For me it's more that I see the word as the color... I'm not sure if that's just me but I believe that's how it works for most of us.

agreed. I'm not sure whether or not you have syn, but with colors, you can have syn mildly and just sort of know, I guess, or you can have pretty strong syn and project (project as in projector, not a class project). for this type of syn that is common, (and therefore I'm gonna use as an example^^), if people hear a word or noise they will either project that color (they will actually see the color/s and/or pattern/s, etc. a little ways in front of them, or, more commonly, they will just know it as a fact. Like, you know how anyone can visualize what the country of Russia looks like? It's a fact. Well, to me, the color of Russia is dark, swirly, purples, reds, and black. That's just a fact.
...I hope this wasn't too confusing for anyone cx

I loved the book "mango shaped space" great read, but its short. Is it possible for someone to develop synesthesia? I want to know how, i really wish I had synesthesia. I have a few questions:
What colors/shape/taste/texure are the words, Walter and Jessica?
How does it interfere with life?
Do people bug you about it?
How would you describe seeing it?
Have people never believed you have it?
Also, are there any activities or things that synesthesia really comes in?

walter is kind or like caramel textured, and its kind of a baby blue kind of ivory colour.. its hard to explain
Jessica is lavender, and spikey. funnily enough jess is smooth and yellow
in doesn't really interfere
for the first few months after I was diagnosed with it my friends gave me books to read and I had to tell them what it looked like but its fine now.
my school disnt belive I had it.... those were a painfully awkward six months
miss ------------ this word is to bright it hurts to look at! ----- you do not have synaesthesia stop making excuses!
I can only spell synaesthesia because synaesthesia is a duck egg blue and I remember that colour a lot..
hey!

@ lukas;;
    yeah, you may have a really mild kind of syn. Or maybe you're just a very artistic- minded person. Sometimes it's hard to tell c;

@ Peppercorn.
Yes, that book is quite helpful, but a short read. It's actually how I figured out I had syn c:
To my knowledge, it is not possible to "get" or develop synesthesia, because it's usually genetically passed and it occurs when you are still in embryo. I suppose it maybe could become more evident? But it wouldn't just appear.
As for your other questions, 'Walter' is a dark blueish- grayish- greenish color, with a few little yellow tufts coming off it. It's kind of a flag shape, like a rippled rectangle, and his personality is tall, serious, tired, and solemn. Jessica is a pretty basic purple color, with brown and dark green squiggly edges (like a postage stamp) and has an outgoing, cheerleader- type personality. She is petite and usually pretty friendly.
As for lifestyle: I have pretty good friends who believe that I have it and ask me honest questions about my experiences, without being nosy and bothersome, and I think I am very fortunate in that way. Since I have more mild syn, it doesn't interfere too much with everyday life. The few times I have had actual projections, however, they came as a huge surprise- colors and patterns momentarily appearing out of thin air a few feet in front of me! In general, though, syn can be both a potion and a poison, as they say >.<

@ warriorcats9
    you're synesthesia sounds really pretty!

I don't think it's possible to develop synesthesia past when you're a really little kid and your mind is still developing - of course, no one really knows for sure. Most syn is genetic; I for one know my grandmother has it and my mom has it a little so mine makes sense.

Walter is periwinkle and Jessica is yellow. I wish I could say something cooler than that but I only really associate words/numbers and colors.

It doesn't really affect my life negatively, though sometimes I catch myself spacing out and wondering what color a particular word is if I can't figure it out right away.

No one really bugs me about it, but then again I haven't really had a need to tell anyone so I doubt too many people know I have it.

With my syn I don't see it, I just...sort of know it. For example, the number 3; I see it black (or whatever color it's printed in), the same way you do, I just know it's grassy green. It just.... Is green. It's kind of hard to describe, I'm sorry if my description makes no sense lol

In general people believe that I have synesthesia, yes. When I was a little kid people thought I was just messing around when I told them but that's changed now that I'm older.

I find that syn helps me while I'm trying to memorize stuff, but it's sort of subconscious. I don't actually think, oh, this next paragraph is purple and I have to remember that, but the colors help connect it I guess? I'm not the best at explaining again sorry

Re: synesthesia is a light and creamy green

I came to the realization a few years ago that I see sound. I had always noticed what seemed like static in my field of vision and that it seemed to all but disappear in a power outage. But I had missed until I was much older that there was a pattern that shifted based on the sounds around me. That there was even some colour on occasions. Since it was always there I never focused much on it. It was a leaky roof combined with a potent migraine that filled in the blanks. I could see in mid air the sound of the water dripping into the buckets. It was the same circular ripple you would have seen in the bucket.(think bathtub physics) Again at first it was like the static that was always there, until I let myself just focus on it for a second.

I only think the migraine came into play because while oddly I almost never get a headache with them I do become hyper sensitive to sound and light. So it would have intensified the normal affects.

The static I see is the sound of all the background electronics, like the fridge, fans, etc. when the furnace cuts in there is a shift in the pattern. The same if a fan on the roof at work is out of balance. In that way its actually kind of useful. I have been maintenance on and off for a number of years.

The way I visualize timelines leads me to believe I might have a mild version of time space syn too.

When I hear the word Christmas in my mind, it always sounds like sleigh bells.
I also hear the word's meaning?
Like leaves as a word sounds like leaves in the wind and waves sounds like crashing waves?

Ooh I've heard a lot about that book, but I've yet to read it! I found out I had syn by reading a book as well, only the one I read was called The Name (Title?) Of This Book Is Secret and one of the characters had very, very severe syn. One of my favorite lines is "Mother says not to judge someone by the color of their voice." I hear that struggle. And it is real. Also, synesthesia is genetic through female inheritance. Males can get it, but only through their mother. So mostly it is females that have it.
    - Walter is dark blue and mildly shiny, and also like thick liquid and velcro at the same time? If that makes sense? Jessica is like purple silk.
    - Honestly I just kinda live with it, but there are times when it gets in the way. Like for example, I have to watch black and white lyric videos because if the video is not the same color as the song it really throws me off. It also bugs me when people write names or numbers in the wrong color and things like that. For example, in middle school I always used blue tabs for science, green for english, red for math, etc. because that's what colors the words were. Oh and there's also quite a few words that I absolutely despise because of how they look. Like jot and shelled -shudders-
    - Ummm not really. They're usually either like "Oh I totally understand that" or "uhhhhhhhh okkkk..." but either way they usually just leave it. Occasionally I get teased, but not in a bad way.
    - It's mostly in my head and memories. I have a moderate case, so the colors are clear but projections (actually seeing the colors in front of me) are very rare and usually only happen when something scares the living daylights out of me. Some people have "auras", where my memories of them are tainted by a certain color, like a camera filter kinda. Most of the time I hardly notice it, but that's because I'm used to it. Voices have color as well, and some people have more than one "voice". One thing I've found common in all the syns I know is when someone gets very, very, unreasonably angry, their voice turns black like tar. This is very rare, but happens when you really manage to piss someone off :D
    - Some people don't understand, but no one has called me a liar.
    - Music is by far my most colorful hobby. Voices, instruments, and genres all have a wide variety of color. It's very entertaining, actually c:
