Alright so my sister is kind of commissioning me to make her a mini partial (I say kind of because I'm doing it for free, she just has to buy the materials). This will be my second suit I've made (technically my third head), and the first time making one for someone else. I'm nervous I'll mess it up, but I'm excited to start as I really want more experience. And I'll finally have someone else to go suiting with! I find it looks weird and awkward when you fursuit by yourself, and it's not as fun.

Anyway, the character is a male cat. To bring down the costs it will be mainly fleece/minky, with sparingly on the face, tail, and handpaws.

I've never done a feline before, only wolves. Does anyone have any tips for feline face/foam shapes? I want to make sure it's identifiable as a cat. I will use many references of course, but it will be a learning experience. But I do want to learn to do other animal heads!

Also, do feline handpaws tend to have claws or not? I've seen both. Is there a preference or should I just ask what they want?

Alright, so here's another thing. My last following eyes were made out of foamies. It works.. But they are so fragile, dentable, and squishable. I'm hoping to make something sturdier.. any ideas? Maybe plastic card or dollar store bowls?

We got the fur/fleece today and will be getting the foam soon. I'll post my progress on here when I start.

^I’ve seen some people use these vacuum things they spray and suck up soapy water as you go. Don’t know the name and I’m sorry for my vagueness- my blood sugar is pretty low •^• just know that it’s possible!

I’ve heard of that too, they’re spot cleaner vacuums ^^ Bissel’s little green one is what I see a lot, but I don’t have any personal experience. It’s a nice portable option for cons from what I’ve heard.

good for driving to cons, but definitely not for flying to them. even the smallest ones are quite big. a fursuit takes up a lot of space itself so flying with it would take up even more room.

i have a pretty big green machine myself, kinda a backpack sized one. ive only tried it on my fursuit paws, but it worked really well on those.

Cat fursuits are my specialty! I think the most important factor in getting it to look feline is by far the muzzle shape and size.
Here's an older one of mine, it has a lot of flaws but the muzzle shape turned out well I think:

This one is more recent, I destroyed her though because she was asymmetrical and it really bothered me, the muzzle is still intact though.


This is one I'm currently working on, I do wish I shaped the cheeks more but I've already sewn most of the fur so I can't really turn back unfortunately.

My tips for cat heads are to make the muzzle short and narrow, especially the bottom jaw. Look at lots of pictures of cats as well for reference, and cat fursuits if you can find some good ones! A lot of people make them appear too canine. Another tip is adding whiskers, which I plan to do to that base! It definitely makes it more clear that it's a cat.
I think whether it should have claws or not is really up to your personal preference. Cats can retract their claws, so it can really be either haha

Also, as far as eye material goes, I used foamies for that first one (wouldn't recommend) and the eye plastic in the second one is made of old boxes for cassette tapes that I found and repurposed, it's very strong and I could cut it with scissors but it dulled them. Not sure if it would work for the traditional method of 3D eyes, though. The most recent head's eyes are designed on OnShape and 3D printed, although it kind of made some weird lines on them that are noticable up close.

So I have a miracle for you guys. I work on my suits in my room (because that’s where I’m allowed to create a mess lol) and the floor has carpet.

Now I try to work on a huge cardboard slab I have but faux fur still managed to go EVERYWHERE when I’m cutting- and manages to get around the house. I normally vacuum my room since there’s a lot of it, but if there’s only a small mess, it’s a real pain to have to get the vacuum for such a small spot.

Now, I’ve had this brush- like this sorta

And I was like....what if I brushed the carpet? AND HOLY MOLY IT GOT THE FAUX FUR OUT IN A JIFFY

THIS BRUSH IS SAVING MY LIFE FOR SMALL MESSES- would suggest using one if you have one but I’m not saying to mandatory or anything crazy. Also great for brushing clothes!
Also its bristles are really fine and soft and have been pretty okay for brushing. Still don’t know if that’s the best but feel free to comment!

@Cypherius Those are adorable! Thanks for the tips! I might see if I can make whiskers out of fishing line. I saw some sort of tutorial for that. I hope I can make it look recognizable as a cat. Yeah foamies aren't the best for fursuit eyes, but I found that out too late haha. I might see what material they have at the dollar store (definitely want to go with some sort of plastic).

I made my suit in my room which is carpeted and I did all the fur shaving in there rip ;-; but I have a lint brush from the dollar store that I got for my suit to remove loose fur etc and one time I was sitting on the floor procrastinating as I was supposed to pick up all the mess I made while making my suit, and I was messing around with the lint brush and to my surprise it got the fur out of the carpet! Me and my sisters joked "I haven't seen the carpet in years!" "So that's what color the floor is!" haha.

I'm having a problem deciding if I wanted a dog; cat or snow leopard or hyena fursuit. I'd think to combine them all but i'm not sure how that'd work

Will you be purchasing one from someone, or making it yourself, and if so, will it be the first suit you've ever made?

omg i remember seeing the first version of this thread years ago, but never being able to post bc i was coppa'd! i'm super glad to have found it again, i love fursuits sm

i don't have one right now, but at some point i think my girlfriend and i are going to try making some! but that means i'll have to pick which of my ocs to make and that will be a tough decision lol

When you start making one, I suggest picking a canine character, preferably with a rather simple design. There are many more tutorials out there for canines than any other species and a simple design will help you to get the hang of it. Hope this helps!
