often <3
in seriousness i love love love the intricacies of language dearly (even though i always feel like i fall short in knowing as much as i want to about it, constantly voraciously consuming more knowledge from every corner of the language plateau that i can get it from - colloquial, regional, dialectal, universal, idk you get me??)
language is a direct reflection of the community that uses it, it shapes itself according to function. different communities have their own banks of knowledge, symbols that everyone refers to and is familiar with. to give form to those ideas, words are used to carry one of infinite strains of meaning that concretizes the abstract into like, something the other members understand. yeah.
so like. you learn a lot about a group of people by the kind of words they use, the kind of meanings they have words for, how they construct their sentences, how language is manipulated for humor, how they break or create new grammatical rules to suit whatever particular expression they want to say. insider language versus outsider language...something something...my mind is wandering off lol...point is it's complex and layered and all types of language develop equally and have inherent complexity, and i think thats cool, yeah. i like paying attention to the way people use words and how they communicate coz it tells me a lot
so yeah like. swearing. the vulgarity needed to be able to express an intensity that outstrips the impact offered by more socially sanctioned language. idk i just think its cool that words, which on their own are just strings of sounds or letters we string together, can become a channel for such strong emotion.
when you use these words and the person says them with feeling, they make that choice to break that social filter that protects against causing potential disrespect or offense - the layers of modifying etiquette are stripped off to reveal expression in its rawest, barest form possible. the ugliest, sometimes most poignant, truth. the other person feels the intensity too, and there's the immediate understanding of the gravity of that inner experience that is now shared. immediately. and like. its a Big one. lol.
i mean if the person is really mad or whatever and thats why they're swearing. it can become a very casual staple of particular groups too and if its a norm then the impact is kinda softened if its a norm, but whatever but thats a different thingie. idk what im saying i just like typing today lol. words are tools for meaning, and if you want the other person to know the full extent of the feeling you have inside, swearing is a way of freeing yourself from the restraints you otherwise are conditioned to use to mask your language and soften the blow of what might be a stronger inner experience than the words convey. you know. a tool is defined by its user
i like having reasons to ramble i hope thats okayyyyy
