Hehe. This is Cleo, our new morkie puppy. She's around three months old, loves to nap. A few accidents here and there, but not too many. Knows how to sit, stay and wait.

Cleo's a picky eater, we've gone through three different dry food brands and wet food brands, yet she hardly eats. Does anyone have any food recommendations, specifically for puppies?

offer her food for 10-15 minutes, then take it away no matter how much she ate. Avoid treats for the rest of the day and do this for a while! Lets her know when her food is down, that is her chance. You can offer the food 2-3 times a day

It snowed on Christmas morning, and I was able to get a decent photo of Hazel. We don't get as much
snow as where I used to live so it was a pleasant surprise.

I also have a pup named Hazel ! how cute lol
I'm glad your pup had fun in the snow !

Hazel had some blood work done at the vet the other day, and yesterday the results came back !!!!
All results were NEGATIVE ! Meaning, she is in the clear ! No heart worms !!
She has no more vet trips until 8 months from now, and our wallets can finally breathe lol

She has been doing better about us touching her paws, although we still have a ways to go before we can get to the point of clipping them . I have been also working on teaching her "paw" in small amounts and it seems to be helping a bit, as she doesn't mind offering up her paw for a tasty treat .
She still gets anxious at the sight of nail clippers/grooming clippers/ a brush so we are still taking baby steps there .

She is a terrier/American bulldog mix per her old owners with a pretty high prey drive . She does well with our cats and our rabbits- she only chases if they randomly speed off, and even then with a short "hazel no" she will stop and leave them alone .
However, there is a constant problem with chickens . We own 5 ( used to be more but unfortunate non-hazel-related events befell them ) . Upon an event that is entirely my fault ( dropped her leash to fix something on the coop and a chicken decided to fly over the fence and out of their pen ), hazel attacked one of the chickens . She refused to let go, and I'm gonna be 100% honest, I hit her on top of the head to release the chicken ( hazel remained completely unfazed by this btw, no sore head and no flinching or anything at hand movements- my hand however was bruised for days ) . I did get her to release the chicken and the chicken survived and was mostly uninjured aside from some scrapes and bruises .
I was pretty frustrated after the whole ordeal ( this happened maybe 2ish weeks ago ), mainly at myself because her old owner stated she was bad with chickens and hazel has always shown hyper interest in them . There was no reason I should've dropped the leash to mess with them and i always put hazel indoors before doing anything chicken related now .
It's hard to walk her past the chicken coop because she pulls and wants to stare ( and likely eat ) at the chickens . She does okay when I say "leave it" and give a little tug on the leash . I try not to drag her and to use my body and push her back or away when she refuses to budge and leave them alone .
Any tips on dogs coexisting with chickens ? More so terriers or high prey drive dogs ?
I don't want to feed into her prey drive at all because I fear she might turn on my current small, fluffy pets that she currently coexists with .

( she only has shown this hyper intense behavior with the chickens and my boyfriend's little sister's guinea pigs )

greyhound advice? <3

Postby acura, » Wed Jan 13, 2021 4:33 pm

hi there!

I’m super excited to be able to share this, but my family and I are looking into adopting a retired greyhound; our first ever dog!

I’ve done a lot of research on this breed; I know they’re super calm, sweet, gentle and affectionate dogs. They also have that lazy side to them and tend to snooze a bunch! But I would like to know if you guys have any tips or advice before we should go ahead and adopt a greyhound? I know they need multiple beds, coats and such to keep them warm, raised dog bowls and mostly the mandatory things when it comes to adopting a greyhound. The things I mainly want to know is their behaviour, temperament and how they do in specific situations?

We’re quite a busy family; my parents are full time workers and I have school, same with my siblings. We tend to be out of the house for 6-8 hours each week day. So I just want to know if this is an alright amount of time to be away from a greyhound if it’s given stimulation and activities to do at home? I’d be waking up early in the mornings to give it a nice long walk before we leave it for the day, and for a nice walk when we get back as well. I’ve heard that greys tend to have separation anxiety, which is one of my main concerns as there’s no way to go around the 6-8 hours we’re out of the house. I’d also like to know if greyhounds are dogs which are okay with a lot of affection, pats and so on? I have anxiety and being around animals and being able to pat dogs really helps me cope with it, and I’m afraid that I’ll ‘over love’ a greyhound and it’ll get mad at me or dislike me for it? I get super attached to dogs and love being around them/patting them as well. Sorry if it sounds stupid! It’s just something I’ve really been thinking about.

Any advice is helpful as I really want to be able to confirm that a greyhound would be the right dog for my family and I! Thank you so much <3

Hi there! I don't own a greyhound, but I did a little bit of digging and there is a great website called "Recycled Racers" and they have a FAQ page that is really important to look at. I know that greyhounds are super nervous animals, especially retired greyhounds. My friend's family has one and she's really sweet but a very skittish dog. I'm not sure if you're going to have an empty house for 6-8 hours a day if a greyhound would be good for you. Leaving any animal alone for that long isn't great. Someone would need to take multiple weeks off to be able to acclimate the dog to the home.

    Hope this helps!
