Blue_Aussie wrote:^Thanks but a retractable leash won't work for me, my 1 and a half year old niece hikes with us and Mazie likes to weave around us so I need her on a short leash so she can't trip her..
I would suggest working on leash manners while doing hikes. It seems the amount of distraction is more interesting than you if she's pulling etc but not when you do normal walks. gentle leaders are good tools but won't necessarily fix the issue if you ever want to stop using one. I would prefer a harness with hiking. Keep working on what is being taught in your training classes when on hikes or even just taking her to areas like a hike to mimic it and redirect her when she starts pulling etc. That would honestly be the main way of fixing the issue overall without buying a bunch of different types of leads etc. Investing in a long lead and working on leash manners/loose walking is probably the best fix to your issue.

I have a question for everyone here. I’m potentially taking in a rescue, a 5 month old male. My family usually avoids males because of the whole marking issue. We will be sure to neuter him at 6 months, and all of our pets are fixed, and we haven’t had a male around in years so I assume the scent isn’t there. Do you think marking will be an issue? If so, how could we help with that?

markings is dependent on the dog. Also if its discouraged and stopped at the beginning it won't be an issue. I have a 5yo intact boy who knows not to lift his leg inside. if he's gonna be a bigger dog, I would wait until at least a year if you can for altering but being he's a rescue that's probably out of your hands. though he may never mark to begin with. If he does, definitely use a enzyme cleaner whenever he has accidents anywhere to prevent the issue from starting.

I second that marking is dependent on the dog and the situation. My dog was neutered when he was picked up as a stray around 2 years of age. We haven't had any issues with marking in the house and he lived in a foster home with four dogs successfully, but on one occasion when we were at a friend's house he did mark in the house when their dog was being too forward with him and he started getting uncomfortable.
If he does mark or otherwise pee in the house, eleutheromania had a great suggestion about enzyme cleaner! That will help discourage him from peeing in the same spot, but if marking does become an issue, a belly band is an option as well. This will help discourage marking behaviors/inappropriate peeing in the house.

I have a small standard loonghair chocolate and tan dachshund (Loki), a American eskimo dog(Kasper), and a Beagle(Piper). Getting a standard poodle in the near future.
