Really, there isn't much you can do except talk to your friend about it. I know it's a hard situation to be in, I was in the same one up until last year.
With the rumours, again there's not much you can do except try and ignore them and if someone ays anything to you about it then just tell them the truth.

With talking to him, think of things you have in common and talk about those things. If you want to go out with him then you will have to find a way to talk to him without being too shy.
If you're too shy to just ask him out, you or one of your friends can invite him to hang out with a group of your friends. It should make both of you more comfortable to be able to talk to the rest of your friends and each other and it'll save things from ever getting too awkward. After that, you can try asking him out just the two of you. If you still have trouble talking to him, you can try doing things that don't involve much talking.
You can also try what DarkAngel suggested, though make sure you choose a friend you trust XD And the Valentine's thing might be a good idea
