    @mintu1

    I normally don't like pugs, but Chibi is super cute !!!
    So happy someone takes good care of their pug !!

    Have you thought of getting surgery to open up his airways a bit ;o ??
    He seems active ! But it would help even more probably !

Brachycephalic doesn't mean the dog can't exercise and be fit just as much as any other breeds.

@tea!

Thats super flattering to hear, thank you!

As for your queston, yes I have thought about it and it is not something I will do. Her airways are already good so I dont see a reason to put her through a riskful surgery. I train agility with her on a weekly basis and she isn't bothered at all. She has never shown any symptoms of brachycephalic syndrome. Obviously if her airways weren't good and she was showing symptoms I'd take the risk and let her have the surgery. A dogs well being always comes first. c:

Naeco wrote:Anyone ever try bikejoring with their dog/s? And not like run alongside the bike, actually pulling. Skai absolutely loves it. I tried it before the snow and she is amazing besides the fact that when she sees dogs she needs to say hi. Any tips for that?

I would be on the bike, by myself, so I cannot correct her or treat her. I always have a line hooked to her collar so I was thinking maybe verbal correction then prong correction? It worked when I trained her to walk properly.

first of...bikjoring is not simply pulling....you have to do most of the work, the dog will only help
--> how old is the dog? and is he cleared healthy enough by your vet for this :?:

then, never ever use a collar (and never ever a prong :shock: ....it is not right...or do you want to kill the dog?) but the right bikjoring-skijoring harness and leash and bikeattachment.with Flex part in leash
..
also...you Need to Train dog from the ground till they walk-stop-turn on your given comand without stop...asap.
no ever saying hi to other Dogs People or to pee, only when you say so!!!!! and you Need to let the dog stop now and then, to go potty or take a breath for some mins...the health of the dog goes over everything..

Train first Walking at you side till they turn left when you say left or right when you say right...or whistle or so...then let the dog walk in front of you and Train again, go over to running Walking ...when this works let them walk at you bike, next to you then in front of you and the bike and go over to driving the bike from slow to working travel trotting...they trot not go full run...the dog and you need to find the right a working gait on the bike for long runs you do in bikjoring, not the short fast run some do with there dog on the leash running full Speed...you can an most often will hurt the dog or work it in the ground...
so go slow, train up to the point you want to go...so no 30min run a first day, when dog is not fit and trained, start with 5min...
with slow every day training but one day where they have free day, each week...you will get the dog to work well and not pull to the side or stop...they sometimes will react bether than you with time,.....it can kill you and your dog or hurt you badly when you do something wrong....

i can look if i find the site with easy training and what harness and shockabsorbing long pulling leash to use....and such

I do have a harness. She knows her commands. I have a "separate" line attached to the collar, as in, no tension on the collar at all. It is there for now as a safety net, mainly due to other people and their dogs. She knows gee, haw, on by, lets go, easy, and stop. She listens perfectly on walks. It only happens when she actually runs. And for this, she actually does the pulling as I cannot peddle the bike I have begun her training on. She is vet cleared and is 18 months. I am going slow.

I may have worded this wrong. But she knows all the commands already. She walks well next to me. And I have started training the right way. She knows her leave it command when running. Her only huge trigger is dogs when running only. Other than that, a simple "on by" works.

I was thinking of using the prong on the separate line as a correct. No different than an e-collar except this one is on a line. I do not and cannot afford an e-collar.

      @naeco i've never tried it! though i've always thought that it looks fun, so maybe one day.

      are you mainly using a harness made for joring & have a different line attached to a collar as well or? if you don't have one, i'd recommend it. it's safer not to use a collar for any type of joring, because they're pulling your entire weight + a bike, which will put strain on their neck, and they'll quickly injure themselves. a harness made for it allows her to use her entire body weight for pulling, instead of her neck, and she'll be more comfy + safe.
      you can find lots online! like this or this

      it's definitely best to leave out the prong while you're on a bike, because accidents can happen, and obviously it's good to try and keep as safe as possible. the only tip i really have would be strengthening/working on leave it.

      @lmarani i'm really sorry. :c

I do have the separate line in place. I do not have an X back, terribly want one, but have one very similar to the second one you linked.

And it is terribly fun. We both love it. The first time, she went super fast until I was able to get her to realize that is isn't speed that counts. :D After that, I was easily able to control her gait with an "easy" until I was happy with her speed.

It does in situations when it is to the extreme that the dog struggles to get enough oxygen. Not all brachy dogs have that issue, hence the "some", but certainly it is an issue that is associated with them.

Carol Beuchat PhD wrote:...Internally, the tissues that normally occupy the muzzle are compressed into much less space at the front of the skull. This compresses the complex network of nasal turbinates and the tissues of the upper airway. The anatomical rearrangement of the skull also increases the risk of Chiri-like malformation and syringomyelia, impairs thermoregulation, and even alters the structural organization of the brain (Knowler et al 2014; Packer et al 2015; Roberts et al 2010). The consequences to the dog can be significant pain, exercise intolerance, laryngeal collapse, difficulty breathing, snoring, heat stroke, and even death...

Again, this isn't an issue for all brachycephalic dogs, but it can cause exercise intolerance, which by definition means they can't exercise as much.

Mintu1's suggestion is a good option though, and I'm sure there are lots of other low exertion exercises too, but in the end it will still take more time/effort on the owners part. Which of course still isn't an excuse, because if you get a brachy dog you should be at least willing to tackle those types of issues should they arise. Sadly many owners just don't seem to care, so it's always refreshing to see breeders/owners making serious efforts to improve the lives of their breed. Although, I wouldn't be suprised if only breeding dogs with good airways resulted in slightly longer snouts than is currently desired in the show ring/breed standard (at least for pugs and other brachy dogs with very flat faces)

Chibi is super cute too, I wish I could dress Olive up but her fur is seriously dense, it just wouln't be fair to her to add another layer.

    hey there
    I think this is a stupid question..
    but do dogs feel jealousy? and do they feel upset when they don't get the attention they desire?
    I was thinking about that if my parents ever do let us get another dog, will my current dog feel jealous over all the fuss of the new puppy?
    I start thinking about all these scenarios in my head where I see in my dog's point of view and that she is sad the new dog is getting all of her attention?
    yes, I would love to get another dog but my current doge, Lexi, will always be first. I just can't help but feel what she will (possibly)
    go through at the point it makes me feel rather upset? I hate the idea of my first and forever favourite dog feeling so upset, especially after today I could see the sadness in her eyes when my mom was looking at pictures of other dogs. I actually got out of my chair and gave Lexi a huge hug which she actually let me hug her and I whispered to her I'll always love her more than any other dog in the world.
    im not sure if it's just me or is here really sadness in her eyes because even when my sisters say 'omigod that dog is so cute!" if they see a dog on the television and Lexi just looks at the ground so I go and comfort her.
    I just feel really bad but I just want the best for my dog.
