I know theres some deterents that make it unpleasant for them to scratch. We're actually looking for something that can deter them whether it be a sticky type of thing or a smell they don't like.
Anyone got any solutions they have scratching posts and a cat tree but the couch problem is that we can't get a new couch which we kind of need unless we can find a solution that gets them to at least do it less frequently.
Note we aren't going to use a spray bottle of water that doesn't work with our cats, and I'd rather not make my youngest cat whose an incredibly nervous cat to begin with have more to be nervous about.
We obviously don't like that they scratch but we also understand they are cats so it's going to happen but like I said before it would be ideal if it was less frequent.
try moving around any scratching posts you may have next to or near the couch. this may bring the cats to scratch at the posts rater than the furniture. if that doesn't work then you could apply double sided tape to the areas of the furniture that they're scratching at. cats hate the feeling of tape and i've found it to be a great deterrent for my pesky cat. there are devices that puff out air or water when they detect movement, placing those near the couch will deter them from scratching as well. finally there are scents that cats don't like like lemons, limes, or orange, so getting a spray that is citrusy in smell and spraying it around the areas they scratch at will also deter the cats.

Edit: Anyone have any suggestions or things they've done to deter scratching on furniture it's always in the same spots on the couch and chair.
I take it that they do not like getting a manicure?

Can't say any of my cats have done that to me, but yeah I'd get kinda creeped out if they did.

I think if you have the means and experience to properly care for one, I don't see why people shouldn't be allowed to keep them. They make good companions if raised well and given enough physical activity and mental stimulation. They are most definitely not like normal house cats though, and need to be treated as such, with respect for their lineage and their capabilities to be dangerous.

was just wondering really about the ethics of keeping one - not one torn from the wild,
but raised by ethical breeders. i've been obsessed with servals for about 8 years, give or
take and have worked out by getting one ethically and young enough to form a solid
relationship, and to live with one for 20 years, i'd be £10,000 out of pocket. that is
including microchips, vaccinations, appropriate housing, etc. raw food will probably
be very expensive, especially if going the free-range/organic route.
i don't suppose anyone owns/has owned servals in the past?
