New Horse. Please help?

Postby Soccerlvr » Thu Feb 04, 2010 3:39 pm

Okay, so I'm getting a new horse. My parents gave me the okay just now, and I'm really excited. I haven't really gotten a new horse for a while, other than the fact of my two foals, Kayla and Day.

So my question for you is, what should I get?

Some information on the horses I currently own:

I have two Arabians, Day and Kayla. They are both bay, with light markings. They are about five months now, and are very playful. Their mother doesn't belong to me, but we're keeping her for a little, until the foals get completely used to her not being with them. I also have a pony, named Doc. His breed is unsure, for we rescued him from a horse slaughter home. He was in bad shape, and had no papers, but we took him in and he's living a good life now. He was once in the circus, but then they put him for auction and the slaughterhouse bought him.

Personalities:

Kayla (a female) is a wild, loud type. She is very, very imaptient (we're working on that) and loves to run. Day (male) is more shy, but still full of energy. Doc is a little reserved, and likes to bite. (Signs from slaughterhouse)

What I'm looking for:

Okay, after some comments posted on here (thanks C:) I've decided to edit this section. I'm looking for a horse that's a sturdy one, one who has a bit of endurance. I'm riding in Gymkhana, so a horse who is nimble as well. I usually ride western, and would like a horse 16-19 hands tall. Tempermantwise, I'm hoping for something with a little kick. (no pun intended) xD I want something not so reserved as what I have (Don't worry, I can handle it). I want either black or white (xD contrast) and my parents finally agreed on a price: $10,000 at most. Hum..
Any and all comments will be appreciated C:

Arabians are actually one of my favorite breeds, but if you can find an arabian/friesian cross, those are just wooooonderful horses. The main stud at my best friend's barn is a friesian and they mate him almost exclusively with arabians, and all of the offspring are just amazing.

Thanks :3

I love Arabians, they are very fun horses. I used to go to my friend's ranch before I had horses to ride her Arabian gelding.

Friesians are also awesome, so I'll look into that ^^

Well, considering you're on a budget (if I understood that right?) I wouldn't get to excited about a Friesian or a cross of one for that matter. They're out of this world expensive! However, some rescues are in need of homes :)

You could always look into your local horse rescue associations for a new horse. That way you're helping out a horse in need AND getting a new one ^^

My gelding is a rescue and after almost three years together, he's the most trusting horse I've ever known. Once you form a bond with them, well, you're pretty much attached at the hip :D Good luck in finding a new horse!

Thanks very much Mindy C:

I have been to a few adoption/rescues recently, for my parents want me to see what's there before I do as you said and go buy something very expensive. But, as they just told me earlier, I might be able to get one if we find one with a good tempermant and easy ride.

Not that I have anything against rescues :p That's where I got Doc from. He and I are very close, but he's getting to be a pretty old man nowadays. I will consider what you said as well!

If it were me, I'd go with a either an appaloosa or quarter horse gelding. :D They're usually pretty laid-back breeds, and geldings are always the smartest thing to go with when looking for a riding horse. (Though mares tend to have more personality, geldings don't hold grudges, get mad easily, etc.) Of course, this is just in general, but for the most part, it pretty much describes all the geldings I've met. I do love arabs and thoroughbreds, but they tend to be a bit more high in price. So, that's my two cents. :D
Oh, where do you live? I could do a search on a horse site and maybe find ya somethin'. :)

well, i dont know a Ton about purchasing horses(i never have before  ) but, maybe a ex racer from a rescue would be nice! A SB or TB, they both make good riding mounts, TBs usually have truble picking up the right lead, because they are used to always going left.

i think it's less about the breed and more about what you're looking for, such as do you want a riding horse or just something pretty to look at? if you want to ride, do you want to jump or do dressage (for example)?

I would make a criteria about what you are looking for, for example..

i am after a horse between 16hh and 17.2hh, aged between 3yo to 8yo, colour either pinto, black, palomino or buckskin, mare or stallion, prefer one with potential in jumping and show quality, preferably broken in, under $5,000.

therefore i would not dawdle off this path of what i am seeking and it gives me a fairly clear indication of what i am after.

(i personally hate thoroughbreds and will not own another one (i do not deny there are some beautiful ones out there, both in temper and performance wise) but they are far too common around here (australia) and are worth next to nothing unless competing and winning).

Thanks all :3

I will go to edit the first post Halequin. I hadn't really thought too much on the matter at first, just looking around. Now I know how to fix this up! ^^
