If you're having trouble with getting her to lift her paw up try laying your hand flat on the floor with a treat hidden under it and give her the treat the moment her paw comes up off the ground to paw your hand. Once she's lifting her paw reliably to paw your hand for the treat raise your hand up a little off the ground with the treat still hidden in your hand and reward the moment she paws you. Once she gets good at that you can move to keeping the treat in your other hand and asking for a 'shake'.

Hmm, sounds good. I'll give that a try and see how she gets on. c:

JamesonTheFox wrote:He's not going to be a puppy. He's a 2 year old English Pointer that was returned to the breeder because he "wouldn't listen". The breeder said though his original owners most likely hit him and used a shock collar inappropriately on him. He lived in an outside kennel his whole life and he's not house trained, leash trained or anything. He doesn't even have a name beyond "dog".
Pointers are big people pleasers though so I think I'll have him turned around in a matter of weeks.
My GSH Scholtz passed on earlier this year aswell. -.-
I'm terribly found of Hound and Pointing breeds though. That's all I have and all I ever plan to have. XD
See I'm not a hound person at all.

I'm more of a herding type person myself, although I do enjoy a good bird dog. I imagine you'll have no trouble turning your new pointer around as you're right they definitely are people pleasers! lol Any ideas on what you're going to name him?
Very sorry to hear about your loss.

I never got into the herding type myself though I appreciate Border Collies. So dang smart. Our neighbor doesn't exercise hers enough so he nips at heels trying to herd people all the time.
I'm naming him Towser after the hound on 101 Dalmations. He has the same long brown ears as that dog + I've been wanting to use that name for a while. I'm going to end up spelling it Taozer though since I'm weird like that XD

I have an aussie and she can be a hellion when she doesn't get enough exercise, so I understand where you're coming from with your neighbors BC. I do try and get Cara on sheep as often as I can though and she gets a good run everyday as well as lots of training! I had a beagle briefly and that's when I discovered I could not handle hounds at all...she was lower energy than Cara, but it was a whole different kind of energy that I couldn't handle.
I like the name you have picked out for him!

What kind of birds are you getting him for?
