What is a Helix?
Helix are medium-sized semi-aquatic creatures that live in coastal regions, usually in or around beaches. At first glance resemble a canine such as a fox or wolf in build. Unlike a fox or wolf however they have rather big ears which, whilst young, appear rather rabbit or antenna-like. Their long legs end in three-toed paws which are equipped with retractable claws for gripping and holding. They have a thick, oily coat which is waterproof. This helps to keep them warm them against the cold seashore waters of their habitat.
Primarily piscivorous meaning that they eat any fish, crustaceans or shellfish they happen upon, Helix are known to also prey upon sea birds (including chicks and eggs), seals and the carrion of beached dolphins, whales and sharks using their adapted jaws and teeth to pry open shells and to crunch bone and cartilage.

Perhaps the most notable feature of the Helix is the large bulky ammonite-like shell that they carry over their rumps which give them a shellfish-like appearane. Whilst newborns and juveniles use these shells as a form of protection, little is known about the use of the shell for older individuals. On a mature adult these hefty shells may contribute to up to 40% of the Helix's overall weight. To keep this shell nice and strong Helix will consume large quantities of calcium.
They are social within their own species, forming colonies of 5 - 20 individuals. Multiple colonies may co-exist on single beaches or coastlines. Helix are very vocal animals, using a wide range of vocalisation to communicate. The sounds they make are so diverse and frequently used that the Helix as a species may indeed have developed their form of sophisticated language.

1. Please respect and follow the rules of both CS and this adoption centre.

2. If the Helix you want has already been taken then please do not complain about it.

3. Do not mini-mod on the thread. For now I have it handled until/if I decide to hire some mods of my own.

4. Please do not ask to be a member of staff. I will ask for staff if and when I feel it is necessary. Artists fall under the staff category.

5. Customs are currently only offered to members of staff. Each member of staff may have one custom.

6. Each person may own a total of five Helix. This is subject to change depending on demand.

7. You may not sell, re-adopt or give away your Helix. Should you no longer want it then please contact either myself or the artist who created it to work through a re-adoption solution.

8. Once you get your Helix you may add sensible accessories such as necklaces, scarves, etc. Please ask myself or the Artist before adding any piercings/fur dyes.

9. You may take your Helix off of Chicken Smoothie so as long as you credit where necessary. If you leave CS then you may take your Helix with you.

10. Helix may not be Fursonas.

11. Helix must remain in each growth stage for one month minimum. You are not obligated to age them if you do not want to, or you can prolong the aging process if you'd like. When the time comes to age them, however, PM the artist and ask them.

12. If you have any problems or questions feel free to shoot me a PM or post here =)

1. Helix come in an array of nice colours, patterns and designs, however please do not create a sparkle Helix. Also, although its most ideal for a Helix's shell colour to stand out from it's fur, it's not a big deal if they don't.

2. There are three different sized colour swatches available. Large swatches for fur colours, medium swatches for shell colours and the smallest swatches for eye, nose and for the inside of the ears.

3. Males tend to have brighter colours and patterns on their shells.

4. Helix may have up to four fur colours and four shell colours. The eyes, nose and the insides of the ears can be any colour. Delete any unused swatches. If you have a design idea that involves more colours then please PM me before.

5. Please ask me before doing any major lineart edits other than some minor accessories.

6. You may use the adult/juvenile/baby lines only for when creating a premade, however you must be prepared to grow it when the owner asks it. A Helix must stage in each growth stage for a minimum of 1 month.

7. You may also create your own lines if you'd prefer =)

Image
1. GAs must adhere to the above rules.

2. Each GA may create a total of three Helix to be put up for adoption, plus one custom for themselves. If you become a GA again later then you may not create another custom.

3. If you're designs are liked enough then I may consider asking you to become a full-time artist. Asking to be a full-time artist will greatly reduce your chances.

4. You may not create a Helix with any items or line edits.

5. When you apply for a GA slot I will choose depending on quality/creativeness of designs. It is not based on a first-come basis.

Size Guide
Baby - Chihuahua
Juvenile - Beagle
Adult - Labrador Retriever - Great Dane

Size is measured at the shoulder of the Helix and excludes the shell. [/size]

Helix are medium-sized semi-aquatic creatures that live in coastal regions, usually in or around beaches. At first glance they resemble a canine such as a fox or wolf in build. Unlike a fox or wolf however they have rather big ears which, whilst young, appear rather rabbit or antenna-like. Their long legs end in three-toed paws are equipped with retractable claws for gripping and holding, which is highly necessary as they often scour through slippery rock pools in search of tasty crabs and shellfish. Contrary to initial belief Helix are quite a bold species and many wild individuals will not tolerate the presence of a human being. Early domestication can help overcome these aggressive traits.

They hunt by wading into rock pools or into the shoreline where they then dip their heads beneath the water. Amazing they able to hold their breath underwater for up to six minutes at a time. A special membrane covering their eyes and their nostrils also protect them from the corrosive salt water as they hunt.

Once they have found a caught their prey, Helix will retrieve them from the waters. While they can then go onto killing and eating fish and other soft-bodied animals by simply tearing off chunks to swallow, crustaceans and other shellfish must be handled different. In their cases the Helix will forcible bash them against other rocks in order to break or crack the shells.

Perhaps the most notable feature of the Helix is the large bulky ammonite-like shell that they carry over their rumps which give them a shellfish-like appearance. Whilst newborns and juveniles use these shells as a form of protection, little is known about the use of the shell for older individuals. On a mature adult these hefty shells may contribute to up to 40% of the Helix's overall weight. This weight also means that the Helix is unable to swim; if one should try swimming they will most certainly sink like a stone, risking death by drowning.

Helix are social within their own species, forming colonies of 5 - 20 individuals, though colonies of up to 80 animals has been recorded in rare instances. Multiple colonies may also co-exist on single beaches or coastlines giving the illusion of a single large unit. Colonies are made up of mostly adult females, juveniles and babies. Mature males live on the side-lines, often travelling to and fro prime breeding grounds in search of mates.
Dominant males, known as 'Beach Masters', will establish certain parts of the beach as their territory which the females may deem to be a suitable nesting ground. During the prime Mating Season (April - August) males will try to win over the females from their colony by standing guard over desirable nesting spots. They may encourage the females to choose them by deliberately placing bait (such as crab) in order to show how plentiful prey is in the area, or by bowing to display their shells. Brightly coloured shelled males are often the ones favoured by females for reasons unknown.

Helix are not a monogamous species. Males will mate with as many females as he can keep safe and he'll rarely help to take care of his young. With each breeding a female will give birth amongst the rock pools in which the male guards, preferably in a nest-like structure that's lined with moist seaweed and bulked with wet sand which helps to keep the babies warm. Even here there is competition as females will fight for the best nesting spots.
The resulting infants are very tiny and somewhat undeveloped with large shells which are very soft and fragile. After 24 hours the shells will finally harden however during the early days they need to consume at lot of calcium in order to keep their shells strong.
Because of their small size they will often remain hidden inside their shells, coming out only when their mother returns to feed them. To ensure that their grow up big and strong Helix pups will need a highly nutritious and fatty diet. Their mothers will at this point work harder to locate bird eggs, birds and fish for their young. Food is fed via regurgitation.

Pups are fed and cared for like this until around four months old, by which time they have grown into their shells. These older pups are called Juveniles. Juveniles leave the rock pool nursery and instead take to the beach and other pools with their mothers who introduce them to other colony members and the world around them.
By six months Juveniles are starting to practice hunt back in the rock pools. Their hunts are rarely successful however they do try to improve their hunting techniques by practicing and playing with other youngsters in the water. A popular game is known as 'find the pebble', in which a pretty pebble, shell or stone is tossed into a rock pool only to be retrieved by the playful youngsters.

At a year Juveniles are much bigger. They are far more independent and are capable of catching small game though a majority of their diet consists of the mussels and shrimps that they find in the rock pools. With new babies to care for the mother now completely disregards her previous offspring. These also puts the youngsters at risk of older males who may view Juvenile males as a potential future threat. Females are not treated with nearly the same hostility.
Adolescence is reached at three years of age. By this point Helix have also reached sexual maturity. Females may either choose to stay where they are, or like the young males they may choose to migrate elsewhere in search of new territory and females.

At five years Helix are considered to be fully mature. By this point they are fully grown with their adult colours, fur and teeth. Their shells on the other hand will continue to slowly grow throughout their lives, gaining a few centimetres a year.
The expected lifespan for a Helix is somewhere between 30 - 40 years.

Occasionally from time-to-time a Helix may not grow any larger than its Juvenile stage. This is known as EPS, or 'Eternal Pup Syndrome'. Helix with EPS will not grow into a mature adult and are unable to breed. Many EPS Helix are known for retaining their child-like quirks and natures throughout their lives, usually preferring a care-free lifestyle.

Helix are very vocal animals, using a wide range of complex vocalisation to communicate. The sounds they make are so diverse and frequently used that the Helix as a species may indeed have developed their form of sophisticated language.

Domestication of adult individuals is rather difficult considering how unpredictable individuals can be - especially during the prime mating seasons. Instead it is recommended that one should steal a baby or an egg from the nursery pools on a populated beach, should one wish to raise it. Adult females, though protective of their young, will often get over the loss of young quickly. Domestication does have its benefits. Those raised by humans tend to show a greater variety of colours than the wild counterparts on top of being much friendlier and easier to handle.
