Postby TikoTheHuman » Mon Dec 19, 2022 6:51 am

I'm thinking about getting a drawing tablet but I don't know what would be the best for me? I want to be able to use CS on it but I need some help getting a good one, any help would be wonderful! <3

What are your needs? Like do you plan to draw a lot outside of CS, are you new to drawing tablets, what's your budget, etc.

Please be patient with me.
If there's a pet in a non-tradable group that you really want, PM me and something might work out.

I want to be able to draw on Oekaki and be able to free draw as well on the tablet and have easy transport, I don't want a super high-quality one since those are quite expensive but I'd say my budget is probably somewhere between $50-$150-ish dollars. Yes, I am new to drawing tablets as well. And yeah I do plan to draw quite a bit outside of CS. My needs would be something easy to work with, not something really complicated basically.

One more question to make things clearer: Are you looking for a tablet that can draw on its own (something like an iPad), or do you plan on having it connected to a computer? For your budget, many tablets you could afford will fall into the latter category (needing to be connected to a computer)

I would like one that is handheld not connected to a computer. =)

In this case, most deals will be out-of-budget for you. Standalone tablets don't need to be connected to a computer because they are a little computer themselves, thus making the parts more expensive. Assuming you want something with a screen, the cheapest deal I could find is the Simbans PicassoTab for $240 on Amazon. (Note: I haven't tried this tablet myself, so it'll be up to you to do more research on the quality of this one)

Even though it seems to fit your needs the best, if the price is a deal breaker, most of your other options will lie in the screenless tablet category. These tablets need to be connected, and do not have screens (needing some hand-eye coordination to function), but tend to be much more budget friendly. From a cursory look on Amazon, there will be very few screenless tablets that would be above budget.

For connected screen tablets, the best thing I could find is the XPPEN Artist 10, which goes for around $170, but might fall under budget if on sale. While it does need to be connected, it is tiny, making it easy for transport. Because it's tiny though, it'll make your drawing space tiny as well. XPPEN has other tablets of the same series in different sizes (Artist 12, Artist 13, etc) but as you go up in size, the more you'll have to look out for sales.

Interesting.. what would the normal price go for all the needs I want? What would the price be if I had the budget it would cost me?

I would recommend saving up until you have at least $200 in your budget. Getting something that cheap will probably be a poor investment in the long run. You will also have to consider not only the tablet but the kind of pen you will use for it. Personally I might recommend an iPad; you will be able to access CS through it, it is easy to use, and the Apple Pencil is functional and designed to be used along with it. I'm sure it's not the best for drawing, but it's something that you can trust to be fairly sturdy, multi-functional, and easy to transport. This is what I use to draw and it is pretty good. I'm unsure if it works well with Oekaki but I can test it.

Oooo I think I'm qualified to answer this one! Speaking as a digital artist of many years, I actually do recommend getting a cheaper one to start out with! Quality doesn't always equal quantity--I know that some of the name brands are more expensive without actually being that great. It's also good to get a feel for digital art before making a super big investment! Huion is a great starter brand, and they have one as cheap as $40 on Amazon. If you wanted one with an LCD screen, they also have a couple that are under $200 on their website, which is actually pretty cheap for one with a screen. Wacom is also a very popular brand that have a few beginner tablets, although I don't particularly recommend them because they are prone to having driver issues.
