Possible Science Fair project?

Since Im long out of school I thought this might work for some of you youngsters;

We decided to try and clean some pennies so mixed vinegar and seasalt in a bowl. Well, what happened wasn't exactly what we expected.

Over the last 24hrs the solution has begun resolving some of the pennies, but did clean others. This penny now has a hole through it, another's rim came off. It might be fun for someone to do a project on why this is happening..
