so.. i have recently fell in love with siberian huskies. i contacted a local breeder who is going to breed her female next month. i am hoping to get a puppy from her litter. i was wondering what are some essentials you think a husky would need? it will get a lot of exercise. i have never owned one before but will be doing lots of research prior to getting one! also some things i should watch out for about the breed? i know they’re extremely high energy and stubborn and independent.

Necessities:

- A durable long line
- Ideally a fenced in yard
- Dog friends (as they can and will be very dominant)

Some things to watch out for:

-Shedding. They shed all but 3 months of the year. You will need a durable grooming rake or brush of some kind.
- If you live in a hotter climate, they tend to overheat.
- They will take off. Training is needed and I do not recommend taking them off a long line until they are older and more matured and trained. (E collar may be needed at a older age)
- I recommend a harness over a collar because they can and will slip out of things.
- They are sneaky and very vocal. They will steal food from your plate without you even noticing.
- The will run for miles and miles. I recommend getting into urban mushing of some sort.
- I have found, through owning my own husky mixes and training purebreds for others, they live off of "no". If you don't punish in some way, they think it is ok always. By punishing I don't mean hitting or anything like that. Whatever the dog considers a punishment. If you let them get away with it once, it takes a lot longer to train it out.
- They are whiny, impatient, and back talk.
- A durable kennel for when you are not at home will be your best friend as they like to get into things when unsupervised.

Before any hate is given, keep in mind this is through personal experience and a majority of the things listed can be trained through.

She's beautiful! She looks a bit like my Clementine. Looks just like a little BMD. <3

Maybe a bit of Miniature Pinscher or some sort of Shepherd? I'm not good with guessing dog breeds.

@schistad I’ve only owned one personal dog, but my family has owned many over the years. We’ve never owned purebred huskies, only mixes, but I’ve found that they are better off if they are put to work. Whether it’s mushing, being a guard dog of some sort or sporting.

thanks everyone for the husky advice. i plan on doing urban mushing and going on lots of hikes and showing the dog.

also another question on my current rescue dog. hes a TERROR. hes a labrador (people will argue hes a mix cus he doesnt look like the standard but based on the papers we were given hes purebred). anywho.. he chews up everything. im assuming his old owners tied him up outside or something. is there a way to make him stop? he gets into the trash and finds things to chew up. he has toys. we had been giving him benebones which was working well and he never chewed up anything. turns out those are toxic for dogs and made bear get extremely sick to the point we honestly thought he was going to die. is there anything else we can do to keep him safe and out of things?? ive thought about baby gates or bully sticks but is that the only option? im afraid our other dog may fight him over the bully sticks. and crating is not an option otherwise we would have done it.
