Last snowstorm we got Hazel couldn't play in the snow Bc she was still on strict cage rest orders . But luckily she has been off strict crate rest and was able to play in the snow this time !! She had plenty of fun running around and trying to catch the snow as we were shoveling it !
Edit : hazel gets pretty bad clumping with the snow on her legs . These clumps make it hard for her to walk and are pretty hard to remove- especially because she refuses brushing/ most grooming ( we are still slowly working on this ) .
Does anyone have any good snow pants type things to recommend to help prevent the clumping ?? Hazel is a medium size dog ( 36lbs ) but is much longer than she is tall so I worry it'll be hard to find something that'll fit her properly .

Wow, It's been months since I posted here. We canceled the traveling plans due to my mental illnesses/disorders. I do have some more happy and exciting news though. We've bought land and are looking into LGDs. The breeds we are looking into,
- Anatolian Shepherd Dog
- Central Asian Shepherd
- Great Pyrenees
We're also looking at having more than one breed of LGD on the land, but that's to be decided of course.
I'm also preparing for a service dog prospect in the coming months. I'm either getting a Golden retriever or a Labrador retriever.

@frogandtoad I love Great Pyrenees, they are such sweet dogs!
I definitely recommend a golden retriever too! I own a small dog daycare/boarding facility and Golden’s are much calmer compared to labs who tend to be rambunctious lol! I’ve heard labs do make excellent working dogs though, what do I know? 😂

hahahaha I second this! I walk a 1 year old english lab for a neighbor and he is wild. lovely dog, heaps of fun though would probably benefit from a puppy training class lol
my Beau is settling in really well! he's been walking for a couple of weeks now and he's starting to get more confident with the outside, he's stopping to sit less and responds to commands outside really well already. he doesn't like putting his harness on but he's fine once it's on and yesterday i walked him with just his collar for the first time and he was absolutely fine with it. introducing him to the cat is going slowly but fine, we're going at sonny's pace lol

Anyone have any advice for getting dogs used to wearing coats on walks?
Usually Mungo is alright in the colder months because of his thick wiry fur, but being half chihuahua Midge feels the cold a lot and often ends up shaking like a leaf through most walks in winter. They also refuse to walk in rain of any kind, but I don’t think a coat would help that very much since their heads would still be exposed.
We’ve tried getting them to wear coats before, and they’ll happily wear them indoors without a fuss, but the moment we try walking them in coats they just flat out refuse to walk until the coat is removed. At first we thought it might be restricting their legs, but the coats we have now only have one strap on the underbelly, and they walk around in the house wearing them just fine. They don’t seem to have any qualms about wearing them until they get outside, so we’re not sure why they do this.

Pyrenees and Anatolians are tried and true LGD for sure, but CAS have stolen my heart so being a bit biased I'll say they're the best there is. Certainly not for everyone because of the breed's notoriously aggressive drive but usually thorough socialization and exposure as a *puppy will set the dog up for success as a stable member of your household/farm.
*a puppy from an ethical breeder with stable, conformationally sound dogs who have proven LGDs with consistent temperament.
I have a chocolate lab who is the goofiest thing ever, you will never go to the bathroom alone lmao

absolutely agreed on this one. i have a LOT of CAS patients these days and they absolutely DELIGHTFUL dogs. very very good at their jobs as well.
however, as a 'starter' LGD, working purebred anatolians are relatively easier to find. depending on where you live, usually the situation is kind of like:
- CAS raised mostly for show, dont really do much work-wise aside from guard property by sheer force of intimidation granted by their looks.
-great pyrs make excellent working dogs, but the "market" is overly saturated with byb's and pyr mutts. hard to find a tried and true working pyr.
- anatolians are the perfect balance between the first two breeds. most show anatolians also work and they arent as popular as pyrs so the byb arent as prevalent,
again, it depends on which country you live in, really! good luck on your search <3

Try a onesie/pajama outfit for kids/toddlers and modify for her. I've done this a few times and usually it is cheaper

@Blue_Aussie, Thank you! I'm talking to breeders of both golden and labradors. Then I'll make a decision from there. Either breed could work for my lifestyle and my needs. Now, it's coming down to nick picky stuff 😅
@drift., I just realized you own one! I've been enjoying learning about them.
@houndoom., Wow, thank you for that it actually will help us a lot in deciding which LGD breed to go with! I was noticing the great prys were mainly coming from bybs. Even then many say the breed is a huge hit or miss. My family and I are between the Anatolian and the CAS.
