On a scale of 1-10 (10 being loads), how much do you love food?
10. Easily.
What's is your favourite dish and why?
I sort of have two. One that can still be made and one that can't be made anymore.
The one I can still make is my dad's version of saurkraut. It's delicious! Every time it is made, I eat it for every meal until we run out. My lips end up so numb!
The dish I can't make is one of my grandmother's beef stews. Technically, we have the recipe, but the canned beef she used in the past is something we have never been able to find. I think it may be out of production. We've tried substituting, but the beef she used is part of what makes it so good. One day I may find it, but I highly doubt it. I can only just keep tweaking it to try to find something similar, but nothing will ever be like my Mawmaw's stew.
If you could live off one type of cuisine for the rest of your life, what would it be and why?
German. Chinese is a super close second, but German food is something my dad has always made and mixed in with our everyday cooking (since he basically grew up in Germany). I have a lot of family recipes that derive from the ones my dad grew up on, so it's a kind of comfort food.
What was the last thing you ate?
Chinese late last night. We went to a buffet for Christmas, so I ate a bunch of different things.
Name a dish that's a tradition in your country that other's might not know?
Um...American food has some kinds of traditions, but I guess one I can sort of draw in is Currywurst? It's technically German, but we would eat it at my home. Basically, when US soldiers were in Germany, they felt a bit homesick and wanted hotdogs with ketchup, so Germans sort of made their own. It's basically a hotdog (or a sausage) that has a tomato-curry ketchup sauce. We eat it with french fries and dip the fries in the curry sauce, too. It's so good!
Do you cook yourself and if so, what do you enjoy cooking?
Yes, I cook quite a bit. I love baking (and have been baking since elementary school). For meals, I generally like cooking simple things like grilled cheese sandwiches (I add jalapeño peppers when I make them!). They are quick and easy to make, and I usually serve them with either a classic tomato soup or a chile-tomato soup.
Who's your favourite Chef? Cook etc?
I'm a big Gordon Ramsay fan. I watch tons of his shows. Otherwise, I don't watch many food shows/channels.
Do you prefer sweet or savoury foods?
Savoury. I actually can't handle a ton of sweetness. I like it on occassion, but I prefer salty/spicy foods.
Anything else you'd like to ask the group?
Has anybody else had to deal with family members that can't taste? My dad lost his senses of taste and smell when I was little. Of course, this lead to some very interesting meals (especially when he'd try new seasonings). The main thing he can "taste" is spicy food because he can feel the burn of it, so we make tons of spicy foods; however, spicy food does not go with everything. It can be really hard to plan and match foods without having him get bored. We got lucky in that my brother recently started to actually enjoy and eat spicy food, but it makes it difficult to cook when we have guests unless we just keep hot sauces nearby.
