Okay. So Diablo didn’t fit his personality. We changed it to Rambo.

Me too! I’ve had two others that I got from big chain pet stores - Rambo is not from a big chain pet store(and everything for him costs over 500 USD. ouch.) but he was worth it.

He’s got a better tank setup then my others ever did (my boyfriend helped out a lot with rambos tank).

ooo i'd love to but my mom's afraid of snakes lmao

oh and also: im a bit hesitant on getting a leopard gecko because of the feeder insects. Im not afraid of the insects at all, i just dont want any to escape and run around the house (and jumpscare me). and im in canada, so dubia roaches are illegal - otherwise they'd be my first choice. I'm thinking crickets would work, and also mealworms. But for mealworms, im kinda confused. If you're breeding them at home (which is recommended, right???), then wouldnt some grow to be giant beetles? And what would you do with those beetles, considering geckos cant eat something that big? Helppppp

I've had those same concerns as you have. I started with crickets because they're supposed to be healthier but I live in an apartment. If you do get crickets, don't just place them in the cricket box! A box shouldn't have tubes (crickets die fast and tubes make that process faster. I hated getting a different cricket tank) and I put mine in a clear tote (to clarify, the tank of crickets in a clear tote). It catches any of the ones that jump out of the original tank so they don't wander around the apartment.

But I hate crickets and switched to mealworms. They are easier to care for. I don't breed them i just buy them from the pet store. I feed them the insect food a day before gecko feeding to make sure the nutrients fully absorbed by the bugs. I keep them out near the tank and buy small mwalworms. Feeding the largest ones to my gecko first, I've only had one turn into a beetle before I finished the box.

If really concerned about it then I found it helpful to out in the fridge. I put mine in the door with a little cardboard surround it just in case they escaped. They never did but it was for my piece of mind. Ot put them in the butter holder part of the fridge.

In my experience those who breed mealworms that have beetles have a lot of different insect eaters, sell them, or grind them up for compost. That's just my experience. Kudos to all those who do breed them! My landlord would kill me if I tried that.

I hope this helps. Please note this is only my experience with them and not any sort of professional advice. I have a 1.5 year old leopard gecko I've had since she was little.

I already have a community beetle tank for death feigning beetles and random darkling beetles I sometimes find outside, so I just dumped my mealworms in there lol. They breed by themselves, I feed the worms to my gecko, and the little beetles add some spice to the tank. But otherwise you should be fine just buying them in a cup from the store and feeding the biggest/oldest ones to your reptile. You can feed the pupa as well as long as your gecko doesn't need movement to invoke a feeding response (mine will bite anything I put in tongs, even if it isn't moving). Mealworm beetles are tiny, but you don't feed them because they are bitter and mostly tough exoskeleton. Superworm beetles are huge, though (and super nice for my beetle tank lol).

I hate crickets. No matter what I do, I can't keep them alive. And if I do keep them alive, they make noise at night and they smell so bad. I've tried black soldier fly larvae and they're pretty easy, but they're small and don't really move around much. If you get an adult, feed it before its wings dry and straighten and your gecko will love it. Same goes for waxworms.
