Welcome to the official rat thread, where we discuss all things to
do with rats. There are multiple threads to do with rodents where
they may discuss rats too, however this thread is strictly for the
discussion of rats.

Should I buy one, two or three rats?
Rats are social, pack animals and therefore need to be in at least
pairs. Unless you plan on fixing them, get two same-sex rats to
prevent accidental litters. Different sex pairs can live together,
but please consider neutering/spaying them, as they can have
170-240 kits a year!
How large should my cage be?
The minimum cage size for two rats is 72cm x 36cm x 44cm,
however it is recommended to have a larger cage. Additionally,
if you already have a cage, use the rat cage calculator to work
out how many rats it can comfortably accommodate.
Is there any difference between female and male rats?
Males tend, but not always, are calmer than females, who are
more active. Despite this all rats have their own individual
personalities and you may find your female is calmer than a
male.
My rats have bloody eyes - is this normal?
The 'blood' is actually something called porphyrin. Ruby eyed
rats are more likely to have this reddish-substance on their
nose/eyes. Porphyrin is basically the rats tears, and they
typically have this when having a cold, respiratory issues
or their eyes are just dry. Look out for other symptoms,
otherwise it's likely nothing to worry about.

Deac. wrote:No, But the bar spacing is wide so if you have girls or young rats, Or plan on getting females or young rats in the future i do not recommend it.
i don't quite understand the bar spacing as the site i read it on said it was
1.4 x 13.7 cm with a 3mm bar thickness. i checked some customer photos
and reviews, and everyone said it was perfect. regardless, it's quite out o
f my budget, maybe some other options.
