I HAVE A QUESTION!
TYPE OF QUESTION: Math (Algebra)
YOUR QUESTION:I can't, for the life of me, figure out the following problems. I looked up the answer key to check my work and the following problems don't match up with the answers I got. I spent the whole class trying to figure these out, but nada. Any help?

p (q/3 - p)
Use p = -6 and q = -3

I keep getting 42, but the answer key is saying -30.

-3/3 (a + c(b + 5) - (-6 + a))
Use a = 1, b = -6, c = -4

I am getting mixed answers for this one. The answer key says -10.

2 - 8/-2 - 3 - -12/-6 x -2
The answer key is saying 7 and the last time I tried I got -1.

For the second and third it's mostly the signs tripping me up.

[[For the first one, work within the parenthesis first. Start with the division, q/3. -3/3 is -1. Then take -1, and subtract -6. Subtracting a negative number is the same as adding the positive of that number, in other words, -1 + 6. That leaves you with -6(5), which is -30.

-3/3 (a + c(b + 5) - (-6 + a)) | start with the original problem
-1 (1 - 4(-6 + 5) - (-6 +1)) | -3/3 is -1
Work with the innermost parenthesis first, so -1(1 - 4(-1) - (-5))
Remember that in the case of the - (-5), it is actually -1(-5). Continue with the multiplication.
-1(1 + 4 + 5)
-1(5 + 5)
-1(10)
-10

Unfortunately I messed up on the third one; I might try it again later if I get the chance ^^]]

For the second and third it's mostly the signs tripping me up.

Snipping the first two as somebody already helped with those.

First, remember that negative divided or multiplied by negative equals a positive. And negative divided or multiplied by positive equals a negative.
Next remember your order of operations, PEMDAS.

Now.

2 - 8/-2 - 3 - -12/-6 x -2

Let's simplify by doing the multiplication and division first.

8/-2 = -4
-12/-6 x -2 let's break this one up:
-12/-6 = 2 so now we have
2 x -2 = -4

Now we can put those numbers back in our equation and solve the addition and subtraction. Our simplified equation is:

2 - -4 - 3 - -4

Remember, earlier what I said about multiplying negatives and positives together? Let's get a visual of that in our equation where we have conflicting signs. We can consider subtraction as addition if we just multiply the number after it by negative one, like so:

2 + (-1 x -4) - 3 + (-1 x -4)

Now we have some multiplication to do again, so let's do that:

2 + 4 - 3 + 4

Now we can finally solve this to get our answers. I'm gonna do this out part by part:
2 + 4 = 6
->
6 - 3 +4 ->
6 - 3 = 3
->
3 + 4 = 7

Does that make sense?

Thank you! I can't believe silly mistake I made on the first one, aha.
I still have a question though. How did you go from -1(1 - 4(-1) - (-5)) to -1(1 + 4 + 5)? never mind, I've figured it out! Thank you.
