KonMari Discussion + Declutter Journey

Marie Kondo has gained popularity following her new show on Netflix: Tidying Up!
A couple of years ago, I read her book, The Life-Changing Magic Of Tidying Up. This began the movement of her methods, and some people take it to the extremes and have gone completely minimal. The tidying method developed by Marie Kondo is where you only keep things that spark joy for you. If something does not spark joy, you thank it, and put it in a pile for donation. She also has methods for folding clothing, tidying by category - not by room-, and maintaining your home after you are done the initial decluttering. I recommend watching her Netflix show or reading her books if you want to begin your journey to a joyful space!

My Journey:
Over the past two years, I've decluttered items and routines in my apartment. I have reached all my goals of items and time efficiency for University through this! It only takes me 10 minutes each morning to get ready. This has allowed me to make room for things I love! In my spare closet, I've made room for fabric and my sewing machine! I love sewing! I got rid of my giant PC set-up, switched exclusively to my laptop, and TV as a big monitor if need be. In that giant space my PC left, I have put a big fish tank, and even added another fish tank to my desk. My animals spark more joy than having a huge PC! Lately, I've been taking my decluttering journey online. I've removed apps, photos, and other things from my phone and laptop, and now I'm going deeper and decluttering my CS account!

My CS Kon Mari Method and "Waste Management":
I've created my own decluttering method which is a more methodical KonMari:

Any pets I do not feel attached to go into my trading groups. This includes pets that are released every month that just grow and get sorted, and forgotten about. I then look at my wishlist (which I down-sized as well) and if there are pets in my trade groups which are not worth something on my wishlist, I will send those pets to the pound for another user to enjoy!
For items, I will send anything I will not use to the Lost and Found, trading items for me is a bit persnickety as I feel too attached to the smallest items, so it's best for me to just get rid of it in one go.
Before I make a donation to the Pound + Lost and Found, I go on a "Gifting Rampage" and gift random pets and items on user's wishlists that I pick at random from the "Online Users" section of the forums. This means my pets and items will go to someone who wants them and will bring them joy!

Image
My CS Goals:
1. Unsub from EVERYTHING I don't reply to Achieved
2. Have each pet group to under 300 pets Achieved
3. Donate 500,000 pet + items Achieved
4. Be a dress-up celebrity

Do you love the KonMari method?
Have you decluttered your space?
Have you decluttered your CS account?
What are your goals?

We want to hear it! <3

Hello!
First I wanna say that english is not my first language, so sorry about some possible errors XD
I always have been an accumulator - or a collector, as I liked to say. Since I had a childhood in poverty I already liked to collect things, like rocks, flowers or drawings. So when our situation began to change, I started to collect even more things.
Then I started to eat a lot, to save all I could have, to spend all the money I could get my hands into. And I used to enjoy that the most. I still enjoy doing these things...
But 3 years ago I was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, and doing therapy I realized that I could enjoy myself and my life without overdoing things XD
I read The Magic of Organization, by KonMari. I think it is Spark Joy? In my language get translated as "The Magic of Organization"~ An I began to apply it at my clothes, at my food, and at all my clusters! I began in December 2018! The same month that I started ChickenSmoothie XD So is a lot of fun that someone here likes that too
Well, I still addicted to collections, but now I only wanna have like one of everything? I wanna collect all cats! Because I really love them and the bring me a lot of joy! But I really like to collect things, so is really nice to collect them here when I can meet other people, talk about my hobbies and keep drawing a little too.
I'm not in the best moment of my life, but this little things really help me a lot to keep going and keep changing my life to the best! XD
I'm sorry for writing this much
Oh! Since you have a lot of cute pets that I are in my wishlist, I'm sending a trade for your pet declutter XD
And I'm sending you a little caterpillar that is in your wishlist too!

I'm glad you enjoyed her book!

I used to want 1 of each pet, but then it got too exhausting. Then I realised I don't actually NEED 1 of each pet, and I only had a few pets I loved a lot anyways! I joined in 2011, so I had lots of time to collect, now I have heaps of pets I never knew I had. They just got put away into their groups and forgotten about. I hope to only have 100 pets (all species) one day! I am a fair ways away though :)

My situation might be different from what Marie Kondo envisioned in her audience but I will benefit from her advice all the same. I have to give up not only things that do not spark joy, but also those that do. Things in my home have been contaminated and I can only keep a small percent of my possessions before moving--possessions that I've held with great importance.
The two main tips she has given that I will benefit from are A) expressing gratitude toward your thing when you decide to give it up and B) focusing on what you most want to keep, rather than what to discard.
I am very glad that she exists.

If you know of anything else she has advised that may be useful for my situation, please pm me.

She has some great guidelines when it comes to discarding items. Showing gratitude towards it before discarding is a very good one.

My partner started to declutter and he has this (super ugly) orange hat with a pin on it. He said he wanted to keep it because it reminded him of the time he travelled to the USA with his dad. I asked him if he'd wear it ever again, he (thankfully) said no.

We reached a compromise; keep the pin from the hat, and donate the hat. He will still have the memory, but it's attached to a more suitable item. When holding on to items because they spark a joyful memory, think about the other items you have that spark the same one. You don't need a bunch of items for one memory! If you won't display, wear, or use the item anyways, there is no use in keeping it.

Best of luck!

I know this thread has been dead for a while, but I came across it at a weird time.

I love Marie Kondo's method and have used it to clear out a lot of stuff in my life. I'm still working on the complete tidying of my house, but I feel like I'll get there one day, heh.

I've been a member of CS since May of this year. I'm still a baby and there are so many pets that I want! I don't have a wishlist and I don't trade, but I rely on the Pound to get new pets. I treasure everyday pets just as much as event ones, so I'm happy with that. My plan/dream is that once I've been a member for a year, I'll create a group for giveaways and give pets to random newbies. I got a few pets from kind members when I first joined, and I want to give back.

Anyway, ever since I joined I was keeping a list (on listography) of all the pets I got from the pound, what month/year they were born, and if they are a special event pet. This morning, I decided not to keep that list anymore. Well, I was nearly a month behind so it would take a bit of work to catch up, but also I started to realise that it doesn't really matter if they're an event pet or not. They're all special in their own way. I'll go by whether they spark joy (in their species, colour, pattern, etc).

Anyway, I know this is a weirdly random post, but it's a strange coincidence that I happened to find this thread on the same day I was thinking about this stuff. Happy collecting! xx

it's awful that i get so excited about this stuff but here we are. wahhh!
i've just started bingeing her netflix series. i fall asleep to it quite often. it's just so soothing to watch <3 i've spent most of my life bouncing between the system and a bad home life anyway, so there's not much to declutter to start with, but i've just moved to uni across the country and recently discovered i can have all the things i want and oh my ;-; too much stuff. my desk looks like a bomb hit it. it's great and i'm having the time of my life, but the chaos is doing my head in lmao.
