So I just got my first dog. I paid for him, and I'm training him. He's about six years old, which is a bit older than what I was looking for, but I'm of the belief that no dog is too old to learn new tricks. He's a Schiller Hound, a breed that originated in Sweden. I rescued him from a local shelter - he was taken in due to abuse and neglect. His name is Hamlet, and sadly his brothers Othello and Macbeth were already adopted so we couldn't have the full anthology.
We're very excited to welcome him into our home, and I'm looking forward to giving him the best life I can.

Congratulations, and thank you for rescuing and supporting your local shelter!

I've never heard of a Schiller hound before, had to look that up. Feel free to share pictures of your new boy. My girl Chloe was six when I adopted her which was a year older then what my mother wanted, lol. She's twelve now.
Love the naming there, and lol on the anthology joke.

Im actually taking my 5mo berner girl to a small community event today to work with her in bigger crowds! She regularly goes to my mother's family resource center and is often around medium-sized groups of people so this should be like a medium-sized step up, I hope she does ok!

Hope y'all don't mind me poking in really quick. Does anyone here work with animals as well? I suffered a really traumatic dog bite a month ago & was retraumatized by another bite Saturday & am having trouble even looking at my own dogs. I need to figure out how to get over this sooner than later. It's been a month and these ptsd-esque symptoms are just now popping up. Any advice would be so welcome. Even just hearing dogs bark has been making my chest tight.
In other, more on topic, news... Barnaby turned a year old today!

He's looking a little rough but it's because I haven't had a chance to get him his next borde shot so he can go be properly groomed lol. I know.. his grinch feet are out of control!

The best thing about my aunt being a breeder?
Constant puppy pictures and updates on her dogs!
Her first GSD, Sasha, just had her last litter and will be spayed once the puppies are weaned. The vet estimated 7-8 puppies this litter. She ended up having 11! Two passed, which is unfortunately common in a litter that size. :(
Sasha and Alexis are her only dogs that have had puppies, Cymber and Alana not reaching 3 years yet. She has a male that has a good work drive but isn’t insane like the last male she had. He’s starting with bite work and also starting off with his FCAT runs in the next event near my aunt.
She just recently received the titles in the mail for her dogs, Cymber and Alana.
Cymber is number 11 on the FCAT results for GSD in 2019!

Hello, I used to work with animals! I've also had that happen to me, and for me it just took a bit of time. I think it was about a month after I started freaking out I was back to normal, and everyone is different. I would say don't push yourself too much to get over it, stress can exacerbate that trauma, and it would also be good to talk to someone about your fear when it pops up. Also, ground yourself when you start to get anxious with your dogs. Like, think about how long you've known them, how you spent all that time training them and learning their personalities, and how they're real good dogs. It might not make it go away, but doing that helped me a bit when I had trouble. I hope you feel better soon!
And Barnaby is so cute! He is absolutely rocking the hairy grinch feet look. Tell him I said happy birthday

Alright guys, I've had a doozy of a day and everything I thought I knew about dog food is shattered. I used to use Dog Food Advisor as a resource but I've recently been told by my vet that rating site's like that one can be very misleading/go off of marketing myths. I had never heard of WSAVA certified, or the difference between AAFCO and WSAVA certifications, or the discussion of DCM and grain-free. I've also been introduced to tufts(
https://vetnutrition.tufts.edu). Ha, my head is spinning, why is nutrition so complicated. ಠ_ಠ Anyways lesson learned - never stop researching, my gosh, and just consult an actual vet if you have any questions.
Anyways, I have a four year old Chow Chow who has always had allergy problems. It started as itchy paws, but as the years have gone by it's worsened to the point of scratching everywhere to the point of scabs. (He also gets infrequent ear infections too.) I've done different elimination diets in the past, have tried every kind of anti-itch shampoo, hot-spot spray, and allergy/Omega bite to no avail. My last vet started him on Cytopoint shots, which has helped tremendously, but he still has an underlying itch issue.
The point of my earlier comment was because my new vet recommended Purina Pro Plan Sensitive Skin. The whole reason for this post I guess was that I'm just surprised because it goes against my previous understanding of dog's dietary discussion, and wouldn't have imagined Purina as possibly the best option for his condition. But, I trust my vet, am happy to have learned something, and hope his new food works for him!
