaylee nodded, impressed, and walked on. A pink lizard with feathery red gills swam by. "That's not a fish, is it?" A nearby boy asked his father. "No, that's an axolotl. It's a type of amphibian." Moss watched the axolotl intently. "Cool." he said, dumbfounded. "Fascinating." Kay corrected, looking at her watch. "Oh, look. Its 4:20. We need to leave, Moss." Moss frowned. "Really?" Kaylee sighed. "Yes, really." She said in a finally sort of way, carrying the rune out of the aqua tunnel.
Kay placed Moss in his cage. They were in her room, Kay eagerly writing her discoveries down, Moss watching. "What are you writing about?" He asked curiously. "Our museum endeavor!" Kay said proudly. The rune scanned the paper, then added, "Why is there nothing about the axolot-thing?" "Axolotl," Kay corrected. "I was just getting to that." Her pencil whizzed across the white parchment. "There. Done!" She smiled, holding it up to Moss. He couldn't read it, but nodded anyway. "Sweet." Kaylee grinned. "Now to file this away. I'm going to show it to my science teacher." Moss blinked. "What, it’s for a grade?" She shook her head. "Nah, just extra credit." Moss smiled. "Good luck with that then."
Kay added sarcastically, "Thanks. But I won't need it- you can't get bad grades on extra credit, can you?" Moss cocked his head. "Maybe- but sure, you might get some decent points for it."
Poems And Haiku
♣Poems:
[size=85]A piece of bark is a canvas!
The whole world is a stage!
A forest artist takes his time
While my fungus flourishes,
As my work grows in age.
The lines so exact!
My technique is divine!
By golly,
I'm feeling more than fine.
The world is ever-changing!
So much work to be done!
Colorful paintings galore created
From a simple forest run.♣Haiku:The silent artist
Creating a world of moss
A hidden lichen rune
Lichen can climb trees
The sun peeks over the them
Making them glow
Lightning strikes the dust
It destroys what's there now but
New life is coming

Bearer Info wrote:|.Name.| Lenora Q. Kwigny or Len for short
|.Age.|
|.Birthday.|
|.Personality.| Lenora is a spunky tomboyish sort of girl. She loves to
be outside with Flora and adding to their vast and
beautiful garden. Len has a large caring heart and is
always helping others, but especially animals. She is a
true adventurer at heart and one day hopes to find a
rune species of her own.
Vester`s Info wrote:|.Name.| Slyvestre... Sly or Vester for short
|.Name Meaning.| Vester`s name is the French form of Latin Silvester
meaning "from the forest"
|.Gender.|
|.Age.|
|.Birthday.|
|.Personality.| Vester is very, very creative if he isn`t sculpting, then he`s
sketching in the dirt. When ever you walk into the forest in
which he inhabits then you could see sculptors positioned
just so and sketches everywhere.
Outgoing is a very good word to describe Slyvestre. He is
always trying to do better and never thinks he does well
enough. He is also very friendly when meeting new runes
and people.
Vester is also very headstrong. Once Vester makes up his
mind or starts something it is hard, near impossible to
change his mind. He is also very headstrong in his beliefs
and other things like that.
He is also very social and friendly rune. Vester often makes
up Flora`s shyness and the runes seem to be good friends.
Vester is often chittering and making wild moments with
his wings. Often it seems like he can talk to Len, even though
he can.
Sly is also a good peace maker. He can often be found talking
to squirrels or birds, seemingly helping them work something
out. Overall Vester is a pretty peaceful rune.
Vester is also a very good story teller. He loves to weave together
tales and legends for younger runes and older runes alike. It
almost does seem as if he can weave stories out of the lichen
and moss the clings to his body.
|.Quirks.| Vester has the quick of trying to turn Len`s cabin into a living
forest. He sculpts his lichen all over the walls and well any
other solid object he can. Sly also loves sour gummy worms and
toast. If Len were to let him that`d be all he`d eat.
Questions For Me wrote:|.Where I`d Keep Vester.| Well I am currently working on a rune aviary for my
runes. Vester also sleeps in a little hammock filled
with moss. He refreshes it often, so it stays soft.
Vester would also get his turn in my signature for
all of CS to see and love.
|.Why I Want Vester.| I am just speechless every time I see him. I just have
this feeling that he belongs with me and Flora. He is
also very handsome and I love the amount of detail
that he has in his design. I just know he would be
perfect as the first rune I actually won.
|.Would I Like To Breed Vester.| Yes! I can imagine cute little lichen runes running
around. I would be very picky though on choosing
the perfect girl for him.
