pippin. wrote:So, we are getting a puppy in probably less than 10 days (not sure yet!). I've posted here recently in regards to my 6yr old Jack Russel x Chihuahua cross (he's epileptic). Anywho, we're finally getting him a friend. We are getting a male micro chihuahua from a local family
.
Pippin (6 yrs old) knows how to 'Sit' and 'Say ______' (He barks the syllables). So, I've bought a clicker and it is coming in the mail (hopefully before the puppy comes!). Just wondering if I could train the older and younger dog together, and then hopefully they can learn together?
Yes, you can, but you'll likely need to start with them separately. You need to charge the clicker with each of them, teach them no mugging, and make sure and work on them being calm in the presence of each other and food in general. Here are some videos that may help you out...

@Shane Dawson - I think that's a great picture. That's a serious runway model face.
Ahah sometimes he actually does runaway and end up broken.

Dog fence is a go! It'll be so nice to just put them in here while I do yard work and not have to micro-manage them. Don't get me wrong, they dont bolt off the property or anything and they know the boundries... but not having to scold Sentry for harrassing the chickens.. or fishing in the trash.. or eating /stuff/ will be so nice when I can get stuff done on beautiful days without them crated in the house or constantly being watched.

If the weather holds out we're hoping to finish it tomorrow. Its 30ft by 30ft. Not huge, but larger and far less expensive than a 10x10 market dog kennel.
Honey, it's in the stars
And you're my everything from here to Mars
And every word I say I truly mean
Dear darling, I hope I'm being clear
'Cause there's no one like you on earth
That can be my universe

That said, I have an aussie who needs a playmate, and we are not getting another dog (oh but I will beg for one). That said, any ideas to entertain Cricket? She really has no toys and we are afraid she tears the house to pieces out of boredom while we are gone, since she has never been an "only child".
My deepest condolences on your loss.
First in regards to Cricket I would strongly recommend you start alone training immediately to get her used to being alone.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGxhcb-itO4Before you leave here give her a lot of exercise to tire her out, as the adage goes...A tired dog is a good dog.
Why doesn't she have toys? Puzzle toys like stuffed Kongs, wobblers and chewies (provided you can safely leave her alone with them) are a great way to entertain her when you leave.
You could also consider doggie daycare if she misses having a canine playmate. You could also hire a dog walker to visit during the day.
Also if needed you could always confine her to a dog safe area (or a crate) to keep her from destroying things out of boredom/stress.
Also here's a video on separation anxiety so you know what to look out for in case she does show signs of SA.

She has no toys because she shredded her cong, ate the treat, and then ate the shredded pieces a month ago, and the other toys met similar fates.. She actually is doing pretty good, so I do not think she needs anything to do. She is 9, so she is winding down now, and toys do not interest her as much. Molly was the one with separation anxiety. She barked and barked when we left. And then she would take out the trash. We kenneled her until she was too old and got sore from sitting still all day, and from then on she just got to roam the house.

Wow, those are some powerful jaws, did you try the black kongs for the strong chewers?
I'm glad she's doing well on her own.
Anyone ever shower with their dog? I decided to try it with Chloe tonight in the hopes of saving some energy. It was...interesting. She tried to make a break for it out of the shower, lol. But she did let me pick her up and hold her closer to the shower head. I was trying to get the soap out of her crest and it worked well and she seemed to tolerate it better then using the sprayer (
you know what I mean I can't think of the word) close to the back of her head.
After she was done I had a dog bed ready for her with her microfiber towel and patted her dry and tried to wrap her up before giving her the kong I'd stuffed. She wouldn't eat the kong, trying to bury it instead *sigh*. And then she proceeded to cry while I took my shower. All in all it didn't go badly though I don't think I'd care to make a habit of it either. Good in a pinch but I don't feel either of us are as clean as we'd be if we'd had separate showers.
