"Papa, look! There's a horse!" Amelia's squeal of joy rang out through the otherwise silent forest. Her small body wriggled off the seat of the sleight and her mitten nearly flew from her hand with her enthusiastic pointing. "Look, Papa! He's beautiful." Before her papa could even fully bring the sleigh to a halt, Amelia had leapt from the seat and into the powdery snow below.

Not two hundred yards ahead of her, a nearly all white Arabian stallion stood chewing a strip of bark. His ears perked up at the girl's cry, but food was too scarce in the wood for him to run from such a small creature - even if it was loud. Even if the creature had seemed dangerous, there were other horses near it, and they didn't seem to be bothered by its cries. Little creatures like this used to throw him bread over the pasture fence, so he knew they meant no harm.

"Don't run horsie," Amelia breathed, remembering to be quiet and slowing her pace. She pulled off a red mitten and held her hand out, walking toward the horse slowly. When he backed up a step she nearly cried, but then remembered the Christmas cookies in her pocket. "Are you hungry? Do you want a Christmas Cookie? My mama made them for me, but you can have one, too!" Digging a cookie out of her pocket, she held it out, barely even breathing while she waited.

It took Marvin a few minutes of pondering, but finally, with an exasperated sigh, he walked forward and took the cookie from the girl's hand, and with it, he stole her heart.
