You're correct about the substrate thing, as of now it's just a bare bottom tank but I hope to get some sand soon(:

LOVE your albino! So pretty <3

They can get impacted by sand lol thats what I meant in my above post. So either nothing on the bottom or substrates too large for them to fit in their mouths like large rocks or maybe marbles. ovo
Here is a discussion about it: http://www.reptileforums.co.uk/forums/a ... -sand.html
Personally I wouldn't use sand, just in case and especially if you don't use tongs to feed them.

Yes pacmans are incredible you can feed them earthworms, crickets, dubias, and even mice and small birds as a once in awhile snack. You can't have them on a primary diet of mice/birds due to there being too much fat in them for the frog. And they need to be big enough. As of now my three can eat baby f/t pinky mice. n.n

I've never heard of them being impacted by sand, but thank you for telling me! I actually almost bought some today but thank god I didn't(: My little guy doesn't understand how a bowl works so i have to just put the blood worms on the ground xD

It's so cool that they eat those things.. You would think it would be the other way around hahah

Glad that I can pass on some knowledge! It might save the lil ones life. c: Impaction is scary because you often don't see it until it is too late. </3 It is quite common in geckos such as leopard geckos. What do you mean by put it on the ground? Axolotls are aquatic? Do you just mean the bottom of the tank lol?

I'm sure that pacs could get eaten by mice and birds in the wild. That's why I only feed frozen thawed mice. ovo Live food can cause really bad injuries (well pinkies would be fine since they are so tiny but anything bigger than that that is aware could seriously harm them).

hello! i have sand in my 50 gallon lotl tank that has three axolotls, they tend to do fine from my experience. but then again i do hand feed them with tongs, and or with my hand that is free of chemicals on it. c:
i've never heard of the sand being bad for them, because if they do injest some it is small enough to pass.

For axolotls could you get 2 in/5 cm diameter rocks for substrate? Big enough not to get eaten, if you're worried about them eating sand. I'm guessing it would be bad if they accidentally swallowed a huge chunk. Partly curious too. Would rocks that big work?

Yeah they would work... but food and poop and mess would just get stuck under them, I doubt it's really worth it. I would just do bare bottom if I were you.. It's not the most pleasing but unless you're willing to clean a lot it would do.(:

Saying again;; I have sand lol but its easy to get the poops out because I use a turkey baster and it sucks it right up easily without taking anything up! If you use larger rocks it may be more of a task but it's possible.

Geckos and turtles are reptiles, not amphibians.
