Gonna pop in and try to help with your list from a UK perspective. Burns is one of the better brands you can get over here - it's a smidgen low on the meat content, but it's quality and I've not heard anything bad about it in practice. James Wellbeloved and Arden Grange are also good compared to the rest of the market, although they both use a fair bit of beet pulp so YMMV. Bakers is terrible, mostly sugar and artifical colourings - most things in the supermarket are full of questionable meat, filler and chemicals, but Bakers sticks out in my memory for having major problems with hyperactivity and weight gain. Wagg, Dr John's and Winalot are equally full of idek why you're feeding this to anything - Dr John's had BHT/BHA in it as I recall but I can't find the ingredient list to confirm.

Good food isn't nearly as expensive as it seems when you realise you're giving much bigger portions of cheap food to fill your dog up. Also less poop. Seems to be the best argument to use against people who don't want to spend money to keep their pet healthy.

Glad someone brought this up. I feed both my dogs a mix of Wellness and somedays just cooked bland chicken.

Same as mine. She also often gets scraps and leftovers too. I also know of someone who had two german shepherds and gave them the crappiest, most awful stuff available mixed with bits of old bread, milk and scraps in a disgusting mush - they were the healthiest, strongest dogs! they even rased a litter of healthy, strong pups.

Some dogs just favor that type of food and do okay on it. I would think, though, that your dog can improve with natrual foods. I know dogs that look perfectly healthy on Purina and such, but benefits of natural food outweigh grocery brands.

People have different definitions of "fine". I find vets and show-owners to be idiots in a way because they support Eukanuba, Royal Canin, Iams, etc. There are actually some vet hospitals and kennels that generally feed their pets Natural Balance.

Hey, before dog food, that's what they were fed. If old-world GS's can, so can yours and theirs. (: However, check up on the milk. Dairy products are hard for most dogs to digest. If their dogs can, then shoot, good for them! http://www.dogfoodadvisor.com/dog-feedi ... -products/

My dog did supposedly well on Pedigree, then I switched him to a quality brand and everything improved. A normally healthy looking dog turned into a amazingly healthy looking dog. And many is he a busy body now as well!

And also it could be having a bad effect on the insides without showing it on the outside. It's not worth the risk.

Blue Buffalo is NOT as good as everyone would have you believe. My dog, who eats a max of 1/4th cup of ToTW ate a cup to a cup and a half a day on Blue Buffalo. He powered through that food, and his coat was not nearly as nice and shiny, and he gained like 2lbs, going over his ideal weight. The bag of food started smelling musty very quickly, so I vacuum sealed it into smaller bags in hopes of keeping freshness, which didn't help. I believe I ended up giving the last of the bag to my mum as a top dressing for her dog's food, to encourage her dog to eat(her dog has cancer).

As of late, I've been making "dog soup", which is home made soup stock with various bits of freezerburnt meat and veggies, loads of garlic and rice. My dog gets three tablespoons of this mix once a day, and he's down to maybe 2 tbsps of kibbles a day, with no ill affects. Except his breath, which stinks because of the garlic, LOL.
