Stupid question that's been irritating me for some time.

Um, you know those pets that like, there is no "pet", but instead, an item?
How does that happen?

I mean, for example, like where it shows a picture of a pet it has instead of a pet, a plushie or something like that.

I would like to make one, but am unsure of how to.
