═══════════════ W H A T I S A C A V E L I N G ? ═══════════════

a caveling is a unique type of fox that has adapted to living underground, often in
abandoned mines and caves that are already carved out and provide plenty of space. they are
larger than most other fox species, adults standing about as tall as a average wolf and babies
being born the size of a household rabbit. there is no distinction between males and females other
than the fact that males are slightly larger and flluffier. cavelings are often spotted carrying a
lantern of some sort to help light the caverns they call home.

although cavelings have developed large pupils that help them see in the dark, they still find it
difficult to use their sense of sight without some sort of light source. most cavelings have taken
to carrying around some sort of lantern to help light a path through the dark caves they call
home. these lanterns vary due to individual preference and can be anything from just a candle
to a jar of phosphorescent rock!

the large ears of the caveling indicate that it relies primarily on hearing to get around dark
places. the ears pick up and magnify even minute soundwaves that help it pinpoint an object's
location. additionally, this unique species has developed a vocal structure that allows it to produce
a series of clicks, much like a bat, so that it may use echolocation. however it seems that this
process is not quite refined yet and cavelings may sometimes bump straight into walls if relying
solely on this method alone.

minute nostrils suggest that cavelings do not use their sense of smell whatsoever. it is the
long whiskers growing near the nostrils that are of much more interest. these whiskers enhance
a caveling's touch, if you will. they can use them to help feel their surroundings directly on
either side of their head. scientists also speculate that these whiskers are sensitive enough
to be able to pick up waves of seismic activity - cavelings always know to run before a cave in.

their retractable claws are specialised for digging, so that if need be a caveling will be able
to carve out its own den. however they prefer to find an abadoned cavern of some sort that they
may take over and make their own. some cavelings choose to add on to previously existing dens.

despite how large they look, cavelings have very slender builds that allow them to squeeze
through crevices and the like. the widest part of their body is their head, so they will always be able
to know if they can fit somewhere or not. the extra fur on their bodies has helped them adapt to
the cool temperatures underground.

cavelings tend to be timid creatures, only approaching other animals and humans
after they have proved they can trust them. in the face of danger they would rather flee than
fight. by nature most cavelings are also rather inquisitve and love to explore nooks and
crannies they find below ground. they will come above ground every so often, but would
rather surface during the night so that the light doesn't strain their eyes.

• h a b i t a t •
these creatures will make their home in any abandoned underground cavern they
can find, whether it was once an animals den, a mine, or even a river. for the most part they
are rather solitary creatures and prefer to have their own den for themselves, but do not mind
sharing with their mate or sometimes other close family members.

• d i e t •
cavelings are largely insectivores. as a result they have adapted very long tongues
that allow them to reach into small crevices and holes in the rock, as well as slender snouts
to aid them. if need be, a caveling will revert to eating plant matter as well but cannot digest
this as well, so may sometimes be seen eating small rocks or minerals to aid the process.

hello everyone, welcome to the very first "event" that we are hosting!

so i've developed this species, but for the life of me i cannot
come up with a cute and catchy name! here's where you come in!
i'm going to offer a custom to whoever can give me a name that
i think fits the species and will hopefully draw attention to them.

basic species information has been posted in the first post, but
i shall be posting more shortly so keep an eye out, and good luck! <3

for the record so far, my favourite suggestions are
cavelings and lantern light foxes, just to give you
an idea of what i like.
