@repaugnant
I also have a pup named Hazel ! how cute lol
I'm glad your pup had fun in the snow !
Hazel had some blood work done at the vet the other day, and yesterday the results came back !!!!
All results were NEGATIVE ! Meaning, she is in the clear ! No heart worms !!
She has no more vet trips until 8 months from now, and our wallets can finally breathe lol
She has been doing better about us touching her paws, although we still have a ways to go before we can get to the point of clipping them . I have been also working on teaching her "paw" in small amounts and it seems to be helping a bit, as she doesn't mind offering up her paw for a tasty treat .
She still gets anxious at the sight of nail clippers/grooming clippers/ a brush so we are still taking baby steps there .
She is a terrier/American bulldog mix per her old owners with a pretty high prey drive . She does well with our cats and our rabbits- she only chases if they randomly speed off, and even then with a short "hazel no" she will stop and leave them alone .
However, there is a constant problem with chickens . We own 5 ( used to be more but unfortunate non-hazel-related events befell them ) . Upon an event that is entirely my fault ( dropped her leash to fix something on the coop and a chicken decided to fly over the fence and out of their pen ), hazel attacked one of the chickens . She refused to let go, and I'm gonna be 100% honest, I hit her on top of the head to release the chicken ( hazel remained completely unfazed by this btw, no sore head and no flinching or anything at hand movements- my hand however was bruised for days ) . I did get her to release the chicken and the chicken survived and was mostly uninjured aside from some scrapes and bruises .
I was pretty frustrated after the whole ordeal ( this happened maybe 2ish weeks ago ), mainly at myself because her old owner stated she was bad with chickens and hazel has always shown hyper interest in them . There was no reason I should've dropped the leash to mess with them and i always put hazel indoors before doing anything chicken related now .
It's hard to walk her past the chicken coop because she pulls and wants to stare ( and likely eat ) at the chickens . She does okay when I say "leave it" and give a little tug on the leash . I try not to drag her and to use my body and push her back or away when she refuses to budge and leave them alone .
Any tips on dogs coexisting with chickens ? More so terriers or high prey drive dogs ?
I don't want to feed into her prey drive at all because I fear she might turn on my current small, fluffy pets that she currently coexists with .
( she only has shown this hyper intense behavior with the chickens and my boyfriend's little sister's guinea pigs )
