how did you get into adoptables/closed species communities?

i'm curious to hear how people got started on this stuff :0 i've only just started getting into doing adoptables myself, and i've always been interested in the idea of closed species and the like but. i have absolutely zero idea where people get started with that kind of thing, so i want to hear about other people's experiences!
