Postby Nocturnal Creatures » Sat Jul 27, 2019 11:20 am

Okay so there is a general bird forum but I felt that something more specific could be made.

This is gonna be for falconry and the general keeping of birds of prey and owls. Or even just the interest in them wild or otherwise. All are welcome here regardless of what you own/have experience with.

Rules:
- Please do not spread misinformation, if you do not know something leave it to someone else.
- All opinions are welcome but if you are vehemently against it hen please do not be disrespectful as other people may be passionate on the topic.
- Do not seek veterinary advice here unless the advice of are looking for is to see a vet!
- Have fun chatting here, we all like the same thing, the animals.

Why are you interested in birds of prey?: I am a zoology student and when I graduate I want my focus to be on birds, hopefully birds of prey. They are so interesting behaviourally and physically. Just generally awesome.
Any practical experience with them?: A two month internship at a bird of prey centre in the UK.
Favourite species/group?: Caracaras or Bearded Vultures
Give us a fun fact!: There are theories that new world vultures may actually be closely related to storks rather than to other bird of prey (excluding falcons which are more closely related to parrots!)

Why are you interested in birds of prey?:
Have been for a while. But since September 2017 I've been working with them actively on and off and it's been a blessing. I just really love them. They're so diverse.
Any practical experience with them?: -
Yep! Slowly building quite some experience now.
Favourite species/group?: -
My absolute favourite species is the lammergeier/bearded vulture. Vultures as a whole are just amazing, as well as kites.
Give us a fun fact!:
Harris hawks are one of the few raptors who actively work in groups and hunt as a group.
name's alec. legally an adult and thus paying bills. they/them or he/him pronouns have my preference.

Why are you interested in birds of prey?: - I’ve been working at wildlife centers doing various different stuff. I’ve done education, rehabilitation, and working with the educational animal ambassadors
Any practical experience with them?: - Yes, I have experience with both falconry and rehabilitation. I work with the ambassador American kestrel, and I’m currently making him a new pair of jesses and lead if anyone’s interested 👀
In the hospital I mostly work with the owls as I’m on the night shift. (Feeding them, meds, cleaning, etc)
Favourite species/group?: - obviously I live owls, but the falcon family has always had my heart
Give us a fun fact!: - falconry is one of the oldest sports! It dates back over 6000 years, and ancient artifacts and art imply that the same equipment and practices were used.

Also thought I’d mention that legally, we are not allowed to share pictures of the rehabilitation hospital, but I’ll gladly share some stories <3
You’ll just have to picture the animals in your head haha
