I would say every fish tank needs a filter!

How many fish tanks do you have: none yet qwq
Types of fish that you have: n/a
Your fishs' names: n/a
How long have you had fish: i've owned fish when i was younger, but i haven't really been into them until just recently qwq

so i'm planning on getting a couple fishy friends soon!! i know i want a couple colorful babs; does anyone have any suggestions for types? :0

What size tank do you plan on getting? That will largely determine what type of fish you can get.

How small is small?
All fish need a filter and bettas also need a heater since they need their water at a stable 78° and 80° F (25.5° and 26.5 C).
You might want to look up cycling. All fish need a cycled tank c: You can read about doing a fish in cycle here: http://www.aquariumadvice.com/forums/f1 ... 76446.html

Okay, i've got questions regarding 'cycling' your tank before putting fish in, and filters. Specifically for bettas.
So im aiming for between a 5-8 gallon now, maybe more, but not much more than 8. What exactly is cycling? and how is it done? Also filters. I know bettas need a low flow because they arent great swimmers, and live in low to no flow places. I've read about the filter needing to break down ammonia and nitrates from their waste. How will I know if a filter does that? hhh sorry if these are dumb questions, i've never owned a fish before.

Can anyone give me some tips for a betta sorority tank? I plan on having around 3 female bettas, a snail and maybe a frog. If any of this shouldn't be together, Can anyone give me better replacements for a sorority tank? qwq

Fish waste produces ammonia which is harmful to fish. Then a bacteria grows that turns the ammonia into nitrite which is also harmful to fish. With the presence of nitrite another bacteria grows that turns nitrite into nitrate which is much less harmful and is removed by water changes. This is the nitrogen cycle c: In the simplest form, to cycle a tank all you have to do is add a source of ammonia and wait. There's a more in depth explanation here and a calculator for adding the ammonia: https://www.fishkeeping.co.uk/articles_ ... rticle.htm
The ammonia and nitrite eating bacteria grow all over your tank, on all surfaces but they like it best in places with constant running water like your filter. All filters will deal with ammonia and nitrite for you when they're cycled.
Sponge filters are often good for bettas because they're very gentle but you can always get a HOB filter with an adjustable flow. Then you can keep it turned down or point it to a wall and it shouldn't bother your betta much. Or if you have a particularly strong flow you can make a baffle.

What size is your tank?
Sororities generally aren't a good idea and can have a high failure rate. You could have a group together for ages and wake up one day to a massacre. It's up to you if you want to attempt it but make sure you have a backup plan in case it doesn't work.
You need a tank of at least 20 gallons, the bigger the tank the less likely they'll fight. 3 is a bit small for a sorority, aim for 5-7 at least and try to get them all at the same time ideally from the same spawn. A bigger group means any aggression will be spread out.
You want a heavily planted or decorated tank with lots of places to hide and breaks in line of sight.
You'll have to watch for aggressive ones and remove them if required.

It depends on the frog but african dwarf frogs are best kept in species only tanks. You can keep them with fish but they have poor eyesight and tend to be slower than fish so you'll need to make sure they get food. They can nip fish with long fins or could be bullied by aggressive ones.
And they're social and tend to do best in groups of at least 3.

How many fish tanks do you have: i think the original tank is still in the garden shed somewhere, can't rememember how much it was
Types of fish that you have: platy
Your fish's names: flipper, flopper and scamp
How long have you had fish: i got them when i was around 4, flipper and flopper died when iwas 5, scamp lived on till i was 6 before dying of white spot.

i have a few terribly crappy drawings i did when i was like 5 of them, but otherwise no

in case you're wondering why i posted here seeing as my fish are all dead, i'm interested in getting more and possibly getting a *small* coral reef tank.

Dang. I never knew about the failure rate of sororities, I was gonna get a 25 gallon but if there's a chance that they'll all kill each other I wouldn't be able to deal with it. and yeah sorry I meant to type african dwarf frog since I heard they were cool with bettas.
I think I will get a snail tank. Just a few snails, Probably ones that can't breed in specific waters xd mainly because I'm still heartbroken bc my betta was a bit more aggressive to other animals than we thought, he's a total sweetheart with me but he murdered his snail brother within a day.
Thank you so much! I would've bought 300$ worth of stuff for a sorority. You really saved me and my parents wallets ^^
