- A Brief Introduction
Within the deepest reaches of a mysterious forest area, explorers have discovered a docile mammalian species with similar characteristics of a deer. Named 'Laurelei', these creatures have somehow become fused with a wide variety of plant life. No one knows what happened within the forest to have caused such a phenomenon, so in a quest for knowledge, scientists and adventurers alike have set up camps in the area to explore the forest and unlock the mystery behind these strange animals.
From the moment their first flowers bloom, each Laurelei is accompanied by a unique bird that keeps insects away from their delicate flowers. These birds are accurately titled 'the caretaker' because they are often more intelligent than their Laurelei, and also because Laurelei become quickly distressed without the presence of their avian companion.
Diet
The dietary habits of Laurelei are the prime source of information that scientists have utilized to study these strange animals. Their primitive digestion tract suggests that Laurelei were not made for consuming food at all. In fact, their main source of energy is through a unique variant of photosynthesis from both the flowers and the leaves that grow from their bodies. The purpose of the vegetation is mainly for energy production, thanks to this, Laurelei don't usually eat anything at all, but require lots of water for survival.
In the wintertime, Laurelei shed their vegetation and retire to secluded dens or caves to hibernate. Without the energy from the sunlight, their coats become dull in color. In the late winter, their leaves begin to grow back, and once their leaves grow fully back, Laurelei awake from their hibernation, usually around early spring.
Appearance
The physical characteristics of Laurelei are similar to that of a deer, mingled with traits of a dog. All Laurelei have some type of horns, lush vegetation, and large, stocky legs. However, some are known to have unique horns, different lengths of fur, and even unique or multiple tails.
The variety of plants that Laurelei sport are endless. The vegetation commonly grows on the shoulders, tail and the base of the horns, but there seems to be no limit to unique variations in each Laurelei's appearance.
Additionally, there is an uncanny resemblance between Laurelei and their caretakers. The reason why is still unknown, as studying the caretakers is a difficult business.
