Hey, I’m just reaching out for some help, or maybe just to be heard. I “adopted” a stray cat a few months ago. He was not quite fully grown when I acquired him, maybe just shy of a year old. He was actually handed to me by my father in law who found him in the yard wanting to play with the dog (who is a known cat killer) He appeared out of no where and we live pretty far in the country. We asked all surrounding neighbors if he belonged to them and no one claimed him. So I kept him. I live in a very small camper with a resident cat already who was already spayed. I got him neutered within the first week of having him. He is incredibly friendly and energetic. I thought at first it would be great because the cats started getting along and he was fun to have because of what a sweet boy he is. Unfortunately, he has BOUNDLESS energy. He actively swivels his head seeking anything and EVERYTHING to get his paws and nose into. He jumps on stuff, knocks things down, tears thing up, chews everything, and I have done MONTHS of research and tried everything I’ve been advised. He has so many toys everywhere and nothing keeps him occupied for long. He would rather destroy things and tear holes in my walls and chew cords. Spraying cords with unpleasant things like lemon or spice does nothing to deter him. Sticky paws sheets does not stop him from jumping on my counters or clawing my bed and screen door. It’s causing my partner the most grief and stress and we just can’t cope with him in our home anymore. We want to let him back into the yard where we found him. We are on a several acre property with woods on one side and neighboring properties around ours are similar. However, his lack of fear of my in-laws “livestock guardians” that kill everything that moves (even our poultry) and run the property make it to where I don’t want to let him out for fear they’ll get him. It’s been a huge struggle not to give in, I love him but he is so destructive and no amount of effort to keep him entertained helps. I can play with him until he is PANTING and can’t move another step. And he is ready to go 100% again only a few minutes later. He just won’t chill out. No relax, only play. He is definitely over a year old now and I’ve had many cats, he is not a kitten with kitten energy. I think he has cat ADHD and I just don’t have the means to give him the life he deserves. But I don’t want his life to end just because I can’t keep him in my camper. Any suggestions?
