If you're in the healthcare field or want to be in it, what's your role/career goal?
Would love to see other healthcare professionals (or aspiring to be,) on this site.
Nice to know others who understand the same struggle we go through in this job
because it's definitely not easy after knowing what we have to see and do everyday!

hi there! I'm aspiring to become a clinical/medical laboratory scientist! I feel so close to my goals, yet the best is yet to come--currently, I'm applying to programs and I have my license to train. if anyone here is interested in this career path, please ask away. many do not know that this is a field in medicine and it is an incredibly rewarding job for many people.

Oooh I'm curious! What are your job responsibilities in this role?

thank you for asking! the best way I can explain it in layman's terms is that clinical laboratory scientists are people who work in a hospital/clinic/outsourced lab who run diagnostic testing on patient samples to determine if there's something wrong with them, and if so, what the issue is based on the sample we get. we are essentially the first people to know if something is wrong with a patient. we work with mostly blood, but also other fluids, including the less friendly ones (you know...)--nevertheless, we become specialized in many things (as a generalist) like hematology (blood), immunology, clinical chemistry, microbiology, oncology, etc. we work with automation and manual instrumentation; therefore, we are necessary in troubleshooting and performing diagnostics when something goes awry with our machines and/or results. it is my passion to help people without needing face-to-face contact. I hope this answers your question!

omg that's actually what i assumed the role was initially but i wasn't sure about the exact name of the job title! that's super cool though, you guys really do have an essential role. I do a lot of blood draws, blood cultures, urine cultures, respiratory cultures, etc and tube it up to the lab station, but never get to see in person how you guys run the diagnostics. A lot of our interventions are determined based on the lab results that come back especially for critical results!

Heya o/
I'm actually a MLS II and work in the laboratory of a hospital - Chemistry, Microbiology(setups), and Hematology; formerly Blood Bank before upper management changed our procedures and limited us to less departments. I'm a generalist on second shift, but Chemistry is by far my favorite where I've done advanced operator training on Siemens Atellicas and the Diasorin XL system.
Hematology is probably my weakest area just because it feels like more can go wrong in a way that's not incredibly obvious. Things like, "If the retic count is about this value and also makes the graph look abnormal then one must do a dilution and then program that number into this formula to get an estimated result." XD Meanwhile Chem is just, "Oh, got a number? Looks about the same as the previous? Done." haha
Also to the nurses/doctors/etc.. Please be nice to your lab techs. I swear we don't hemolyze, clot, or delay your sample for the fun of it. v.v
