Are adoptables ocs?

Postby Cinque » Fri Oct 22, 2021 5:45 pm

I’ve had this question since I started collecting characters for my toyhou.se back in March of this year. I keep asking myself: “Is it okay to call this character my oc even if I didn’t design it?”

I’m sure it depends on the artist’s TOS as well, but should characters that someone sells still be credited as the original creator’s character or your own after you purchase them? Should artists be able to have a say on what you do with the design you purchased from them?

There’s so many questions! 😵‍💫

What are y’all’s opinions on this topic?

adoptables that you buy become your ocs. oc means 'own character' meaning, you own that character.

original artists of the designs should always be credited for creating the character, but they no longer own it. you own that character once you buy it, it becomes your property.

As long as you own it, I think it is ok to call it an OC since you add aspects to a character. You should always credit the artist, however.

Yea. I think so, for me My OCS I sell most of them because I just....don't feel them as a character just a drawing. OC's And OS:s can be hard with that. my (OC is original character and OS is origal series) but both can be adopted. you just have to like it (:

It’s definitely okay to call something you received/bought an oc even if you didn’t design the character, the design of course will always be credited to the artist. If someone is selling a character, they are giving the buyer the rights to use the character that they designed which would make it their character. It kind of has to work this way because it wouldn’t make sense to “sell” a character without giving rights to use the character, it would essentially just be buying art of a character you aren’t allowed to do anything with. When someone buys a character, they now own the character. The artwork and effort is what gets credited to the designer.

Hope this helps! ^_^
