Imzadi83 wrote:^ that was very helpful Cardinal thank you. Do your dog feel full? It would be quite an adjustment guilt wise feeding such a little amount. Not that I wouldn't as I know it's better for them but it would/will be a huge adjustment that's all. Kind of like those sci-fi shows where people get all their nutrition from a little cube or something.

I KNOW! I'm one of those sympathetic feeders. D: "SHE'S STARVING! FEED HER MOOAARR!!" But, honestly, switching to a higher quality food my dog doesn't act liking a starving manic any more. She has a much better attention span and a stronger aim to please as well.
=)

If you're worried about feeling full.. A raw diet is pretty cool. Theres a high water content to the food and you feed a 'larger' amount volume wise. Raw meaty bones are awesome for dental health anyways. Also, if you get larger meaty bones.. it gives your dog something to gnaw on for a bit. I love turkey drumsticks as one can last my dog for a couple of hours. She'll eat on it.. get tired of it.. come back and eat some more. xD

Does anyone feed their dog Chappie? My dog is on Chappie at the moment, and she is a healthy agility dog. It's cheap with no artificial stuff. Is this good for dogs or not? apparently it's good for dogs with sensitive stomachs, which my dog has, because it is so bland.

Chappie looks terrible. Its full of grains and has BHA AND BHT which are both known to cause tumor/cancer in pets. Its also ful of unnamed meat sources so god knows whats actually in it.. Has LESS THAN 20% protein and LESS THAN 12% fat.. Its all fillers. x.x

Well I see nothing wrong with it. My dog has had a very bad past with all her illnesses and the vets said this is the best thing for her. She has had nothing wrong with her ever since she has been on it and is a healthy, happy dog. Maybe you were thinking of something different?

For the record, vets know next to nothing when it comes to pet nutrition. You'd have to find an actual nutritionist vet and/or a holistic vet to get solid nutritional information about dog food.

Chappie dog food, just like Science Diet, is another one of those dog foods that the dog food companies pay the vets to say good things about and to recommend to their patients.

This x 100. One of the reasons I love my new vet is, if you ask her about food, she'll give her personal opinion and make sure you know it's her opinion, and that she's not an expert on nutrition. The only foods her office stocks are a few hypoallergenic brands, but even then, she'll refer you to the "ridiculously expensive dog food store"(as I like to call it, lol,) to talk to the shop owner, who is a breeder and has certifications in something nutritionally related. I mean, yeah, I assume a vet has to know something about nutrition, but when your practice sees more than just one specific type of animal, it can get kinda hard to keep everything straight.

Dog's doing well on his new food. I did what mixing I could on the TOTW vs new food, and tried to pad out his kibble diet with other foods he's used to, to keep his tummy from freaking too much about the change. So far, so good, no soft poopies, and he's not stinking. Definitely have decided I'm not going back to TOTW, This may be my first experience with a recall from them, but it seems like it's not the first time Diamond has had to recall food for this type of issue. My mum's been feeding Performatrin(a different variety) for about 10 years now, and has never experienced a recall. Looks like a fair few people are getting sick because of this, too, makes me so much happier that the recall happened before I opened the new bag of food.

Sticking with a grain free diet for him, because it really does help with his runny eyes. Think I'm sticking with the Performatrin for now, even though I can't find any information on any analysis sites. Lots for Performatrin in general, but not for the Performatrin Ultra Grain Free Formula. If this doesn't work, I might give Orijen a try, but I'm worried I'll have the same problem with it as I did with Acana(apparently close to the same formula). Still looking for more suggestions as to what to look into as far as food goes.

Glad to know your pup is doing well on his new food Habit :3

I really wish there was a vet in my area that supported a raw diet or, even better, a holistic vet. I'm tired of trying to explain why I feed my dog raw meat >.>

I had a scare a couple days ago. Okami almost had a bowel obstruction. My vet tried to claim it must have been all the raw bone that she eats with her diet. Turns out it was actually a crap load of cat litter that she got into several days ago (my stupid sister let Okami into an area she's not supposed to be in when I wasn't home). Luckily, she seems to be doing ok now and seems to be taking food better now. I'm just so thankful she didn't need surgery!

Anyway, I think it's time to change to yet another vet. I'm tired of the one I'm going to always trying to tell me how terrible Okami's raw diet is (and then charging me a ridiculous amount of money) -_-

I found this website that has a list of debatably good dog foods. If you click on the brand, it will take you to a page that tells you the ingredients, highlighting the controversial ones, and giving the amount of carbs, protein, and fat in it. It also gives explainations to the top ingredients. It seems pretty credible :)

Anyone have any idea if authority is a good dog food? I got some the other day and my dogs seem to like it, and I can't remember the exact ingredients, but I know there's no by-products.

Pshh. I've fed my pup Blue Buffalo and Blue Buffalo Wilderness since the day I got her! : -) I feel all like a good owner now.

...okay, maybe she doesn't like it as much as the Purina junk my mom got her for the week I was away last year. But hey, I'd rather have a bag of potato chips than a handful of carrots. Eat chur veggies, Katniss.

{Katniss is my dog, by the way. I named her Katniss in 2010, so no "You RENAMED your dog just for the MOVIE!?" like my friends. You see, half of them don't realize that The Hunger Games actually came out a while ago.}

So, I'm getting a new puppy (so excited!) but I'm not sure if her immune system is polarly different than my other dog's. She's a Chihuahua mix, and not expected to reach over five pounds. Our other dog is a fifty pound GSD mix. My questions:

Her foster mom is feeding her Pedigree. Is that a good brand? Should we continue with that, or switch her to Iams like my other dog? (Don't worry, Scout gets so much human food that it balances out for the crappy brand.) We're not exactly rich (I paid for the puppy's adoption fee), and I honestly find it a waste of money to spend it on expensive food, so please don't suggest a "better brand." I don't want to sound rude, but what money we have I would rather have go to vet bills rather than expensive food.

Science Diet is fine. Our dogs are perfectly healthy on it.
But my younger dog is always trying to get food. x3
