HAVE to share my excitement somewhere! ~
Just a little over a year ago, my parents lost one of their beloved dogs (Bandit) due to a significant health issue that wasn’t caught until it was too late. The loss was sudden and unexpected, which hit my family extremely hard especially because Bandit was only 9 years old and had seemingly been in decent health, with the exception of being a tad overweight, otherwise up until that point. While the loss hit everyone hard, it hit no one harder than my mom - Bandit was my mom’s
everything. He was her shadow; quite literally, wherever she went, he went. Ever since his loss, my mom has felt an increasing emptiness by not having her best fur friend in her life; 6 months later she realized she was ready to have another set of furry paws in her life, while she wasn’t sure if she was fully ready to take on a new set permanently she was at least open to the idea of foster care (until the realization came, that more than likely any dog would become a foster fail).
Shortly after realizing she was ready, she reached out to me to not only help her find the right dog for the family but to help her going forward with any new dog since I have professional experience as a dog trainer (as well as some brief experience as a dog groomer) and my partner has worked in the veterinary field. After many hours of doing breed research - including training and grooming requirements, activity levels, individual breed needs, etc; we were finally able to narrow the list down to 10 breeds. We had long discussions about what was the right fit from age to whether they wanted to do a rescue or a breeder, with both my parents expressing concerns about the age of a new potential dog; with my mom stating while she didn’t mind a dog that was a year old, both her and my dad didn’t want to go back down the journey of a puppy especially a young puppy and my dad was open that with the recent loss of Bandit he wasn’t prepared nor ready to go down the journey of a senior dog yet. My mom began her journey to help find the right dog for the family.
There have been many “almost” fits, but up until recently my family had been taking trips to our local shelter to simply just love on all the dogs even if they weren’t the right fit for our family. While there recently, my dad who had been very reserved to the idea of a new dog, not only fell in love with several of the dogs there; but had a puppy steal not only his but my mom’s heart. This puppy was an energetic little fur ball who was only 3 1/2 months old (which was beyond young for what they had initially planned for, but both realized that for the right dog, they were ready and willing to go down that journey again). After the meet and greets went well, and all the paperwork was signed; they officially brought home their newest family addition “Ravioli”.
Ravioli has brought such a bright light back to my family’s home, and to say he’s the “life of the party” is an understatement, in so many ways he has some of the same mannerisms and reminds my family so much of Bandit. He’s a big boy, who is 33 lbs at now officially 4 months old. I get the joy of teaching once again, as well as having the opportunity to help a family (even if it is my own) experience the joy of the journey of not just having a puppy but a dog in their life! I can’t wait to get the opportunity to work with this little fur ball!! ~
