I live in a less populated area so we don't see many strays, but I used to move a lot for work and I've had some interesting experiences with strays

In Mississippi, I was driving with a coworker when we saw an uncollared dalmatian just wandering around. We must have chased that thing all over the place trying to catch it before we gave up and called animal control! (This would have been our first option but we were new to the area and didn't know who to call lol)

In North Carolina, my employers put me and my coworkers up in a building that was next to both a parking lot and a wooded area where a family of stray cats (two adults and three kittens, iirc) lived. I spent a lot of time sitting outside just watching them, until one night when I caught a coyote sneaking up on me while I was distracted by the cute kitties! It was a really beautiful animal, and I'm very glad that I got to see a live one so close up and also didn't get mauled haha!

But by far the best experience I've had with strays was in PR. I've never seen animals act the way they do down there. The pet dogs are so well trained that even in crowded cities I don't think I ever saw a leash, just dogs calmly walking by their owners' sides and stopping when they did-- although I can't say I approve, that always seemed really dangerous to me, especially considering the high volume of animals.
But anyways, the strays there were the nicest I've ever met. There was a little blind dog who lived near where i was staying that the locals called the neighborhood guardian, and he had the biggest underbite! There are whole packs of stray dogs wandering the streets and nobody even looks twice at them. (I once saw a massive pig walking around getting into dumpsters and no one else batted an eye!) The cat colonies are massive and congregate near tourist attractions. If you ever get a chance to visit El Morro castle, do it. It's just cats lounging everywhere, probably in the hundreds considering the size of the place.
And the rescue agencies are incredible! I got the opportunity to work with a few in my time there, some of them run by people who had to do their best with absolutely minuscule amounts of funds but still making it work.
I almost ended up bringing home a pair of stray kittens, and definitely would have if a sudden lodging change hadn't made that impossible.

I'll stop now since I've basically written you a novel (sorry about that!) but I hope you enjoyed hearing about some of the strays I've met. If I haven't bored you yet, I also have a lot of stories about wild animals I've had run ins with, and those tend to be a lot more... well, wild lol
