however, it is illegal in most states to own a wolf, no matter how badly we want to. (eventually I will get a permit to own one)
There is a good reason for that. A wolf deserves its freedom, miles and acres to roam, deer and moose to hunt.
Not processed dog food (that is usually sawdust and horsemeat, stuff you wouldn't even eat) and being cooped up in a small back yard. You cant train a wolf like you can a dog; they still have all their natural instincts at the surface, whereas dog's instincts are buried deep from hundreds of thousands of years of breeding. A husky dog is the closest to the wolf, and in my opinion, are one of the craziest dogs to own, and the most difficult. (I have owned 2 in my life. One of them snapped a bird mid air while we were on a walk. The other killed my cats.)
Pet wolves and wolf hybrids also have a tendency to bite small children, sometimes just a nip, sometimes more serious. Small children act and behave like prey, and you cant teach a wolf to not hunt its prey, its just in its nature. They will also sometimes kill another family pet, such as the cat, or the small min pin you thought would be ok. (I have seen so many cases of wolves and wolf hybrids online being put up for adoption or being put down just for that reason.) They don't belong in a household. Period. Just like you wouldn't keep a pet tiger as a housecat, a wolf is not a dog.
As for petting a wolf, there are programs out west that have wolf ambassadors, that let you go in with the wolf and see and pet them. (I saw it with Steve Irwin and his daughter, well, at least they did it). I saw one a few years back that let you camp out in their paddock for a week, to fully immerse yourself in their life.
I am all for the controlled hunting of wolves, if it is exactly that, controlled. No radio collars, no helicopters, no horses, and no packs of dogs to chase a wolf down. It should be you vs. the wolf, and if you happen to catch one in their territory in the land they know best, then good to you, you deserve the kill. However, if you use a helicopter to find the wolves, to shoot from the sky, Or use a pack of dogs to hunt the wolf down for you while you ride behind on an ATV, shame on you. You have an unfair advantage.
I don't hunt, but I live in Maryland where coyotes are just now starting to appear. Maryland and Delaware are the last two US states to get coyotes. My senior project was to prove that Coyotes were in my county. I was in the newspaper when I got coyote scat on a US Navy Base and got pictures on a trial camera. My article is in a scientific journal that is about to be published.
I told the teacher to that classs to let me know if they got a coyote in. I already gave them 2 grey foxes. I am just waiting for the ok and I will go up and skin them whit the class. Then I will send the skins off to get tanned.Note, that I dinot hunt any of these animals, but they were roadkills that I found in or near my neighborhood.
