YOUR QUESTION:bill is twice as old as his brother Dan. In 7 years, Bill will only be one and one half times as old as Dan. How old is Bill now?
Man, I am so tired today, and don't have enough strengths to wrap my mind around this. Somebooody please help ha-ha! I am perfectly capable of doing this, but today is just not my day, and I can't think straight...so yea. Thanks again! This is my fourth time using this thread o.o
Oh my God!! I remember this EXACTTT question on Khan Academy in 7th Grade. ;OOO
I hated Khan- but it WAS a good website. cx
Bill is twice as old as his brother Dan. In 7 years, Bill will be only one and one-half times as old as Dan. How old is Bill now?
----------- ----------
Let Bill's age NOW be "B".
Let Dan's age NOW be "D".
---
Equations:
B = 2D
(B+7)=(3/2)(D+7)
Substitute for B and solve for "D":
(2D+7) = (3/2)(D+7)
Multiply both sides by 2 to get:
4D+14 = 3D + 21
D = 7 (Dan's age NOW)
---
Since B = 2D,
B = 14 (Bill's age NOW)
believe this is correct. o-o

Thank you two for responding, but since I'm confused, I'd like to ask more about this one part:
With -16v=-6 wouldn't you divide by -16 on both sides (it would be a positive answer, I know, but I don't under stand how the number can be more than one considering you're dividing by a smaller number (-6 divided by -16)? Could someone please explain this to me, and again, thank you so much for all your help!
Here's what I did on paper:
-16v=-6
___ __
-16 -16
(cross out -16 on the left) V= ?

Oh yes, didn't I do that?
After you would do that;
v = 6/16 [because the negatives cross out.]
- Oh I did do something wrong! I think? o-o
Then you would simplfy
6 --- 2x3
_______________
16 --- 2x2x2x2
cross out the twos so you would be left with this;
6 --- 3
_______________
16 --- 2x2x2
v = 3/8
Ah there we go! ^-^

TYPE OF QUESTION: Algebra
YOUR QUESTION: 10+v-17v=4 This will probably be my last question for the night c: My main issue occurs when I get to the division, because my answer has to be a whole number or a fraction (or a mixed number). Thanks again for the help! I double checked the equation this time, so it should be correct, xD.
Okay, I know this has been answered before but I'm going to try and explain it some more(??) If that makes sense.
So first you'll combine the terms, ending up with:
10-16v=4
Then you'll subtract 10 from both sides, leaving you with:
-16v = -6
so you'll divide by -16 on both sides:
-6/-16 = v
then simplify: (divide each by two):
-3/-8
so your final answer would be:
v = 3/8
I think this is correct? I think the previous answers were mixed up between the two? Again, I could be wrong so I'd double check

Yes you are correct. C:
@spatklethepanda
When dividing by both sides, it is very simple go just make the answer a fraction, bycstacking the two numbers on top of each other and simplifying it to the lowest possible outcome. C: it is easier than finding a decimal answer. C:
Some people make it hard for themselves by dividing and finding the decimal answer, THEN turning it into a fraction, but that alone is a completely waste of time. C:
